  1. two back to back good replies from you and oldie.. Just wanted to suggest in response to the 22:19 a night saying he is doing something right": I see it the other way around: the Defencemen who is getting the most minutes on the ice with a club that won 8 of 24 games is probably not doing very much right. Semantics I guess, but I do like Oldies stats rebuttal, but my look at the stats machine earlier this morning, (scroll up you will see it on this page) tells me that he really isn't doing much good with those minutes. Shouldn't he be higher than 6th out of all our dmen for Hits per 60 minutes? Or higher than 7th for blocks per 60 minutes? All things being relative, obviously he can't take pucks to the head every minute of the game but if he is the one doing the right things he should be in at least the top four of those stats, wouldn't you think? 1 secondary assist PP point in 24 games? That doesn't speak to me to be the best dman in that position either. 6th among our dmen for on ice goal differential as well. I get it, he is eating a lot of minutes and generally we are losing 3/4 of the games where he eats a lot of minutes. Last i checked you couldn't lose worse than losing in the NHL when it is all said and done you either get 2 points or 1 point or no points in a game. 3/4 of the games where Myers gets the most ice time, we lose. I am not at all upset by the great posts that contradict me and add really good thought and points to the discussion, so thank you guys. Much appreciated.
  2. I got zero goals in 1 minute but you got 1 goal in 1000 minutes. You are clearly the better goal scorer, by your logic.
  3. I just can't understand why folks can't say or admit or see that while yes he has the most minutes, he is doing really not much with them. My whole argument is that we should give those minutes to someone else for a short window and see how they do. I am not blind to what everyone is saying in response to my OP, however I can't get past how the rebuttal seems to be attacking me personally OR pointing out he gets all the games and the most minutes per game. That is what I am exactly also saying: time to try someone else getting all the games and the most minutes per game because thus far, with Myers leading the D charge, our D sucks. I think you all made my case for me, so thank you for that.
  4. The Rangers white paper on possible trade block players is burning up social media hashtags and may stir some controversy. But is the list accurate and did it originate with the GM at Madison Square Garden? GM Primal Optimist confirms a big shift in the depth charts is coming and that loads of players may be available for picks and prospects. He would not comment on any of the 23 players mentioned in the leak other than to say, obviously the ask for some of these fine gentlemen will be higher than some others.
  5. Sept 14th Trade Jan Rutta FC: Van 4th 2022 to Calgary if Jan Rutta sees 10 NHL games in the 20-21 season Kobayashi Maru/Calgary We assumed this would be the case, but there was some indication that there was a chance Jan would not be able to meet the rather low bar. Fair is fair and we still feel Jan Rutta was worth this 4th round pick. Hope you get something nice for yourself! I believe this is the end of our obligations under FC's. Nice. Thank you to Nail for tracking and completing the FC.
  6. WHen you adjust for time on the ice, Myers is 6th for hits among Dmen and 7th for blocks, so really, no he isn't 2nd and 3rd respectively, he is just sucking up more ice than the other Dmen for, not too sure for why actually, that is the core of my argument to bench him for a bit. Thank you. I am glad we can find this common ground. WOuld you agree that suck/contract, maybe the 6million dollar myers might top out our Dmen suckage per dollar spent? Or rather dollar spent per suckage? I am not arguing about the team as a whole or about hughes having a sophomore slump year, but comparing the 31 year old 6m dman to the 21 year old 900k dman is a bit odd, don't you think? Hughes is rising to his natural level of NHL calibre Dman still, his ceiling is all in front of him. Myers ceilling is all behind him and if he kinda sucks at 31, imagine how he will do at 32, 33 and 34 when his deal is in its last year. The more I listen to replies and the more I look at the numbers, the more I wanna actually trade him while he still has one foot in the not sucking column.
  7. Just in response to your opening statement and poll, kudos, good thread! I don't think much more needs to happen than we already know will happen, regarding the short term future of the team: Next season a buyout of L.E only costs us 2m of cap space in back to back years. whew. two seasons from now Louuuuuuu's cap recapture penalty that the league should have never levied on us with a new CBA changing the rules of the contract he was signed under .. comes off the cap. Next season we have POD coming over from the KHL, in fact this April!!! Next season we will have yet another good draft pick, presumably, to add to our arsenal of talent. Next season Sven Baertschi's 2.3 million of burried contract comes off the books Ryan SPooner's contract buyout of 1m cap charge comes off the books Sutter's 4.375 million deal expires and if we decide to move on from him...becomes free cash Edlers 6 million deal expires and if we decide to move on from him.. becomes free cash Total cap money freed immediately after this season: $17,675,000 and then the following season's end we are done with LU's recapture and free up another $3,035,212. That alone, just getting out of cap space hell, while adding PODKOLTZIN to the forward group will do wonders for our club. For all these reasons I am not as concerned as the general mood on CDC, but we will need to, in my mind, replace Sutter and Eriksson up front and Edler and another D down below, so there will be the need to wrangle 3 UFA skaters with our newfound cap space. Two D and a UFA F. EDITED: mistake in math in bolded number, originally I thought it was around 11.5m but turns out to be close to 18 million!
  8. *All stats from NHL.com stat machine, limited to JUST Canucks Dmen for the current season, this morning. Tyler Myers: Hits per 60minutes; Myers is 6th Blocked Shots per 60: Myers is 7th Give aways 3rd Take aways 4th Penalty Minutes; 1st by a mile. 37 with runner up notching 11 less minutes. The only Dman with a match penalty thus far. 1 major and 11 minors in 24 games. 6th in shot attempt percentage 7th in unblocked shot attempt percentage 5th in 'on ice goals for' percentage 6th in individual shot attempts per 60 minutes 7th 5v5 on ice shooting percentage 0 PP goals 1 PP secondary assist 5 PP shots from Myers in 21.42 minutes of PP time (3rd highest on team) 1 short handed goal (83 minutes short handed TOI) **Thrilled to see it, but an outlier stat for judging Dmen on. 1 short handed assist (83 minutes short handed TOI) 6th in on ice even strength goal differential among all Dmen in Vancouver Summary as I see it; the only thing that Myers is in the top half of our Dmen rankings in is: giving the puck away he is in the top half. o.O not scoring on PP shots, he is in the top half. O.0 earning a million dollars per 13 inches of height: top half. 0.o But yes, I can see where some of you think he is the best dman on the club. Surely you have your reasons beyond this thread sucks and I am an idiot. LOL
  9. Wait wait wait. IMO Mike V would need to clear waivers before he re-enters the league and several clubs, including Van would pick him up as an AGM well before he passed through waivers to land in PIttsburgh.. where he, you know, does STUFF to ahhh win. (*don't worry guys, I am takin the bullet here)
  10. I find it odd that you don't see a point to my thread, but you absolutely had to post in it, and just to insult me personally. Sigh. If you are not part of the civil discussion your part of the problem.
  11. I don't disagree, hadn't actually paid attn to the D coach much but I have always thought coaches either multiply a teams ability by 1.1 or 0.9, rarely are they a neutral party in the teams wellbeing in the standings. It could very well be that we need to end the Baumer experiment on D. I have nothing against him but several replies here point to Baumer as the Dcoach and the problem. Might be cheaper and easier though to try benching a guy who has yet to sit a game this year, but who gives the puck away twice as often as he takes it away, sits in the box 1.5 minutes a game and is woefully outscored at five on five when he is on the ice. I see a boat load of disagreement though, and I am aware that my opinion is just as good as the other 2.7 million opinions on the Canucks. I don't think we are far off of clicking though. Just needs a tweak or two and we will win 60% instead of lose 60%.
  12. perhaps a few games of (in no particular order) Hughes, Benn, Edler, Joulevi, Hamonic, Schmidt ... again just a couple games, heck make em those tough road games we give up the early goal and lose everytime thereof. What is to lose from looking at it?
  13. I hadn't really considered who the D coach was/is but you may have a very valid point right there!
  14. I liked it at the time of the signing, much like L.E. at the time of the signing. I am just not feeling it as a 6m dollar dman who doesn't put up a lot of PP points at all here, i would want that Dman to be defensive if he isn't ripping it up at the other end. Hughes is specifically here to rip it up at the other end, I don't see that as Myers role, yet it is being used to justify his poor defensive play. When I see him always on the losing end of five on five play, always putting 1.5 mins a game in the sin bin and always giving away the puck twice as often as taking away the puck: its basics 101 in my own humble opinion that we could possibly enjoy sitting him on the bench for just two games and having a look at another pairing in his place. I never said I wanted to fire him, but I want to see something else for a look and compare that look to the one we all see now: a trajectory that is sub-playoffs. COnsider if you will: we bench or send Myers to the taxi squad for two games and we win both with much nicer giveaway stats, much nicer plm's and much nicer goals against at even strength. The only way to see if that would be a result would be to try it, right? I voted to send him to the taxi squad for a couple games as a message to him and the rest of the D. (I am not very happy with any of this here in the quote, but of the three (*and I have never been a really big Edler fan) Myers seems to me a bit of a lynchpin in the fails. I really suspect removing him will reduce the overall suck on the blueline. I can't quantify my gut on it any more than I already have though. I suspect it may be an issue of everyone being used slightly out of their lane to accommodate Myers being used in an incorrect fashion) I am aware my post is going to be not well received by 50% of the readership, I just ask that folks don't get personal or abusive in their comments, but please do keep commenting. If anyone reading along is interested in trying their hand at being a GM of a club...perhaps consider joining CDCGML, the Canucks.com General Managers League in the Fantasy Hockey section of the forums. I can point you to the league officials who are taking applications now for a few vacancies. Come and beat me. lol. ; )
  15. I will certainly concede that point! I was amazed it was only that!! My take on this year is only anecdotal but when ever I am watching specifically the D pairings, I find myself tensing up at something Myers is doing or not doing, what seems like seconds before we are scored upon. lol. I was the most shocked to see his even strength +- at just minus 1 so far, lol.
  16. he did exactly that with his 4.5 years with what we can call PEAK winnipeg, the team he was a part of was on top of their game for that timeframe. before and after that though, I don't really view his offense as worth his lack of defense and his penalty addiction. I wonder though if those other three Dmen are much more worth having in the Offensive zone and not as bad at having in the Defensive zone? Curious, not clinging to my guns declaring I am right, just curious about the exact role for Myers not being the right fit for Myers. Shrug, I feel our D would be better all around with the subtraction of the one player. Thing is I won't know and can't show it until there is a moment that he is subtracted. Hopefully, for me, I will get to see a Canucks game soon where Myers is on the Taxi Squad to save his 6million cap hit for a few days time, and we try a few young fellows out in his stead. Not permanently, but for a look see.
  17. Not disagreeing but glad you did that stat collection, thank you. Hoping to see MORE Juolevi and less Myers on the PK. I wonder, and will get around to looking, how our D stacks up on PK TOI.
  18. You know me. I rarely pick out a Canucks player to pick on but ONE thing has really stood out to me the last month and a bit. Tyler Myers is not a very skilled Defensemen. He can wrack up the apples, but he can't keep the biscuit out of OUR basket. I will be brief though and listen to what you all have to say about it. In Buffalo, after his rookie and followup year, Myers experienced four years of defensive liability as shown in his +-. 2012-13: five total points while not on the power play and ended the year -8 (13 even strength goals against to his clubs 5 while he was on the ice in just 39 games) 2013-14: MINUS 26!! 13 even strength points for him and finished -26, or 33 goals against at even strength to 13 for the nucks with him on the ice. 2014-15: Buffalo, 9 even strength points for Myers traded when +- was minus15, or "24 goals against vs 9 for with Myers on the ice". Then we hit a stretch in WPG where he must have been protected as he managed all 4.5 years there in the positive side of the +-, with his 'best' year notching 17 of 36 points on the power play!! And yet with his best productive year of his career he was only +9 at even strength. Then the Canucks Last season: 7 PP points 14 even str points and finished -7 (yup both of the canuck seasons are minus seasons for Myers.) 21 goals against and 14 goals for with myers on the ice at evens This season: 10 even strength points and -1 thus far in 24 games, but my evidence this year is more anecdotal: for instance last night on the PK he chose to lay down for several seconds and seemed like an eternity that he lay on his side on purpose not moving while the opponents passed a few times and quickly scored. 37 penalty minutes in 24 games too, which needs to be mentioned: over one and a half minutes a game he is NOT defending or attacking but sitting in the sin bin!!! Just noticed his take away to give away this year is horrendous as well. 6 takeaways and 19 giveaways in 24 games ... i shouldn't be shocked because that stat has always been bad for him, but last year was his only year of being roughly equal in giveaway to takeaway ratios. Sadly I find him to be a liability that does not get made up for in what he brings to the party and would rather see young prospects get some valuable time in real game situations to improve their futures. Of all the Canucks signings the last handful of years, this is the one I don't like the most. So without going on about it myself, I am very curious to know WHY Tyler Minus was on the PK to begin with, and why he isn't being sat for a game here and there to allow more defensively sound up and coming Canucks get experience? I will stop short of wishing him traded away, but I am less than happy with Myers out of all the Canucks thus far. I would love to know all your thoughts on the topic, but please don't waste everyone's time scolding me for my topic. They can't all be rosy.
  19. did you just buy a whole family for your club? o.O
  20. Shayne has had some setbacks recently, but we realize his talent level and quite honestly, his age, which is in the range that the majority of Dmen actually reach NHL ready maturity being a factor, It was worth the 3rd and Connor Carrick bring him into the organization. Connor will be missed, however we are pretty sure Ghost slightly below his average ability is still equal to filling Carrick's position. Felt it was too good to pass up the opportunity. Thanks to Dak Prescott for a good negotiating experience, very happy with that and its outcome. Fingers crossed on Ghost reclaiming his potential in this or future seasons. Well, never say never is the take away I guess. I never thought I would trade away Varlamov to be honest. When I swung for the fences the GM accepted after some minor back and forth issues over the small stuff. There was another prospect who was going to come my way, turned into 2m retention instead. All in all, I am thrilled to bring in Urho Vaakanainen, 22 year old Boston prospect drafted 18th overall in 2017 entry draft. Gold and Silver at the U18 WJC's in two appearances there, and GOLD at the U20 WJC's !!! He has 1 point in one NHL appearance for BOston this year, 1 goal in two appearances on loan to the Finnish Liiga and 0 for 3 games in the AHL this year. High IQ and smooth skating should cement his NHL position for years to come. Bringing in Holtby to replace Varly was an integral part of the deal, obviously, and we think we came away in okay position with this swap, always nice to have a 'hometown favourite' in the fold, and we believe Holtby will stand up very well to the job in front of him. Jesper Lindgren (4th round 2015 Toronto draftee) is a prospect we like, knowing the Lindgren extended family through my extended family we were comfortable with him coming over in the deal. The Nimble puck carrier patrols the blue line with gusto despite his slim build scouts said "a talented offensive blueliner who plays an adaptive, new-age style of hockey", and that is intriguing for us. He put up 19 points in 45 Liiga games two years ago, 9 points in 31 AHL games last season as he cut his North American teeth and thus far this year has stood out for MODO in the Allsvenskan League in Sweden with 18 points in 25 games!! A great prospect to bring into the fold. The 6 footer will need to add some bulk to his 160 pound frame to gain some longevity in the NHL, but he is not far from being a Big League blueliner in the Rangers sweater. On top of the three players, the Goalie to replace Varly and the two blueliner prospects to help our club depth, we also managed to replace the 1st round draft pick we spent on Ilya Samsonov last week, a stellar netminder who will likely have a long smooth NHL career once he secures himself out of "young age". haha. And rounding out the deal was a 3rd to eventually pick up a forward prospect with. Well balanced return and decent return for someone of Semyon Varlamov's quality and character, not to mention point production in the GML!! Many thanks to Mike V, who suffered through a few 'goram dutchmen' jokes and a somewhat lengthy back and forth. I did NOT give up Varly for nothing, I am sure folks will agree. Thanks Mike, was fun working this one out. All in all, along with the move to bring in Ilya Samsonov, I think the team is getting re-invigorated and a bit deeper with every move. Something we need to continue in order to further the current trajectory and rise all the way up the charts to fifth in the Division, or what you would call top 12 in the league, haha. 1st WSH 1261 6th PHI 1291 10th NYI 1149 11th NJD 1121 <--- target 13th CBJ 1081 23rd PITT 879 25th NYR 855 26th CAR 849
  21. I think it is ingrained behaviour, isn't this near the TDL in a regular year? haha We are all in trade mode by end Feb it seems.
  22. Recall: the Vancouver Canucks recall Logan Brown.
  23. Recall: The New York Rangers recall Rasmus Kupari
