  1. Announcers mentioned a Jamie McGinn comparison. Let's hope he can exceed that offensively. Welcome to the franchise Jonah.
  2. We need more quality defense prospects; we need some size; we need some grit.....a guy like Hague could be a fit.
  3. Welcome to the franchise Elias. We really need this kid to pan out.
  4. Good points R3, without the necessary supports in place within the top 9 the Sedin's production will continue to deteriorate at an exponential pace. If JB can acquire some legitimate scoring in the top 6 this would alleviate the pressure on the twins and allow them to face much more favorable competition on a shift-by-shift basis thereby extending their productivity for a year or two IMO. Right now, every team just plays either their top offensive line and/or their top checking line against the twins - this will essentially cancel them out on a nightly basis. If the twins were facing the oppositions third line (because other teams would be forced to play their top offensive line/checking line vs. our top 2 lines) we'd likely see very good production out of the twins for a while.
  5. Difference being OJ was essentially the consensus best D available. Makar is also the D with the highest ceiling according to many....he's a bit of a high risk/high reward type player which is what worries me somewhat. There are definitely going to be more 'sure bets' available to us at #5 - assuming we stay there that is. I'm wondering how - if at all - the Sbisa loss will affect JB's drafting strategy? On the one hand, any player we get wouldn't likely be in the line-up this year realistically anyway; but on the other hand, Heiskanen is rumored to be close to NHL ready.
  6. LOL at Vilardi @ 14th overall.... worse skaters went higher than that in past drafts.
  7. Actually he seems like the exact type of JB player which worries me because I'd rather select several other players over him.
  8. One of these three is probably gone in ED if the Wild don't make some kind of trade and/or side deal.
  9. You're close.....Powell Peralta Bones Brigade from back in the day!
  10. I like this article.....because they don't mention Glass......meaning he'll be there at #5!
  11. As they don't have any real 'game-changers' in their system on D this wouldn't surprise me at all. They've taken a lot of kids out of western Canada in the past so I think it's safe to say they've scouted Makar as much as anyone else if not more.
  12. All things being equal, I will always, always defer to knowledgeable hockey people who have actually seen the prospects play live versus quality competition. I thought that the book on Makar however is that he was playing among older competition and not only surviving, but dominating. Yes, I know all the concerns about the AJHL vs. BCHL vs. WHL, vs. USHL ect....but when the also-rans were eliminated from the playoffs and his team was facing excellent competition, he still dominated. Furthermore, when he played in the WJAC he dominated there as well - that tournament produced guys like Jost, Tarasenko and Turris. Don't get me wrong, I'm not sold on this kid and am leaning towards Glass who comes from a tried and true league where success can be far more accurately (not perfectly, but more accurately) projected into NHL success - but I don't see him as being risky in the sense that some people do where they're making it sound like taking him at 5 is a wasted pick. I'd have my reservations, but there's enough body of work there for me to be confident he could develop into something useful of a 5th overall in a mediocre draft. He's going to the NCAA where he'd be eligible for 4 years of development as well and he wouldn't have to be stuck like Virt was between leagues (WHL/NHL).
  13. Well, we were stacked in goal in the not too distant past.......but you know........
  14. I think Nsh opened everyone's eyes as to how deadly a team with a deep, deep mobile, defence core can truly be even with an 'average' group of forwards. Yes, there's more to Nashville's success than that, and I realize Weber/Irwin aren't exactly elite, but it really showed what was capable with a deep, mobile defence utilized the right way by the coaching staff. So yeah, why not stack the defense....there's worse ideas out there.
  15. We didn't miss out on Forsling, JB voluntarily chose to let him leave the organization - that's a huge difference.
  16. LOL - I know you didn't make that up HW, but that's a complete joke. In a weaksauce draft like this year where even the top guys are possibly only 2nd line forwards at best they want that... Guess I can't blame them - I'd be asking for OVERPAYMENT too if I was JB and got GIFTED that pick.
  17. I'm not saying I like Makar that much myself, but if JB took him I think it's a reflection of the weak draft imo. Otherwise, there would be absolutely NO way you leave one of Mittelsdat, Glass, Vilardi, Heiskanen, on the table - which is what will happen if Makar is taken at 5.
  18. Props to you R3 for acknowledging this - too many people around here (and elsewhere for that matter) seem to think they have some sort of legitimate scouting perspective on these kids without having ever seen any of them play live in reg or playoffs. I often ask posters if/when they saw 'prospect ___' play live to come to their opinion on the player and they generally shut up quite fast about what they 'think' they know about him. I realize it's internet and people will express this/that but too many of them express it as fact when it's pure conjecture or hearsay.
  19. The science of sport-specific training can and has been debated for a long time. One thing you CAN'T debate however, is that they've been using the SAME type of exercises at the NHL draft combine for a very, very long time. Any player who's career has them on a trajectory to be a professional hockey player had better do their 'due diligence' so to speak and devote at least some training geared towards these specific tests imo. To add to that, if you really are doing the type of training that gets your body into the absolute best shape possible, you should be doing - at least occasionally, some of these so called 'old school' exercises anyway such as pull-ups, bench-presses, dips, ect....the more I think about it, there's really no excuse for an athlete who wants to be a professional hockey player (and could potentially be in the league next year) not to be able to perform these combine tests.
  20. So things are so bad we're using a whopping 5gms as a legit sample size?
  21. Zero chance imo that Mittlestadt doesn't go before several of the guys you list.
  22. Portland was poised to be really good next year already - if this is true they could be exceptionally good.
  23. It wasn't an exhaustive list....there are several other players I could see as good value picks at #5. Necas, Pettersson, Rasmusson, Patrick (if he were to drop for some reason) would all have their value to our club in their own way.
  24. As I have been working in PG a LOT over the past several years I've been fortunate enough to watch Glass play each time Portland was in PG both last season and this including regular season and the playoffs this year. Watching him, one thing that stands out oddly is that no one trait stands out far and above anything else unless you want to say that it's his "Hockey IQ" - I know that's a 'catch phrase' right now in the scouting world, but imo it's true about Glass. He doesn't blow you away with size/physicality/speed/passing/ect....but he's on the ice and involved every time something good happens for his team and he's a relentless competitor - because of this, you notice him. His scouting reports have him compared to Bergeron in that he projects as a solid #2 centerman who is responsible in both ends of the ice. In a 'weaker' draft year, would it not make sense to take a player like this who you know will be a contributor on both sides of the puck instead of taking a 'gamble' on a guy an hoping he pans out as a point producer? Myself, I'm not 100% set on any particular guy this draft - I can see a need/use for Mittlestadt/Glass/Makar/Heisakeinen/Lilegren so it will be interesting to see which way JB goes with his pick.
  25. Not too far off overall value imo, but many here will look at that as the equivalent of trading two firsts (our assets) for a 1st and a 2nd from Dal.
