  1. Question......If we make the playoffs & NJD get the pick, what is the highest/lowest the pick could Be?
  2. Directly from the government website on K-12 education put out May 19th: So no, while it doesn't expressly say kids can't transmit the virus, it essentially says the same thing 'wordsmithed' to absolve them of any responsibility should that eventuality occur - what else would you expect from government, right? By sending staff/students back to school beginning Monday, they are taking a 'calculated risk' with the safety of the citizens of this province - given the context in which we live right now, I don't know how anyone could argue otherwise?
  3. If what some people here are claiming is actually true - that Judd single handedly turned around this organization through his drafting choices (and I'm not saying it is or isn't ture) - then he won't need to be looking for another job, GM's will be lining up to hire and promote him.
  4. I'm actually surprised the rate of transmission has been that low in QC considering the exposure levels since they've returned to work/school and what we are learning about how the virus transmits through children. I'm curious as to the level of testing they're doing and if/when these 22 confirmed cases results in another escalation in that province?
  5. Not even close Jimmy. You know as well as I do that there's a certain element on CDC (not saying you or I), that will continue to dredge up every single pick that Judd's next organization makes (and he will be hired by another organization undoubtedly) and compare them with ours - for better or worse. This story ain't over, just one chapter - I think we know CDC too well to believe that.
  6. It's not just TO, I've seen it here in BC. Many people seem to think because we've successfully flattened the curve and are doing way better than many other places across the country, that we're over this thing. Frightens me because we're just days away from sending hundreds of thousands of students back to school.
  7. As long as your daughter has her birthday party at school she can have as many friends as she wants and it's perfectly safe.
  8. Exactly kos. I brought up the conflicting messaging coming from leadership several pages ago but it has to be revisited because it's just too ludicrous: Wear a mask, but not at school - it's safe. No large gatherings, but it's ok at school since it's safe. Kids can't transmit the virus and/or aren't really effected by it - but hold on a second, we're still gathering research on this. Keep your bubble small - but not at school, it's safe. Social distance at all times, but not at school, it's safe. I don't think there's a face-palm emoji large enough to cover the mixed-messaging coming down from the highest provincial level right now.
  9. You make a lot of good points higgy. I agree with pretty much everything you've mentioned. It still concerns me GREATLY that Henry/Horgan have taken the point of view that it's in the best interests of the province to send children back to school. I understand all of the protocols/measures they're taking and I STILL have great concerns. I don't think many people would have caused much fuss whatsoever if they had shut down schools until Sept at the earliest. I mean in the big picture - it's 4 weeks more of the same and realistically, the K-5 kids are only attending 2x per week in June and the older kids even less so one has to ask the question - is the risk worth the reward in sending kids back to be babysat for 8 days total in June?
  10. For now, I'm taking this as simple PR - tell the general public what they want to hear and try not to panic parents/teachers/students. I mean seriously, what else would a superintendent of the largest school district in the province say publicly? I want to hear from people in actual schools once kids go back whether strict protocols/measures are not only in place, but are actually being rigorously enforced?
  11. I was thinking this, but didn't want to mention it for fear of, well, 'jinx'. But yeah, I wouldn't want our first to have an * beside it and I would be worried it would. But at the same time, I'm not gonna lie, I'll watch every one of our games just like I would've if there were no COVID.
  12. Tell me realistically, what power exactly do you think the BCTF holds in a 'declared state of emergency' when they are lobbying against the side who makes and changes the rules? I get you stawns, I do, and I can see that you and all other teacher's out there who aren't confident in a return to work would feel the same. You know from this thread my position from the beginning has been to shut down school until Sept at the very earliest. But there's no basis that I know of to blame the BCTF for the Government's decision to re-open schools June1st. The BCTF has little to no power against the provincial government under normal situations - let alone under a provincial state of emergency. As I said, the decision to return children (and teachers) back to school June 1st, for better or worse, is all on Dr. Henry.
  13. As a hockey fan I'm happy they're at least trying to figure out a plan. As a traditionalist, this year's season and eventual cup winner is going to have a giant * beside it unfortunately.
  14. kos, I 100% agree with you on this. I have said from the beginning and still believe school should have continued through distance learning (or whatever they're calling it now) until the end of June then all of the parties (government/health ministry/education ministry/BCTF/parent groups/CUPE/ect...) could've gotten together over the summer to formulate a solid (or at least a more informed) return to school plan for Sept. People think the BCTF has some say in school returning or not returning June 1st - they DON'T - this is 100% the decision of Dr Henry who then advises Horgan who subsequently directs the ministry of education. I understand the BCTF lobbied hard against the return to school June 1st decision by Dr. Henry, but that's all they can do, is lobby - for all the amazing things she's done thus far since the pandemic outbreak, right or wrong, this return to school June 1st is completely on her now.
  15. Definitely appreciated for sure. When I was at Costco on the weekend, I saw hand sanitizer at the entrance/exit and literally on the end of many of the aisles inside the store. They were also giving out free masks to anyone who wanted one. Furthermore, they had a team of about 4 employees who's only job seemed to be to disinfect all the carts/trolley's. It did make it seem like their management was at least trying.
  16. I really want to agree with you on this deb, but part of me believes the stores taking 'measures' are doing it for their own bottom line knowing full well that an outbreak linked to their store/franchise could financially ruin them. A good friend of mine who is a commercial insurance broker confirmed my doubts when he told me that some of the larger insurers in the states are telling clients to get their measures in place if they want to continue to be covered by their insurance policies.
  17. My friends wife tells me that initially the government wasn't going to allow teachers to wear their own (or anyone else's) PPE because of the potential negative effect it could have on the mental state of some students and the public perception of the safety of schools opening - Union pressure got them to change that stance. Now they're allowed to wear it and cannot be discriminated against for doing so. Some people need to be reminded (not saying you kos) that in a time of unprecedented attacks (education has been under attack in this province for two decades) that not ceding ground and/or losing rights is like a victory in itself, nevermind making forward progress.
  18. So this things goes ahead, we get down to the semi-finals with 4 teams left, a couple guys test positive from one team - then what? Tell the Lightning they can proceed to play but without Point, Kuch, Hedman and Vasilevskiy........ok then. Or the semi finals for eastern conference plays in Vegas, and the west plays in Vancouver. But one location has an outbreak and the teams stationed there test positive in enough numbers that they're decimated, then what? I really like to know what the NHL contingency plans are gonna be to not make a mockery out of an already comical situation. I know there's a lot of 'what if's', and both the NHL/PA are working on all eventualities, but I just can't wrap my head around all of the considerations.....
  19. Beagle plays if/when this thing goes off. You don't leave the guy with the most playoff experience on the team, and one of only a few on the roster who has won a cup, in the pressbox imo. The type of experience that Beagle has in the playoffs is one of the main reasons JB brought him here.
  20. Yet BC's chief provincial health officer, premier, and minister of education believe it's PERFECTLY safe to send hundreds of thousands of kids to school in large gatherings and will not provide PPE to either staff or students. Seems legit! The conflicting messages we are hearing are actually so concerning it's comical: Wear a mask - but not at school, you're safe. Wash your hands often - but not at school because there's no infrastructure in place at most schools that can support 200 kids/adults trying to do that all day. Keep personal bubbles to as few people as possible - but send your kids to school, it's safe. Social distance, but not at school, it's safe. All sporting events, religious gatherings, conferences, or similar events are cancelled - but not school, it's safe.
  21. No guarantees, I think we can all understand that, but we can be hopeful: https://globalnews.ca/news/6972698/coronavirus-britain-vaccine-trials/ https://www.livescience.com/coronavirus-vaccine-oxford-available-fall.html
  22. I know people will point out that BC has a different 'curve' than many places, and we seem to have done a better job overall at 'flattening', but to me there are far more risks than rewards to opening up schools in June. From the article linked below: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/05/health/coronavirus-children-transmission-school.html
  23. Like I mentioned earlier - admin are just pawns in this, directives are coming from way higher up the chain - and these directives are being sent without due diligence in that there are questions about the directives which haven't been logically thought through. Has the minister of ed or his deputy and/or the CMO or anyone on her staff gone to an actual school and try to see what measures would be needed vs. what resources are available - I don't think they've even thought it all the way through - they just kick down their directive and tell people to figure out the details.
  24. So, knowing that the children WILL have contact with each other, what is the consequence (besides constant reminders and redirection) when they do? Reminders, time-outs, loss of privileges, in-school suspension, at-home suspension.....this is the normal chain of consequences, no? Any leader that gives you a plan - and knows FULL well the plan cannot be followed - is borderline incompetent and is putting you in harm's way imo.
  25. Follow the chain of command and you will see who/where the letdown occurred: Teacher>administrator>superintendent>trustees>bcpsea>ministry of education>chief provincial medical officer>premier Somewhere in there is the person responsible for sending you back to work and sending kids back to school without a solid plan.
