The only reason one would mention Gillis in a conversation about JB would be to reference the situation JB was inheriting when he came here. Unless you go the route of 'scorched earth' rebuild (which it has since come out as public knowledge that Aquaman did not authorize because he wanted his elderly father to have the possibility of seeing a cup win) it would take any GM several years to re-build what we had going on here when JB was hired. After 5 hundred-point seasons in 6 years and a cup final run, our system was gutted of high value prospects - this takes time to re-establish unless you tear it down - which as mentioned Aquaman said himself he did not want. JB took his time, did what he could to satisfy Aquaman that he was icing a decent team, all the while astutely making some pretty good picks along the way. As recently as a year ago, our prospect system was ranked by several different sources as top five in the entire league and presently, we are/were right in the mix for a playoff spot. I'd say given the circumstances of what he inherited and the constrictions of what ownership was putting on him, JB has done an admirable job.

[Report] Former Flames coach Bill Peters lands in KHL
Fanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
So JB's getting Train out of there before he gets the 'Flame-Taint', right......? -
Buyouts cost money, sure. But if you can buyout player 'X' in order to sign player 'Y', you've theoretically made your team better - then you've just increased your chances of making playoffs where you're going to presumably make that money back and then some. Spend money now (buyout) to make money in the future (playoffs), Aquaman of all people would know this business principal - it's a risk/reward business move and not guaranteed, but it's business after all, nothing is guaranteed.

Melnyk, Sens Wound Up Looking Like Geniuses
Fanuck replied to Nuxfanabroad's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Why exactly? What problems has their CBA solved for them that could apply to the NHL? Many have suggested the NFL CBA is superior because they can simply cut players at will but all that did is cause any worthwhile UFA's to demand 'guaranteed' money/huge signing bonuses in their deals which still pretty much count against the cap - although no other CBA in pro sports has as many loopholes I'll grant you that. NFL still has a cap. NFL GM's still have difficulty with their cap. NFL teams still lose players b/c they can't afford them. NFL GM'S still sign players to albatross contracts that they simply cannot terminate without great financial penalty. -
Notable Canuck Trades That Almost Happened (Discussion)
Fanuck replied to KKnight's topic in Canucks Talk
Stojanov eventually got us Naslund though. Now that's a really good question - would we have been better off with Gretzky for however many years we could sign him for (lots of rumors at that time that he never liked our franchise), or Naslund for the incredible decade he gave to our organization......? -

[discussion] My Symptoms, Lack Tests, and mis informationBC.
Fanuck replied to Lazurus's topic in Off-Topic General
Laz, I'm sorry you're going through this unfortunate experience - I can only imagine how difficult, frustrating & downright frightening it must be. You however seem to have done everything within your ability to address what you could. Sounds like you are on the mend though. Sadly, many have done exactly what you did and weren't as fortunate as you. If you had/have elderly relatives living with you I'm sure you've taken precautions for them b/c it seems like you've done pretty much everything right - that makes hearing your story even more frustrating. Best wishes. -
[Discussion] NJ/Van Severson for Virtanen
Fanuck replied to Provost's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
As crazy as this might sound, I'm not entirely convinced that I'd trade any one of those guys, let alone a package of them for Severson. With the cap going down next season players who can step in and contribute on ELC are going to be very, very valuable - hopefully that'll be Raffy & OJ. -
No it isn't Fred. You don't need to spread misinformation to try and make an argument, it's just a conversation here.

I used to watch All-star wrestling on tv with my grandfather as well. Was probably same age. He also made us a backyard skating rink - that's easily my first memory of anything sports related.

Financially, analysts are comparing the present situation more with the global recession of 08-09 than they are with any war. The only economic down-turn comparable for most analysts would be the great depression. As it happens, we made it out and came back much, much stronger than the recession of '08. Things are going to get worse before they get better, there's no doubt in my mind about that - nor is there doubt that eventually, society will make it through and be stronger in the long-run, as there will be mechanisms and experience in place if/when something like this ever happens again.

I read/watch what everyone else does, we all do. What I try not to do, and what I admittedly have probably been guilty of doing in the past, is read too much between the lines. That's when a simple, ordinary, run-of-the-mill contract offer/negotiation gets twisted and all of a sudden becomes speculation about a guy being on the 'outs' with an entire organization. Again, I ask, has anyone here heard factual information indicating Judd is not on good terms with anyone in the organization?
-
One of the many reasons why NHL implemented revenue sharing years ago. There will be markets/owners that are unaffected (or less affected anyway) and they will prop up the others if necessary like has been happening for many years. Don't forget there will be expansion money coming from Seattle and typically, when expansion happens, theres a bit of a spike in league revenue.
-
I hear/see a lot of supposition and pure conjecture about this, but I've yet to be presented with one piece of factual information indicating this. As far as I can tell theories about Judd being on the 'outs' are as valid as theories that JM doesn't want to be here because he's not signed a team-friendly long-term contract with no clauses yet. I'm not saying he's going or staying, just that there's no reason to believe he's on 'bad terms' with the franchise or anyone working in the franchise.

I'm talking about the team that was there when JB was directly responsible as assistant GM. They had a cup win and a finals loss within 3 years....and we all know it wasn't Chia-Pet masterminding that squad. Doesn't matter who was fired, winning coaches/GM's get fired all the time - it's business after all, right?

Didn't people say something similar about Lockwood.........?

Lol......he thinks they'll low-ball a contract and sign Marky to backup Craw...... that literally made me lol.
-
If he leaves you can assume it wasn't over money as Aquaman has said over and over, if he's to be believed, that JB has full authority to spend at his discretion to make the franchise a winner. You can also assume that we'll be fine as a franchise. People forget or refuse to acknowledge that Judd wasn't in Boston - that was JB building that monster over there and likey doing most of it himself behind the scenes as its subsequently been proven it wasn't Chia-pet.

[Discussion] Virtanen+ for DeAngelo(NYR)
Fanuck replied to 86Viking's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Hard Pass. DeAngelo has had serious character issues well documented since his Jr days. Negativity follows this guy wherever he goes. -
I don't believe that's accurate - the compliance buyouts in 2013-14 were because there was a work stoppage the previous season resulting in a HUGE decrease in league-wide hockey revenue meaning many teams were unable to ice even a minimal size roster and come in under the existing salary cap restrictions. Not unlike what will happen next season - this season will ultimately result in a HUGE hockey related-revenue decrease meaning the cap will either stay flat (unlikely scenario imo) or likely go down considerably meaning many teams will again, like in 2013-14, be hard-pressed to ice a minimal roster under the cap.
-
Is Jacob Markstrom going to be the starting goalie here next year? If so, what will be his term/salary/clauses? All other issues can, to some degree imo, be solved after this concern is resolved.

Connor Bedard granted exceptional status by WHL
Fanuck replied to Baer.'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
Kind of ironic this 'exceptional status' concept. I get that these kids have outgrown their peers, and that there's nothing left for them to prove/learn at that level. I also get that they'd inevitably be drafted by a terrible team anyway. But it's like, "Congratulations kid, you are an exceptionally gifted athlete and person, your reward is to immediately be placed on one of the worst teams in the entire country at the age of 15 and hope that organization can get it together, or not.....good luck with that son.....?"
