  1. Like I indicated, the PA could justifiably oppose any unilateral changes to the CBA and likey win easily - it is, as you say, a mutually agreed binding contract, but doing so would have some seriously negative consequences for their own members - not the least of which would be their most vulnerable, lower-compensated short-career members. The PA recognized there was an issue last time they agreed to contravene the CBA for the compliance buyouts, this current situation is no different imo - speaking strictly financially that is. I'm not saying the PA would be wrong in opposing any changes in the CBA, just that if they chose that option they'd be hurting many of their own members. There's a 'workaround' with precedence that they agreed to before, it has benefits for both sides.
  2. The PA could play hardball on this and dispute it in the court system for sure, but in the end they'd be saving a couple overpaid guys on every team at the expense (and maybe career) of probably 6-10 guys on every team who wouldn't get contract offers at all or who would get completely low-ball contracts because of the cap limitations of each team. That and the PA would know if they didn't agree the owners/GM's would probably start mass demotions to the AHL - at least if their members are bought out they can look for more reasonable contracts and stay in the NHL.
  3. You're describing something very typical, imo, of athletes who were born with natural physical gifts. Guys who could always rely on ability vs. hard work to dominate opponents and rise up through the ranks. Very, very rare is the player on the team with the most talent also the hardest worker night in night out every shift. Many coaches/gm's have said in the past the biggest obstacle for younger players is consistency and overall professional approach to the game. What excites me most is not where JV is now, but the distance he's put between where he is now and where he started with us.
  4. While I understand that many people believe this fallacy, they are not. People believe they are businesses because students pay them to receive a service but the vast majority of universities survive on government subsidies and/or are not-for-profit institutions which, coronavirus economics notwithstanding, most businesses do not. How enlightened of you to educate us on what is or isn't a 'useless subject', nobody wants to waste 'resources' , right?
  5. Just my view, but BC has been very conservative in their approach - one might go as far as saying we've been reactivate instead of proactive given the evidence/data from other countries that was widely available to all government/health officials. Can't entirely blame anyone though, we're talking about relatively unprecedented times here. Choices ppl make could potentially cost/save thousands of lives - nobody wants to mk snap decisions.
  6. Military, you may not be aware, use civilian air fields. Plus some essential goods (like a possible vaccine) will perhaps need to be transported via air. The military cannot police ~40milion people - Let's be real. California tried exactly what you are suggesting and their governor basically said it would be policed by 'social pressure', not by military or law enforcement.
  7. You want everyone quarantined and/or arrested if they leave their homes.... Everyone except doctors, nurses, other health professionals, daycare providers, military, police, ambulance, truck drivers, border security, coast Guard, air traffic controllers, grounds crew, lab researchers, manufacturers, ect.... It isn't that simple.
  8. Aren't some outlets reporting that travel bans and large group gathering restrictions will possibly still be in effect into July/Aug? Isn't it WAY too early to be thinking of resuming the schedule? I get it, people want their hockey - I do too - , and its always good to have some sort of plan - but I heard one infectious disease expert describe our time frame as "just the very end of the beginning' with unknown months to go yet? Sorry for being a downer everyone - haven't left house in 5 days....cabin fever definitely setting in.
  9. I've heard similar concerns regarding Gadjo for some time now. I'm not writing him off just yet by any means. BoHo himself showed us what someone is capable of doing when they set their minds to training - one of his biggest knocks was his skating and now I'd say it's a non-issue. Not saying Gadjo is going to become an elite skater but he's so young still, it's definitely not out of the realm of possibly that he brings his skating up to minimally acceptable levels for NHL duty. Then he can be a useful net-presence hopefully for some creative, dynamic linemates.
  10. Statistically this was inevitable. Eventually players, perhaps dozens or even hundreds across the league will be diagnosed. On a positive note - their demographic is likely the most prepared to make it through with the least impact on their personal health.
  11. Don't get me wrong, I'm very empathetic towards all of the various employees that are being put in this difficult position through no fault of their own - but at the same time I'm a realist and know full-well that most businesses will put their own interests over and above all else pandemic or no pandemic. What a person or what a company can afford to do often has little impact on what they actually do in real life unfortunately.
  12. And in other news, Flames announce bankruptcy after paying employee wages for weeks/months with zero revenue coming in. Small market teams, darned if they do, darned if they don't.
  13. One, or maybe 2 guys I can see taking a "coronavirus' deal (yes, I'm creating that term and calling it that) as you indicate above, but if you're suggesting over a third of the team do that I'm not seeing that as realistic since other teams without cap issues will simply offer better non-coronavirus deals. This will, as you point out, be a very interesting spring/summer for the NHL though.
  14. Apparently they've asked all teams to establish arena availability up to and including July - so they're accounting for what you've just mentioned.
  15. Come'on man, there's got to be some other melcacian's around somewhere you could connect with.......
  16. Back to reality for a second here people, after this current situation passes - and it will pass one way or another - reflection is going to allow us to appreciate what we really value in our lives and what our priorities really should be. No game on, how about spending time with family/friends? This is coming from an admitted sports addict so no, I'm not just a 'casual' fan that can simply walk away from my sports and move onto something else to occupy myself with little to no change in my life - but we as fans have to accept that there's zero control here, zero.
  17. Let's go boys! Get the dub and solidify this playoff situation! We're rested & have momentum - they're on the road back-to-back gms coming off loss. We got This!
  18. Remembered reading this article a while ago. It relates to this thread: https://www.defendingbigd.com/2019/2/1/18203044/nhl-new-tracking-data-introduces-more-ways-for-teams-to-get-analytics-wrong-dallas-stars-fancy-stats
  19. If you watch other major sports regularly this is no surprise - it was coming for a while now. MLB has been doing electronic tracking and analysis of baseballs/bats/base runners for many years now. Golf has had a ball-tracker/club swing analyzer for ages. Formula 1 is famous for the amount of data they collect/track for both drivers/cars. I'm sure the NHL has their own 'in-house' reasons for tracking the data (and I could speculate, but it's just speculation) but they will obviously sell it to fans/media as a way to enhance 'fan experience'. I'm sure some of it might be interesting to some fans, but as a life-long hockey fan I'm fine not knowing the amount distance a puck travels during a team's first period power-play versus their 3rd period power-plays thank you.
  20. Bettman "Where do we stand with the new puck boys?" NHL lackys "Its ready for playoffs but probably won't survive a Weber blaster!" Bettman "Don't worry about it, they're not making playoffs, so go ahead and release it to media." NHL Lacky "Sir, yes sir!" Bettman "BTW, do NOT mention Fox sports."
