This proposal has potential potential to be Messier 2.0 what makes you think a former Captain of our divisional rival wants to come here to play 3rd fiddle to Petey and Bo? What makes you think he comes here and sees a Cup potential team? He might slide into the Bruins on deadline day, what with them running away with the league, But he comes here and says , "I brought the only guy that can play D and I will be retired long before this team is ready" " I guess I coast into the sunset" I like Manson though, I wonder how we missed him playing in Salmon Arm for 2 years before draft day Do we even have a BC scout?

I was not talking about style so much as probable ceiling. He does not play like Tanev either, but may need to adopt that style to find a role
-
I'm kind of thinking, best case scenario, Chris Tanev similar number in college to Tanev and Stetcher Rafferty was the go to guy offensively last year in Utica, but will not supplant Hughes or probably Rathbone if he makes it, so you have a support D-man who will need to be the defensive stalwart PK guy if he is to make the NHL Sizewise he is similar to Tanev and bigger than Stetcher, but the one eye thing may come into play if he move into the NHL. I could see him being the defensive #6, best case #4 I think Connaughton is a good comparison

what is it you see in Bailey? He is bigger, by 2 " and 20# and younger by 2 years but Leivo has out score him .78ppg to .66ppg in the AHL and .38ppg to .14 ppg in the NHL Bailey's size and numbers are closer to Tyler Graovac although he is 5 years younger Do you see Bailey having a big break out year?

I said a couple of months ago thath the NHL could come out of this smelling like arose or like greedy farts. I sense the longer this goes, the less the fans care. Some do. I listened to a guy on radio today that said motorcycle sales have tanked ( read that as disgressionary purchases) and car sales have dropped 80% and restaurants are way down because they are closed, that means about 1/2 of the advertizers are in the tank, Beer, Subway and pizza are doing fine. Now I am not saying the NHL/NHLPA are in agreement with you, but if they are saying, "We don't want to lose our share of the pie" while fans and sponcers are all taking a hit, they still have the possibility to look really bad. Add to that 3 games a day on summer ice in empty arenas and the product may not be up to snuff for advertizers to want to continue paying top dollar. If the players are donating their money to worthy causes they can come out looking like stars, if they are playing because they are worried about escrow, they may have an image problem.

and yet it is the exact same narrative we heard when Benning was hired How many times have you read "Benning will work his magic on draft day"?

How will the NHL treat conditional trades in the 2020 draft
lmm replied to Ray_Cathode's topic in Canucks Talk
Lets look at 2003, considered the deepest draft ever and 2013 after 18 in 2003 were 4x 1000+ gamers in the first, plus Bergeron, Weber, Ericksson Howard, and Backes in the second, play Byfugien, Pavelski and a few others later in the draft best player in the top 10 in 2013 was Alex Galchenyuk after 10 in 2013 you might get Phil Forsburg, Hertyl, Teravainen Vaselevzki or Pearson in the first round and Severson in the 2nd and Payrenko in the 3rd if you are both lucky and astute. Now to be fair, I don't know if 2020 is as good as 2003 or if 2021 wil be as bad as 2013, but if it was close I might want to stick with 18 in 2003, but as you said, every second draft is "The best yet". -
How will the NHL treat conditional trades in the 2020 draft
lmm replied to Ray_Cathode's topic in Canucks Talk
Yes the interesting thing in this article is they seem to have apretty good handle on Murky and cut and dried, However, they seem to think the Canuck deal is cut and dried when it is not. The deal doesn't say "If the Canuckes are top 16 in their conference" it says "makes the playoff" if there are no playoffs, the Canucks do not make the playoff. I would think this is a canditate for a re-work. The Canucks could argue that they were counting on playoff revenue or experience for their young players as the benefit from the lost pick. NO revenue and no playoff experience would seem to make this deal a slide to next year candidate -
I think that is one way of looking at things. But don't you find it a little funny that Jim is not offering Judd a raise? I would think if Jim was praising his staff, the staff would expect a raise, or promotion. It certainly works that way with the players. Everyone on the team is expecting a raise, but some fans think Stetcher might not get one, Is Judd Brackett the equivalent of Troy Stetcher? I see some of the fan base that seem to feel Brackett is the brains and about an equal number of fans that think Jim should just "Drive Judd to the airport" But I see a larger number of fans who see this as a needless power struggle that will likely do more damage than good for the team. This seems like a consolidation of power between Benning and Weisbrod. I think the "we" you are talking about happened 2 years ago, when Quinn Hughes was drafted, reports are things have gone south starting last draft, Did you hear a "we" comment about 2019 picks? And maybe the "we" was Jim and Weisbrod. The reports I have read are more along the line of,"Things are getting out of hand in vancouver, and that is not good" If I was writing, the question i would ask, "Why, and why now?" What I find interesting, is that the people who are staunchly supporting Benning seem to support "old School" management, like Toe Blake or Punch Imlach, real "My way or the High-way" type guys. The irony is that Benning is promoting a "new wave" type of management with 2 head scouts at the top and neither seem all that interested in being the GM or moving to President. The two ideologies seem incongruent. Now I am fine with innovative ways of managing the team, I supported much of what Gillis tried to do, OK not making Lou Captain, but sleep doctors and such I was oK with. Not his drafting though, Jim has Gillis hands down on drafting, but their trades and signings are about equal. So maybe Judd is redundant as the 3rd scout, would it make more sense to me to hire a guy that can make trades?

not sure exactly about the rules of staff, but Pat Quinn and the Cancuks got in trouble because he signed in Vancouver while he was stilll LA coach. One of the many reason the Canucks don't catch a break with the league

I disagree. Leipsic's comments would not have been inapropriate in the 50-60-70. You've no doubpt seen retro ads of who to spank your wife to keep her in line. Not acceptable today, but they were. Trudeau's black face has several things going for it, 1 it was a long time ago, and we like to believe people deserve a second chance. 2 he was running against Andrew Sheer, who currently opposes abortion 3 society values womens issues over black issues 4 the political system is rigged What happens to Leipsic is not social totalitarianism. He has not been condemmed to jail or work camp because of his mistake, he is free to look for work with like minded people. If he applied to work for me, I would turn him down. Would you hire him? He has not been banned from the NHL, the Caps have excersized their right to end their relationship, however should another team want to take a chance, I am sure there are some hoops that Leipsic could jump to get back in the league. His biggest problem is that there is not enough upside to take that chance, but Kassian got his chance and I think we can all agree, it was his last.

I thought that read on here, that the system was Wiesbrod's? Media/social media is a funny/dangerous thing. We(the larger we) have Duschene +co in a taxi and more recently Leipsic destroying his career, and even those of uswho can't tweet say,"they should have known better". I think mic'd up players is awesome, but you usually hear them warn their buddies, "I'm wired" I have never understood how the Canucks see value in filming their draft. It seems to me some things are just better not blabbed to the world. Whatt is next Canucks Medicine? Benning, " Rooster has a lower body injury" Up next 'Knee reconstructive surgery with Dr Bill Regan' I am joking, kind of. Also, and I know I have brought this up too many time, the Canucks feature Jake and Jarod hangin with the Beibs, then 2 weeks later Danky is upset because theyoung guys aren't pulling their weight. you know, maybe featuring Kids doing Kid stuff on an NHL team is not the best feature to promote your team. neither is draft day coverage. Just my opinion. If you could bug their phone and table, that would be great pirate radio, but their santitized 3 weeks after the fact videos seem kind of fake newsy.

Maybe we are a special place full of rabid fans Canuckville has known Thomas Gradin and Ron Delorme (for good but mostly bad) for a long time
-
I am not going down this rabbit hole with you . you are on your own
-
yea, that 'good luck' attitude is exactly what continues to get the Canucks in trouble Its the "Drive him to the airport" mantality that Canuck fans love to fall back on Catch phrases and cliches are really handy when you are too lazy or too dumb to find a better answer But if you are happy being stumped....

I know that Problem solving is part of the job

If Gear has been involved for 4 years, doesn't that mean he was involved with Loui, Sutter, Beagle, Schaller, Boeser, Roussell, Myers It will be interesting to see if he can and will make changes to the Canucks overpaying/overterm situation I definitely side with the Cult of Judd, haha, but have no info on Gear pro or con. Gear is like a ghost in all this. Maybe Gear is the Quinn Petey of hockey management, waiting to make great strides, maybe he is not. Chris Gear is the great unknown
-
just to be clear, I am not in favour of John Wiesbrod did you miss the haha

This is my feeling as well. For those of us who have watched in amazement while this team has imploded in the past, a repeat seems very possible. But the rah rah guys say, "No way! Jim has too much character" And I do agree with them that one guy should not be bigger than the team. But look back at the Quinn era, he is still my favorite Canuck executive, but it was under his watch that Larionov was let walk, and the Gretzky, Bure and Messier fiascos happened. Jim and Pat are similar, Pat was better in front of the mic, (but he was not Brian Burke, never met a mic he didn't like, moved into showbusiness), kind of 'old school' and both seem(ed) to want to leave their position. Pat kept trying to replace himself as coach and move on to GM and/or President of the Hockey/Basketball empire, while Jim want to leave the GM duties to someone else. Give Pat credit, he did made GM(now Rogers) arena which was instumental in bringing the Grizzlies to town, but the hockey team suffered and the Griffiths could no longer afford to retain the ownership. JIm has made some good moves and some bad ones, but will the Canucks be short on GM while he returns to scouting?
-
that was a brutal draft the only forward to outscore Jankowski in the next 29 picks is Brock McGinn the draft included Yak, G Reinhart,Pouliot, Trouba and Gaunce, oh and Liepsic has NHL.com done the redraft? Jankowski might move up haha
-
that wqas not luck that was a really bad poker face
-
good points one thing Judd has in his favour is that he has never spoken in front of a mic. Jim does not look good in front of a mic and that gives the Never-Bennings fuel to fodder But you are right, this does kind of come down to the Cult of Judd vs the Cult of Jim. I do believe that when this is all said and done, when Jim moves on, that he will go back to scouting and not seek another GM job. And you never know, maybe Judd moves on, gets an asst GM job and makes an ass of himself when the mic is on. I asked earlier what people have on Chris Gear? Good or Bad. There was no response. So, Wiesbrod is bad, Jim is a Tyrannical Saint, Judd is either a mystical scout legend or an imposter living off Jim's imperical wisdom, and Chris Gear (the forgotten man in all this) is either the second coming of Sir Lawrence Gilman or he is not.

What isn't arguable is that Benning is the GM. full stopo. Who runs the franchise? has been up for debate since the Torts hiring Generally speaking the GM does not fire the President, but this is Canuckville, maybe its actually run by Christian Aquelini, (dressing room attendant) Benning will not live or die with our success, but he may get fired and end up a scout or head scout for another franchise. We are not succeeding, we are trending in the right direction. Name another team that is succeeding with 4 straight playoff misses? If there is any dissonance then they can leave... that one I also agree with, but if that is Jim's best problem solving tool, I don't have much hope for the long term success. https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1NNVC_enCA476CA478&q=define+totalitarianism&forcedict=totalitarianism&dictcorpus=en-US&expnd=1 Is this your road to success? cool

Night and day you say? Well we have transitioned away from the worst coach we have seen in the last 20 years. Was Willie Trevor's guy? He has hit on 2 of the best draft picks ever, but there is no concensus that they were jim's picks or Judd's or Wiesbrod's or Lingren's of Delorme's. But somehow we picked those guys, and that was good. And Trevor was around when Petey was picked What is really being debated is whether it is causation or coincidence... by Benning, by Brackett, by Wiesbrod or were we just lucky those guys fell to us? Like PL Dubois did not
