So before the 9am Can/Lat game and the 9am US/Czech game the standings are: GB 43 CAN 34 AUS 33 FIN 29 USA 23 With so many players in action still for everyone today I will post later as I am home sick with a chest cold that really sucks. Watching Finland beat Russia really lifted my spirits though. -

I have TWO medal events left on the docket and maybe just maybe I can parlay that into points...but yeah, feeling way way behind the rest of you guys, when I thought at the outset I was on top of the world. -

All fixed: i had credited your guys with the correct points and failed to add them up in my head correctly. You have 34, and with the Czech qualiifier now finished: GB has 42!!! Latvia scoring three on Hiller was a shocker for me! I am not sure what to think now...Clearly Canada will advance past Latvia who earned a top 8 finish. I still think Sweden won't be harmed by Slovakia, but I am left wondering: can the Czech Republic upset the US team? Can Finland play Russia hard enough to win late in the game or will Russia really come out flying and try to settle it in the first 30 minutes? (Can you tell I don't believe Russia has a great 60 minute game?) Midnight Pacific Time tonight and some of these questions will come into sharper focus. I sure hope Team Canada's women have a decisive Victory over the Yankees, despite what that will do for C2X's points...lol -

Meanwhile in our pool, GB stretches its lead to 39...while the USA and AUS squads fail to medal in their events this morning. Finland is sitting at 22 points, while the US is at 21. Canada at 33 and Australia sits at 30. Of note is that Team Canada has secured at least 5 points from its women's hockey team Gold Medal Game appearance coming up in two days time, effectively giving them 38 points as we sit now with possible five more coming. -

The above is the coat of arms of Finland inside the Russian Imperial arms....that was pre war.... and here it is post war...note the Finnish Lion is literally dancing on the thrown down arms of the Russians... Okay, that is enough i guess....haha....GO FINLAND GO! EDIT: Note the high elbow pad almost forshadowing that 100 years later the Finns wouldn't object to a couple hard hits to the head of Ovie.....heh. -

OMG, Finland and Russia get the draw of death in the Quarterfinals!! I know it isn't a guarantee, but I think Sweden can beat SLovakia, and Canada and the USA will beat any of CZE/SVK/SUI/LAT..i think...switzerland might put up a fight, same for the Czech Republic...and that makes the Finnish/Russian game the draw of death for the big five. Could The Finnish Lions dance on the Russian sword tomorrow and end Russian dreams of home ice medals? They beat the Russians before...almost 100 years ago... EDIT: ^ Birth of the modern Winter Biathlon: 100,000 Finns on skis defeated a million russians without skis. -

Standings after the womens 2nd to last games have been tabulated are as follows: GB 36 CAN 33 AUS 30 FIN 22 USA 21 Tomorrow we have the elimination rounds of Mens Hockey beginning and AUS and the USA have medals on the line, which could change the landscape in the standings! AUS is counting on Men's Bordercross and Team USA wants a good result in Nordic Combined if I read the schedule right. Of hockey related Importance...Russia and the Czech's play for the right to carry on tomorrow and that is of utmost importance to our teams USA, Australia and Great Britain. Team Canada and Finland has all of their men's hockey players enjoying the bye round, which gives each of the others a chance to gain an advantage, provided the Russian and Czech Sochi teams make it through. I will likely be able to update the Russian - Norway game as it starts at 4;30 am pacific time but the Czech's for team GB will have to wait until tomorrow evening, along with the medal hopefuls. -

I hear ya, Finland doesn't have a huge medal movement to pick from, they were hoping for 4 or 5 medals and maybe one gold/silver. -

So we know that Sweden, The USA, Canada and Finland have bye's to the Quarterfinals. The rest will play qualifyers and if its best vs worst the order is this: Russia Swiss Czech's Slovenia Austria Slovakia Latvia Norway And the Matchups will be: Russia VS Norway Switzerland VS Latvia Czech Republic VS Slovakia Slovenia VS Austria If this is in fact the playdown order, I think Austria could beat Slovenia and SLovakia has a decent enough chance to upset the Czech team. Russia and Switzerland are in the Quarterfinals though unless something goes horribly wrong in their games. -

After the Men's Round Robin our standings are at: GB: 34 CAN: 32 AUS: 28 FIN: 21 USA: 20 Interestingly enough if you take away the medal winning points this game is too tight to call, and there are plenty more medal points coming up! -
The Rangers GM and Director of Hockey Operations and Chief Financial Officer will be in the office dawn to dusk tomorrow ironing out some wrinkles in the lineup, of serious concern is the lack of one bottom six winger. As was previously reported the NYR's have a good amount of draft picks to wield but GM PO is firm on not trading any 1st or 2nd rounders until much much closer to deadline day, if at all.

Two matches left for the Women of Finland, Germany, Japan and Russia, the first game of the two are tomorrow morning and then the morning of the 18th to decide placing 5th/6th and 7th /8th in the Womens Tourny. For Hopefuls USA/SWE/CAN/SUI the next game is Feb 17th to decide seeding for both the Gold Medal game and the Bronze medal Game. SO a total of 2 games left for all our ladies hockey players...I did manage to snag 3 points out of the extra game, badly needed three points at that. AUS and USA also snagged a point out of the extra seeding game. Strategic backfire though? Now my Swedish lady, Pernilla Winberg has to face the US Team and is unlikely to produce points in the first of the two remaining games. -

I think I am up to date now: Several medals yesterday and some good hockey! Next Up: Mens Hockey Group C final round robin games in about 90 minutes time. GB 32 CAN 26 AUS 25 USA 17 FIN 16 -
The Rangers are hoping to add one more middle sixer/third liner to the mix pre-deadline. we have an idea of the type of guy we want, and we have a plethora of 3rd round picks to deal with. Rebuilders with a guy signed through next season who will be skating in May should give us a call.

Some medals will come our way today as AUS has three ladies in the finals for Women's Aerials...GB has a Great Woman who just set the track record for Sochi in Skeleton and is in the finals, and CAN has 2nd place after the short program in Men's Figure Skating. Hard to swallow but I have confidence in my Finnish Men's Hockey program to bring me a medal. -

I am going to show my wife the line "shame I am English" as it should be worth a good laugh....she is busy these days renewing her maroon coloured passport, as yes, she too is English. We figure it is awesome that she and I can live and work anywhere in the EU due to our parents nationalities. Well worth keeping up the citizenship status. Her cousin recently sold her flat in London and moved to Scotland as she put it "Scotland, despite being full of Scotts, is the only place you can get a decent chippy these days without it reeking of curry". I laughed at the totally racist undertones at each end of that statement. -

What do we know about Womens Hockey at Sochi? We know the Canadian and American teams have a bye to the Semi's and each will face the winner of Finland and ??? or Switzerland and ???...the question marks will be filled in after tomorrow mornings games between Japan and Germany and Sweden and Russia. The winner of Russia Sweden will face Switzerland while the loser will face Finland. The Question is will my strategy of picking two 'non north-american' girls pay off in the extra game? -
