Most of the time I'd agree with you, except Mercer I'd already say is much better than your description and is over .5ppg player at his young age while Nemec is undoubtedly better than a bottom pairing dman already but NJ is simply taking their time with him as they have no reason to rush his development by which most reports indicate is going just fine. If in fact there's any credibility to this whatsoever, which seems unlikely, it would need some serious consideration by our management. It has the potential to be a franchise altering trade.

I like the Boeser for Joker potential deal for us a lot. Even at 23yo I think Jokiharju has a lot more to give if he's put into the right situations - as such, I wouldn't be pairing him with Huggy as he'd likely need to revert to a pure defensive style whereas I think he could be a 40pt dman if he was paired with another 'Schenn' style player (not that we have many of those kicking around the organization). Watching him numerous times with Portland, he was dominant at times and never developed to his full potential imo as he was rushed into pro hockey pretty quickly.

[Proposal] Not Done With the Isles Yet
Fanuck replied to HKSR's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Not that I wouldn't want to get out from under this looming Miller deal but, BoHo gets a fresh start and gets stuck with Miller for 7 more years - I'm sure he'd appreciate that. Miller's essentially the reason BoHo has to uproot his entire family and start over. https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/canucks-culture-problem-drama-leaders https://www.mapleleafsinsider.com/Canucks-forward-has-reportedly-created-a-rift-in-locker-room-labeled-as-a-bit-of-a-prck-194563 https://www.hockeypatrol.com/Insider-Reveals-JT-Miller-Reputation-in-the-Vancouver-Locker-Room-and-it-Not-Good-194569 -

League wide cap issue solutions
Fanuck replied to Mustard Tiger's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Wouldn't this simply circumvent the entire reason for the cap - which is to create a financially equal playing field for all teams? What kind of NHL player wants to be traded to one of the teams with unlimited budgets and told - you're in the pressbox until we hit PO because your salary puts over the $80mil limit? I'm not sure the NHLPA would even like that idea? -
Is Elias Pettersson Happy In Vancouver? | 32 Thoughts (Sportsnet)
Fanuck replied to Canuck You's topic in Canucks Talk
Could very well be. They've been guilty of grossly misjudging several things in the past (their ability to get BoHo signed, their ability to re-structure the defence, how close this franchise was to being a regular PO team, the depth of moves necessary to redirect this franchise ie. small changes vs. MAJOR surgery, ect....). Wouldn't surprise me completely if they miscalculated and this whole thing blows up in their faces - but I would hope they're more competent than that, you just never know with this group? -

Fanuck replied to Canuck You's topic in Canucks Talk
I'm not in the habit of giving this management group much credit - but one has to think that they wouldn't knowingly create a power-struggle in the locker room by choosing a head coach that they knew would butt heads with their newly extended 'emotional leader'. This franchise is already under a lot of pressure and their own management group under the microscope recently - one would think they wouldn't deliberately create additional issues for themselves or the players/coaches. JR has a history with Tocchet - he knows his style well, by now he should have 'some' idea of how Miller conducts himself both on/off the ice - why would JR put gas on a fire under his own roof? -
[Signing] Islanders re-sign Bo Horvat
Fanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
While completely true, it's not just us - my friend's a Pen's fan (not sure why) and he still goes on about the Naslund deal. -
He's an interesting prospect - I've seen him ranked as high as #12 overall through to middle of the second round. Seems a bit risky when there's no consensus (or even a ballpark general agreement) of where he should be ranked. At this stage of our organization's development, I'm not sure we can afford to be making 'risky' picks. Then again, if he developed into a top 2 d-man........

[Proposal] Canucks - Flames deadline deal
Fanuck replied to Odjick the Warrior's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I'd gladly go a 'quid-pro-quo' hockey deal with virtually any team in the division, except these guys. -
[Proposal] Van - Pitt Including Miller
Fanuck replied to Highstickin's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
They will/would try to spin doctor any move that they are 're-evaluating', but in the big picture a move like trading Miller before his extension even starts is tantamount to admitting you were grossly negligent in your initial evaluation of the organization in my view. Now, if in fact they come out and say they signed Miller because ownership wanted them to, and now ownership has changed the expectations of the franchise - that's a different story, but then again, this ownership has always used management to take the blame for everything and I don't expect for one second FA is going to own up to anything so I'm not holding my breath on that one. -
[Rumour] Canucks Getting Calls on Luke Schenn
Fanuck replied to Warhippy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Agreed this deal makes no sense. That said, I do expect Dubass to do something significant at/before TDL - there's a lot of speculation (for whatever it's worth) that if this particular iteration of the club doesn't make a long run this spring, that his job is on the line and Shanaplan will alter course and/or find someone who will. Say what you want about our own era of mediocrity, but TO has not made it past the 1st round of the playoffs in nearly two decades. -
[Proposal] Van - Pitt Including Miller
Fanuck replied to Highstickin's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Details of this deal notwithstanding - I can't see it happening simply for the optics. You sign what you call your 'team leader' to a career contract and he's supposed to be one of the centrepieces of the team moving forward, then you do an abrupt about face and subsequently deal him before that deal even starts - JR and Allvin might as well hold a press conference telling everyone they're incompetent and incapable of doing their jobs, that they're unable to accurately evaluate at an organizational level, and they made the wrong move and are willing to literally pay for it for the next seven years. -
I don't think we have to worry about 'not tanking', but rather several other teams are tanking way better than us and had massive head starts on us to boot unfortunately!

Rumor: Rutherford Believed To Want Out Of Vancouver
Fanuck replied to fivethej's topic in Canucks Talk
Maybe one day, but without a single day of managerial experience whatsoever? I guess one could easily argue it certainly couldn't get any worse, could it? -
Rumor: Rutherford Believed To Want Out Of Vancouver
Fanuck replied to fivethej's topic in Canucks Talk
I'm sure if there were anything to this conjecture JR would've already said so, he can't keep his mouth shut on any matter. That, or he did say it but he's intending on doing the exact opposite of quitting since he's shown he likes to say one thing and do the total opposite. -
[Signing] Islanders re-sign Bo Horvat
Fanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I understand that and I've heard that rational before, but as a father myself, I would never sell out my family and force them to live in a cess pool like NY for what in the end is a negligible amount of money when your career is done. And yes, I've spent considerable time in NY and presently live on the other side of the country from half my own family. -
[Signing] Islanders re-sign Bo Horvat
Fanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
If someone told me I could earn 100million in my career but live half of it in a cess pool like NY or earn 90million and live my life and raise a family in Canada/Vancouver, well......it seems like there's something we're not aware of here? We're the thoughts of playing the next 7-8 years with Miller too much for BoHo or......? -
[Signing] Islanders re-sign Bo Horvat
Fanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Exactly, it's one thing to play on a 'meh' team but live in one of the best cities in NA, it's another to play on a 'meh' team and live in a cess pool like NY. -
[Signing] Islanders re-sign Bo Horvat
Fanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
But he has to raise his family in NY, you can't tell me the money didn't trump everything else now that the details are out. Now that some time has passed and this is known, it was absolutely the best move to trade Bo. When he's two or three years removed from his career year and playing like a 5.5-6m dollar player, there'll be no regrets I'm sure from either side. And yes, the same could probably be said about Miller regressing to a lower standard of regular play as we've sadly already seen. -
TDL - College - Draft - (proposal/ Discussion))
Fanuck replied to KKnight's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I hear you, but this sounds exactly like the plan that made us into one of the highest scoring, yet perennially lotto- pick teams in the league, no? We absolutely must prioritize needs at some point and this organization's prospect pool is completely devoid of skilled defenceman and two-way centerman. I'm not saying to pick a 20th ranked dman in the top 5, but if it's even close, imo you pass on the average sized European middle six nondescript winger and take the mobile defenceman with size for sure. -
TDL - College - Draft - (proposal/ Discussion))
Fanuck replied to KKnight's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I was right with you until we got two top 10 picks and didn't take a defenceman. Then I was out the door when you traded the 2nds and still didn't select a defenceman again! I get that your plan is to acquire one, but we all know how that worked out for us in the past. -
This shouldn't be a surprise nor should it cause trade speculation. With JR's comments during the Tocchet presser (essentially confirming guys will be called up) combined with losing a roster player via waivers, and Mik's season ending surgery - these call-ups should've been expected. This does allow us to see 2 things however: 1. How does Allvin follow up his earlier comments that in his view the previous coaching staff was only utilizing half the roster. 2. What exactly can Tocchet bring to the organization in terms of 'prospect development' since that's a vital part of this team moving forward, and an aspect this club has lacked for some time.

What's The Deal On Demko? (Discussion)
Fanuck replied to Nuxfanabroad's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Agreed, an average goalie is pretty easy to trade for and/or sign. Even a better than average goalie isn't impossible to find on the open market. But it's almost impossible to acquire a 'truly elite' goalie in their prime signed long-term on a very reasonable deal and that is , presumably, what Demko is or what most of CDC believes he is. If you're an NHL GM and you have a team with all the pieces except a truly elite goalie (LA for example) - I think it's totally reasonable to consider a trade for a young RHD. I'm not saying it happens at TDL, but Demko could take a team like LA to the next level and they have arguably one of the strongest young defence pools in the league - they could easily afford to trade one as they don't have room on the roster for all of them once they develop beyond the minor-league level. Copley isn't the answer there, everyone knows that.
