  2. Let me guess, they are indicating that the site administrator - who is NOT an infectious disease expert - will ultimately decide all the protocols that the school will put in place?
  3. With something like this (pandemic), administrators do not have the authority to 'figure out' anything - they wait from direction from their Superindendent, who waits for direction from their board of trustees, who wait for direction from BCPSEA, who waits for direction from the Ministry of Education, who waits on direction from the Chief Medical Officer, who decides.....amiright stawns? Now, if/when CMO decides that schools can re-open, they might in fact kick down some decision-making to site admin, but that didn't happen until last wed so there really has been very, very little time to decide how to send almost 750 000 students back to school in BC.
  4. Why is is possible for ON to keep kids safe, schools closed, and still begin to re-open the economy at the same time yet our province doesn't think the two are both possible? https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-ontario-to-keep-all-schools-closed-through-the-end-of-june/?utm_medium=Referrer:+Social+Network+/+Media&utm_campaign=Shared+Web+Article+Links
  5. There's a valid argument that you don't need schools open to jumpstart the economy because kids aren't in school all summer and the economy runs just fine. Furthermore, there's every reason to believe that pre-schools/daycares opening up (yes, I realize they were never 'forced' to close, but so many of them did anyway that it has a huge impact), is in fact more important to the economy than schools but they won't force them to do anything because they can't control them - they sure can control teachers though......
  6. I tend to agree kofs, they were doing really, really well with this unprecedented situation. It now looks like they're just caving into pressure from the business community and risking other sectors (education) as a result. Agreed. They basically have told teachers (from what my friends wife tells me who teaches in the lower mainland) to kill time for 5 weeks. Just when classroom teachers had gotten into a groove with this whole distance learning concept they change game and tell them to teach both kids who show up and kids who stay home. If they'd just closed schools until summer it would have given everyone (government, educators, scientists, medical doctors) time to formulate a plan for Sept. It looks like a pressured decision to appease the business community - but what does the business community do all summer when kids aren't in school anyway - it finds a way, no? 100% agree BPA. Providing PPE should be required by the employer and WorkSafe BC should be enforcing this. I mostly agree Jimmy, but the past week or so, ever since the re-opening announcement last Wed and the announcement that schools are re-opening, has me wondering if they're succumbing to the 'peer pressure' that is most definitely amping up, and we all know that the best decisions are never made under duress. The schools re-opening issue is of particular concern as it's our most precious resource they're taking chances with - children. This (and far worse, is exactly what I'm worried about): https://www.businessinsider.com/70-new-coronavirus-cases-reported-after-french-schools-begin-reopening-2020-5 I'm not comfortable with them using our children for the next 5 weeks as 'guinea pigs' - sorry, I'm not down with that one bit.
  7. https://www.bbc.com/news/health-52648557 https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/14/health/pediatric-coronavirus-syndrome-multisystem-health/index.html https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/27/nhs-warns-of-rise-in-children-with-new-illness-that-may-be-linked-to-coronavirus https://theintercept.com/2020/05/01/coronavirus-children-undercount/ I don't know about you, but I'm not comfortable accepting the risk of exposing the children of our province to this related disease. It is unacceptable imo. Schools have been shut down all summer for what, the past 50+ years? And our country's economy has been just fine. I'm not completely buying the 'schools need to be open for the economy to be open' because what does our economy do all summer when the schools aren't open anyway - it doesn't shut down.
  8. Realistically, referring to schools specifically, it's not 3 months, it's one because once you get to July there's no expectation for kids to be in school anyway in July/Aug and the current pressure that would be on government is basically on hold all summer - it would buy government (and society) time to gather more evidence and make more informed decisions. Then it gives all parties (leadership, policy-makers, health officials, researchers, schools, ect....) two full months (which is a quite a bit of time the way things are changing so fast with this pandemic) to sort out what the plan would be in Sept. There's way more risk than reward opening schools right now imo given that they could just hold the line with distance learning for another month and then most of the pressure would be off with regards to attending school b/c of summer holidays. The 'trial' run explanation for Sept bs really angers me because what they're really saying is we're gambling with the most precious things in most peoples lives - children.
  9. Sorry, just can't get behind the idea of getting older, slower, more expensive, and not to mention we'd be giving up an asset with untapped potential who will be here, if we're lucky, throughout our competitive years with this core for a guy who definitely won't be here when our new core is truly at it's best.
  10. I never said they closed daycares/preschools, but it's common knowledge out there that thousands across the province voluntarily did close - including my own for my child. And they've given us zero indication (despite several of the families asking very kindly) that they're re-opening anytime soon. Then you start talking with your circle of parents/friends and learn there are many, many people out there in the same situation - their employer gearing up for work (not mine, I've worked through the whole pandemic), they're expected to return, but they have no child care in place. I'm lucky because my employer is very understanding and compassionate, so they allow me to work from home but not everyone is so lucky. Now I'm in an odd situation b/c a friend of mine asked me if I could temporarily look after their child because if they both don't return to work their literally risking losing their jobs and our children were in the same child care facility - and yes, one of them is a teacher so I know exactly what they're going through.
  11. You mean like how our leader Horgan and his chief medical officer planned with the minister of education to re-open schools but not preschools/daycares - meaning every single teacher/administrator/EA/secretary//custodian,ect... out there with kids of their own younger than school aged is absolutely effed. You mean doing research like that.....? edit, sorry, that's not research - it would probably just fall into the 'common effing sense' category wouldn't it?
  12. And they were supposed to be touring Canada to bring something positive to communities across the nation......very unfortunate sadly. Luckily the outcome wasn't worse, based on op's post, but we'll see what really happened shortly I'm guessing.
  13. Isn't there no actual 'salary' in the playoffs either - just a bonus based on how far the team advances?
  14. You had to live through this era of hockey to appreciate this, but if you did - I think you'll understand why this is easily the funniest thing in sports:
  15. Not everyone is going to be a Canuck For Life (except Steamer it seems). EVERYONE will eventually move on whether it be ownership, players, coaches, management or yes, scouts. If Judd moves on then I hope he does well. The Canucks, for their short history and modest franchise successes we've had over the years, actually have a very good track record of recruiting, employing, and graduating many sought-after hockey management personnel. We should be proud that some Canucks personnel are coveted by other organizations and/or have higher aspirations, and if they move on - it's the natural order of things in pro-sports imo.
  16. At Costco yesterday I saw an elderly lady trying to get a piece of large office furniture out of the back of her RAV4. There was absolutely no way she was going to be able to do that herself (I don't know who did it for her at her house or who actually thought she'd be able to return it by herself) so I asked her if she needed assistance and if she was ok with me unloading it for her and bringing it to the return counter - through her mask I could tell she was grateful, so I loaded it onto a trolley and brought it to the return counter and told them an older lady would be there shortly to do the return. Not a big deal really, as where I live I'm certain that someone would've helped her if I wasn't walking by.
  17. From this list, it sounds absurd, but I think I'd stick with LE. At least he's 'serviceable' and won't directly hurt the team on the ice or off: https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/1799729
  18. Last time I checked they only asked you how many pucks you stopped, not how you stopped them lol.....
  19. My issue with these types of media posts is that they are only showing one part of the picture so to speak no pun intended. They can distract the reader with whatever BS camera focal length talk they want, but that's not the real question imo. It's one thing to show a picture of thousands of people spread nicely apart on a beach - but how did they all get there? Did they all completely social distance at the intersection by the pool on Cornwall or Arbutus or Burrard or the Seawall for example? I HIGHLY doubt that people stood 2 meters apart (or whatever it is these days) at an intersection on a sidewalk while waiting to cross the street. So that brings up the question - if you're not completely social distancing while going to/from the beach, but you do when you get to the beach, were you really social distancing during your visit to the beach? It's like the 5 individuals I witnessed at Save-On foods last week having a gathering around the back of one of their pick-up trucks in the parking lot. In no way were they practicing SD, but they sure did when they entered the store and stood on the decals on the floor near the check-out counter (one behind me and another a couple people in front of me).....were they really practicing SD on their trip to the store that day.....?
  20. Let's get this mask some official game action!
  21. If the season is in fact done - does that make us a lottery team? If so, wouldn't it be better for us to keep our pick this year and defer the 1st to NJ to the following year when presumably we develop into a better team and pick at a lower position?
  22. Is it just me, where I live, or did the mere mention of 'easing the restrictions' by Horgan the other day get interpreted by most people as 'resume normal activities now'????
  23. Hughes would be carrying the majority of the defense's offense on probably 20 or more teams in the league - so I'm not sure that's a great example. Not saying we don't need to see some improvement in places though. Realistically, I see a CBO of someone (take your pick where it'll benefit most) and the hopeful re-signing of Tanev and Marky. Give Tofolli an opportunity to be part of something he previously experienced in LA, but he has to be reasonable on $/term or it simply won't work here - we are in no position to give him the kind of money like LE got when he signed as a UFA regardless of whether he could get it elsewhere or not. Other than that, we give Rafferty/OJ legitimate opportunities next season and go from there and see where we are with Train when things resume. I don't see 'scorched earth' approaches happening on this team anytime soon. Oh, and I wish people (not you) would stop trying to justify ways that trading Brock would be a great thing for this club. Unless JB receives an overpayment the likes of which he cannot refuse - keep the kid here.
  24. Boggles my mind that people want to trade Brock. If JB can get a deal he can't refuse (unlikely - as we're simply not that lucky) then ok, I get it. But otherwise.... CDC for years, "We desperately need a young, legit star who can score and who is a marketing dream." CDC now, "Let's trade this young, legit star because he's apparently dispensable now and we'll get something else to take his place." For the record, sign Tanev and Markstrom - Tofolli can move on if he's not reasonable on $/term. If Tofolli wants to be part of something special here he has to know he can't be asking for LE money from us sadly, there's just no possibility of that with what will inevitably happen to the cap moving forward.
