Who's your Coaching choice now with Trotz on the market?
Fanuck replied to Deets's topic in Canucks Talk
Even if the team comes down to earth and takes a bit of a dip next year compared to where Bruce had them at this year - we're still most likely a playoff team. 57 games isn't an entire season of course, but it's enough of a sample size for JR/Allvin to have said they'll have him back. -
The way I've interpreted it from the time JR got here is that he's in charge - all major decisions from every department of the organization run through him. He is open and invites opinion/perspectives that differ from his, but he has the final say on anything important. Over time, there will be a split and more specific hockey personnel decisions will run through Allvin, and other major decisions pertaining to other departments will go through their respective managers - but we're not there yet especially with regards to hockey personnel. That's how I view what's going on.

I'm sorry warhippy, there's no way I could support the hiring of an individual who knowingly allowed a sexual abuser to continue praying on young men by staying silent about it, not to mention allowed bullying and harassment to fester on a team he was ultimately in charge of so he could personally gain from it. And yes, I understand no one gives an eff what I think in the end. I'm almost 50yo and have been a supporter of this team from my earliest memories - but I would drop this team in a heartbeat if they went that route. -

Don't see Josi being overlooked for it this year. -
Who's your Coaching choice now with Trotz on the market?
Fanuck replied to Deets's topic in Canucks Talk
Maybe that's why Trotz was relieved of his duties - his team wasn't actually 'run and gun' - every single year he was in charge of the Islanders they finished in the bottom third of the entire league in overall scoring but were consistently one of the tightest defensive teams in the league (lowest GA). If management wants a run and gun style team but they are not scoring there's a disconnect somewhere, no? -

BB is our guy. His system clearly suits our personnel. Trotz is borderline Jacques Lemaire 2.0 - nothing wrong with that if you have the right personnel and the commitment from the entire team - but I don't see his system working with who we presently have under contract. That's never been the style of play that ownership (or fans) out here prefer. -
[Report] Islanders have fired head coach Barry Trotz
Fanuck replied to Alflives's topic in General Hockey Discussion
My understanding is that Bruce's original contract stipulates he has until June to make a decision on coming back or not, I believe JR said that at his media availability. -

All time reg season BB has better winning%. PO Trotz has slightly better %. Trots has a cup. Both have won Jack Adams. It's close. Bruce definitely earned another season here imo and JR already publicly said its Bruce's decision to stay or not - would be poor optics and low class to rescind that and go for Trotz - now if Bruce declines his extension, that's different. -

I would see that as a lateral coaching move. Just stick with Bruce - if in fact he wants to be here. If some team offers BB multi-year deal though.... -

Both JR and Allvin speak exceptionally highly of Ryan Johnson. Johnson in turn, speaks highly of Cull. I don't think it's necessarily a given that Cull will be replaced because of this one series loss - Johnson has said numerous times he has done a great job with the club in both Utica and Abby. I've said it before and I'll say it again - you can't develop what you don't have, meaning Cull has been given very few players that would be classified as more than depth/role players at the NHL level. Rathbone (and Demko obviously) was probably the only player on the team in recent seasons who has a legitimate NHL skill-set and he's developing just fine. NHL management as well as Johnson know that in the entire 1st round of the playoffs the Abby/Bakersfield match-up was likely going to be the closest of them all. One overtime game and a 1 goal game support how close this match-up was. It's unfortunate that the AHL 1st round was best of 3 as I suspect if it were 5 or 7 games things could have been different. Nevertheless, you're right, he didn't get the job done in the end and if ownership/managment decide to go a different direction I don't think people will be up in arms about it - perhaps it could be the right time to get new people down there?

You can't develop what you don't have. Give Cull and his coaching staff some actual NHL pospects and I suspect you'd see them develop just fine. There really has not been much, if anything, for Utica/Abby to realistically expect to develop into full-time roster players at the NHL level. The best they've been provided with have been depth/role players if that. The only guy with an NHL level skill-set really has been Rathbone and I'd say he's developing just fine.

Sadly, if this was the best of 5 or 7 (not 3) I suspect the coaches would've made room for Danila somehow/somewhere? But best of 3 means little to no room for errors so you ice your best squad no matter what. Last nights game was a perfect example.

I would do it if I were Van, but I doubt Philly considers either of those scenarios.

On many levels I think NYR are a good fit as well. They will have a need for a versatile forward (center/wing) as their media predicts there's no way they'll be able to re-sign Strome who is hugely important to their success. They have the young assets (particularly ones which we don't have in the system - defence/center) who are not getting the playing time they likely would on a team with less depth than the Rangers and who could be expendable. And they've been trending up recently which typically means you look to add elite talent when the time is right. BUT, The closer I look at the Rangers cap/contract structure - it's clear that if there's interest it would take some considerable manoeuvring to get done. If, as speculated, they won't be able to afford to re-sign Strome, then there would be work to do to trade for & sign Miller there as he'd likely cost the Rangers double or close to it than Strome would. Miller would certainly command a lengthy deal including clauses and the Rangers already have 6 players with some kind of M-NTC or NMC - definitely not ideal for an already top-heavy cap team (between Panarin/Trouba,Kreider/Zib's new deal they make up almost 45% of the entire team cap and they all have NTC clauses of some kind - Miller's new deal would certainly mean over 50% of the entire team cap on 5 guys - like I said, not unheard of, but not an ideal way to build a sustainable contending team). Plus, they've given away a significant number of picks over the next 3 years (they're missing 6 of the next 21 picks) including this year's first if they win 2 PO rounds. So, I like some of the pieces that the Rangers could potentially provide - but a move like that that on the Rangers part would certainly be a sign of them going 'all in' and I'm not sure they're that close just yet - as others have mentioned, anywhere Miller might end up could depend on what several teams find out about themselves in this year's playoffs.

People will say prove it - and there is no way to do that - but I truly believe this was the message from ownership. It was the same message that was given to JB and it was likely the same message given to JR - if we're close go for the playoffs. Now that we've missed PO yet again, I honestly hope that ownership will give JR/Allvin carte blanche to do as they see fit this off-season. The type of weight that Rutherford carries in the hockey world - it's hard to imagine him coming here without the understanding that when he takes over, it's his way with no conditions. I believe that when JR came here he was asked by ownership to make one more go at it with this group, and if that didn't happen make the necessary changes as you see fit with your team. We'll be able to tell if that was the message or not pretty quickly on or around the draft.

[Proposal] Severson, and addition of size and grit
Fanuck replied to HKSR's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
If Allvin is engaging wt NJ I'd like to see something like a sign & trade wt Boeser for Mukhamadullin or Garland for Bahl + picks. NJ gets their scorer they're looking for, we get a younger player at a position of desperate need on an ELC which in turn gives Allvin his coveted cap flexibility. Both Muk and Bahl have the potential to be top 4 shutdown types for a long time in this league, they fit our core age group perfectly. -
I would do that contract with Bo, maybe not 8 years (6 would be better imo) but if your Brock's agent, if you want him to come in a much lower than his QO, you better be offering some term, and that's catch - if you're offering 'term' to compensate for a value lower than his QO, that takes him into his UFA years which we all know usually cost more. But I think in general you're on to something with the rough structure of the 'internal cap'. And I agree, Miller is the 'wild-card' in the mix here.

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Fanuck replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I don't want anything to do with Kane on this club. I don't even care if it seems like he's been behaving in Edm. His hearings over his grievance with SJ are not done - we all know that the NHL would LOVE to stick it to us yet again if were to sign a guy like Kane and then it's decided that his SJ contract was valid and we get screwed somehow - we all know it.
