  1. Where exactly did I say 'my planning' was not trade at all? I was more specifically referring to the element on CDC, and there are a LOT of them, that are suggesting we trade guys like Hoglander/MDP/Lind/Gajo/ect....for guys like Toffoli, or Jenner, or whomever else is some aging veteran on an inflated contract, or worse - an expiring contract. Those are the type of trades, at this point in the franchise, that I am COMPLETELY against. If someone proposed a deal which offered our prospect 'A' for their prospect 'A', and the age, value, potential, contract status was all comparable, but we were looking to acquire a prospect in a position we were weaker at, then fine - I got little issue with that. But I do have an issue with suggesting we trade Hoglander for Toffoli or anything remotely close to that kind of trade for our franchise right now.
  2. That list would be impressive, were it not for the fact that every single one of those guys with the exception of Mac has passed through waivers this season without any takers.
  3. I was wondering how far Bergevin's patience would last with him. He's had several opportunities but just couldn't stick with the big club. You'd of thought that with Mtl's recent injury situation, he would've gotten a call-up, but the writing was on the wall when they went with 36y/o ufa Kovalchuk for league minimum over him.
  4. I know this will 'set-off' a portion of CDC who think this kid is invincible, but I'm wondering if the coaching staff will begin to more finely tune Hughes' overall time on ice per game now that we've reached this part of the season. It was painfully obvious that both BB and EP suffered from varying degrees of fatigue in the late stages of their rookie seasons and if we're truly in a dog-fight for the playoffs in a couple months, it would be nice to have Hughes 100% healthy and as fresh as is possibly expected for his first full pro-season. Yes, I know it's a balancing act, play him more now for a better chance of making the playoffs vs. saving him for the stretch drive/possible playoffs but I hope management/coaching staff learned from how clearly EP and BB tailed off in their rookie seasons - yes, they suffered from increased scouting/checking from their opponents in the 2nd half of the season, but even considering this, imo they were both clearly fatigued and showing it.
  5. Why is it, that whenever we acquire any type of depth at any position, there's a certain element here that is immediately looking to diminish said depth? And I'm not just talking about MDP. I've been saying this for a while now - this club doesn't have nearly the depth, at any position, that some people think it does. Marky leaving for personal reasons, and Demko sustaining a concussion are perfect examples of how quickly this so-called 'depth' can be erased.
  6. The Olympics is as much a business as people say the NHL is these days and has less and less to do with 'worlds greatest athletes' anymore. At the end of the day, money talks. If the IOC/IIHF were to acquiesce and give the NHL owners some sort of compensation for interrupting the season and putting their assets at risk through fatigue/injury, then this matter would be settled right quick imo - cost effectiveness as you mentioned could be solved really quickly through a cash pay-out. However the IOC/IIHF is used to telling entire nations what to do, not the other way around where a lowly pro-sports league should dare tell the omnipotent IOC what they should be doing and how. This is a power struggle, we all know it.
  7. I hear you on those points, they are valid concerns from a PA perspective. I'm just going on the fact the PA had no real decision making voice on both Vegas and Seattle expansions recently. But yeah, Europe would be somewhat of a different concept.
  8. I don't believe the NHLPA has any say in expansion decisions, if that's what you are referring to? But I don't know that for sure. Something tells me that if you dangle 30-60'ish full-time NHL jobs/contracts more per season along with a share of increased league revenues (larger cap), I'm certain the PA would look long and hard at that and worry about schedules/playoff formats after they count their money. Owners are definitely not the only greedy benefactors of this sport.
  9. You're right, it's a scheduling & logistics nightmare. But Friedman had a piece on this a few weeks back on HNIC saying it's seriously being discussed at the GM/BOG meetings. One scenario put out there would be to have some or all teams in the European team's division go there for a few weeks at a time and play several games amongst themselves. Then the European team would come here for a few weeks and so on. I didn't make this up it was on HNIC so don't roast me for the idea. Perfect scenario - absolutely not. Good enough idea to convince some rich people it could make themselves even richer....perhaps? NHL seriously wants to be the first major NA sports league to break into the European market. They think they'll reap the financial rewards just like that did in Vegas.... Maybe $$$$$ signs are impairing their better judgement imo?
  10. There's heavy speculation that the NHL is seriously considering expansion to Europe within the next 5-10 years. If true it would be absolutely ignorant of them not to participate in the Olympics imo. That's the only time the NHL is truly, in its own way, on a global stage getting marketed to future fans/ownership.
  11. You missed my point - those two players that you correctly identify as carrying the team both have a lengthy history of injuries, yet Pit bet their entire franchise on them. Same with Wu-Tang, he has a lengthy injury history yet Pit decided to invest in him as their franchise defenceman. I'm not saying our guys are on their level but you can't write guys off solely on the past imo.
  12. You asked for his value, I clearly gave it to you. Core piece.
  13. If I'm the Wild I'm penciling Greenway as a future core piece. So exactly which of our own core would you be willing to part with in exchange? Yeah, that's what I thought. We ain't getting team 'x' core piece for our injured spare parts despite the 20-odd threads indicating such on CDC.
  14. Let's be perfectly honest, it isn't Bettmans sole decision - the NHL owners/BOG representatives will meet, then they will give Bettman their decision, then Bettman will deliver the decision and either take the criticism or the blame - but don't fool yourselves for an instance and believe a group of 30+ billionaires are going to let Bettman make these kinds of decisions all by himself without their official orders. Bettman does what owners want, not the other way around.
  15. My thoughts on our prospects are simple: Stay the course, continue to build through the draft. Keep as many of our own picks as possible and don't sell off our assets (picks or prospects) for overpaid, average-performing veterans on expiring contracts or those locked into team-unfriendly contracts. The only way we keep our core together from a financial perspective is if we build through the draft and have guys join the team at key positions who are on ELC. This means we keep developing and graduating guys from Jr/AHL.
  16. NHL hockey goes in cycles, always has, likely always will. Right now is just a snapshot in time, and times will change. Wasn't that long ago that the Smythe division had 6 cups within 7 years and 10 out of 12 years a team from the Smythe made the finals.
  17. Don't know why people are so quick to easily throw young, developing assets like Lind/Gajo away for high priced, average-performing vets on expiring Contracts? If we want to stay competitive in a cap structure we're going to need assets like Lind/Gajo to develop, make our club and contribute all while on ELC. It's the only way we can hope to re-sign Hughes/EP/BB/Marky/ect. The Miller trade worked out so far, but as we've seen we don't have near the organizational depth to continue to trade picks/prospects for rentals (guys like Toffoli) at this point imo.
  18. Jim Benning, "We're going to get younger, faster, more skilled." CDC, "Let's get a goon to fight guys in the playoffs." Merry Christmas!
  19. The way Markstrom is playing, even considering our record, there's a chance that if he makes it to free agency that he'll get an offer from a team including a NTC or no movement clause if he and his agent are reasonable with their term/$ ask imo. The only way JB can match that without including the 'clauses' , which would be very problematic for the franchise, is by upping the term/$ value of the contract which is risky. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.
  20. Consistency, or lack thereof, is not uncommon among Jr. aged players who are used to dominating lesser competition. When you hear guys like Lind and Gajo relate how their first year of pro-experience went, you really get a sense of what Jr aged players face when making the jump to the pro's. Lind said he had to 'learn' how to be a player off the ice in order to support what he was trying to do on the ice (fitness, nutrition, mental focus, ect....) and Gajo summed it up nicely when he said he didn't have the experience to face men who were playing for their jobs/families versus kids he was facing in jr still just playing a 'game'. Many GM's and coaches will say that there are a lot of Jr. ages players with the 'ability' to play pro, but it's the stuff you don't learn in Jr. that you can't teach that they're missing - they need time in the minors to learn the pro side of the game. This is why I myself, am in no hurry to see any of our prospects, Podz included, make it to the big club before they're truly ready.
  21. I hope he gets called up when he's ready.
