  1. If we're offered a top 2 RHD (either a young roster player or a non-roster prospect) I don't see why you wouldn't trade him for that type of asset? We've been equally 'meh' as a team with Demko as we have been without him so why not acquire that essential asset (top pairing RHD) if we can?
  2. How about this fun idea - buyouts are unlimited, but the owner personally pays and every buyout is a factor of 10, so if you want to buyout a guy with 8mil left on his current deal that's going to cost the owner $80mil. See how many 'bad contracts' owners authorize their GM's to sign after that.......?
  3. How about we actually address the cause instead of the symptom - which is NHL GM's spending with complete lack of foresight or restraint. A player can't sign a contract, whether it's a fair value or a gross overpayment, if an NHL GM doesn't offer it to them first.
  4. And there you have the answer as to why management salaries in the NHL have no ties to the salary cap or revenue sharing.
  5. I'm all for considering any possibilities. That said, the NHL is it's own worst enemy. They want to grow the game internationally yet withdraw from the largest international stage in the world - the Olympics, and at the same time have one of their NHL franchises play out of a WHL sized arena. It's no wonder the other 'big 3' pro leagues in NA view the NHL as a sideshow. The NHL seems to have no understanding that poor business decisions, in the real world, come with consequences and those consequences typically don't involve other business' paying for your poor decisions.
  6. Sadly, it seems like there's a select group of teams that went for the 'money grab' regarding their regional broadcast rights which didn't pan out, and now every team has to pay for it. I get that there's a 'revenue sharing' agreement in place, but it seems like the same teams in the league have been propping up the exact same teams that can't generate their own revenue and this has been going on for decades. We're not talking about teams who can't generate attendance here (mostly), we're talking about teams that simply made poor business management decisions and partnered with a group they probably shouldn't have because of $$$$ signs now everyone's going to get hit by this.
  7. Obviously every prospect is different, but if you look at Demko (and yes, he has had some injury history and was playing behind Marky and what not), but it took a LOT longer than 3 years from his draft season to when he became an impact player for the Canucks. Even looking at other young up and coming goalies in the league like Oettinger and Knight, their development took a lot longer than 3 years. And yes, I understand you're probably using '3 years' as a ballpark figure - but I think it should be closer to 5 or 6 years to fully expect the complete development of a truly elite goalie. Either way, it would be nice if the club had a clear succession plan in place for not only the goaltending position, but defence as well.
  8. Allvin at the mic on draft day: "We are pleased to select, an average sized, nondescript, middle-six, European winger." Because, you know, BPA, right?
  9. As Brian Burke often said, you're worth whatever anyone is willing to pay for you. When you look at clubs like TO/EDM one has to think in hindsight, they should've invested in an elite goalie - maybe they'd have more PO success if they had invested in the position instead of the other areas. Clubs like TB/Dal/Wpg/NYR have invested in elite goaltending and it shows. I think a club like LA could take that next step to the upper echelon of the NHL if they had an elite goalie locked up in their franchise - I mean, do they really expect Copley, a 31yo career journeyman to be the long-term answer there? The issue with trading Demko for me isn't who are you getting in return (cuz you're certainly not getting another Demko -level goalie) - but rather how do you replace him on the roster both short and long-term?
  10. Shoots left, yes. But he plays a lot of right side.
  11. We need RHD. Just retain 1.5-2 on BB and get back RHD Mukhamadullin. He could probably play full time as soon as next season and he's on ELC which is exactly what we need cap-wise. Plus, did I mention he's RHD!
  12. It's crystal clear that this management group doesn't have a clue how to deal with media in a Canadian market. They haven't figured out that everything they say/do will be examined under a microscope not to mention that even the most trivial baseless conjecture, unless snuffed out, will snowball into an unwieldy, social media-fed monster. They also haven't figured out that Canadian market fans know the game, and know it well - and that they will be able to see directly through the fact the messages that this management group says versus what they actually do - don't add up.
  13. Well, they really can't afford to botch this kids development - we have little to no center depth in the organization. No pressure, but it will be interesting how management/coaching approach this.
  14. So NYI miss PO this year and pick is deferred to next year. Meanwhile NYI win lottery and finish high next season wt BoHo & Bedard and we get 25-30th OA pick.....
  15. Page 3 right now, how long will this thread be when I get home from picking up the kids.............. Well, it.ended up being 59 pages!
  16. Well, the Aquillini family is worth in excess of 3 billion dollars, so the paying of two or three head coaches at the same time is not a large expense - if you wanted to argue the 'optics' of having to pay for 3 head coaches at the same time makes ownership look Mickey Mouse you'd have a much better argument imo. Furthermore, if they were concerned about the amount it was going to cost them to pay 3 coaches, why did they give Tocchet more money than BB when he arguably has a way worse resume?
  17. Coaching salaries don't count against the cap so nobody is buying that explanation, sorry if I misunderstood what you're trying to say.
  18. If we won #2 OA in the draft - would people consider that a win or a loss?

      1st overall or bust.

Still a win -- Fantilli and Carlsson (and to a lesser extent Michkov given his contract) are supposed to be special too.
I doubt the Sabres were too disappointed in 2015 when they got Eichel instead of McDavid (I mean there's still a gap, but Eichel in that instance was still elite, so I think it'd be the same for whichever of the other kids we would get at #2).

  19. Does JR have total autonomy like he publicly said he did, or is FA pulling the strings? Which one is it? For the record - this actually matters to a lot of the fan-base. Either way, it's FA's team to do with as he pleases, I understand that - but I believe a lot of people would like to know if FA is hiding behind management so he doesn't have to answer for virtually anything this team does/doesn't do. Say what you want about a guy like Melnyk in OTT, but he never hid behind anyone - ever - and he never dodged responsibility for his decisions. He was, good or bad, quite transparent - and I think that's all people want from ownership here as well.
