  1. That may all be true but the Sedins did not live up to their 4 year $28M contracts signed on Nov 1, 2013 they were just 33 at the time but those contracts started the cycle we are onw in of waiting for bad big contracts to expire first it was the Sedins then is was Loui and now we have OEL The Sedins might have been nearly worth the contracts in year 1, but the final 3 years at $7M for about 50 points was terrible Loui was never worth $6M in a Canuck uni and OEL is not worth $7 M now, and we have some time left to ponder the rest of it So I guess the question with JT is how many years will he be worth his deal and how many will we be back where we have been since 2014, waiting out another bad contract?
  2. I would say most posters in this thread have over-hyped that is everyone but the person giving Green a -4 and Dickie a 0
  3. The OP seems pretty accurate but high across the board for all you people giving out 9.5s and 10s, does that mean you would not trade those players for any player in the league? No Rockets, no Art Ross', no Harts, No Norris', No Vez's =no 10s
  4. Are you sure aboiut that? Wiki says he has been in Montreal and Pittsburg since 2006 when was he doing all that off shore winning?
  5. Here is the thing though I just looked at Pittsburg, LA, Chicago and Vancouver the oldest core players to get paid big dough on the first 3 teams were Keith and Brown at 26 years of age That was when they won their first cup Toews, Kane, Doughty, Kopitar, Sid and Geno were all between 21-24 The Sedins were 28 in 2009-10 when they broke out, the year before the finals visit JT is 28 just like the Sedins were Its true you need to pay to play, but you need to be smart about it, Loui, cough cough Ericksson, or anyone from that famous FA class My question is would you have paid JT that dough last year or the year before? The guys I listed above were earning those big contracts while still on their ELCs
  6. i always thought the Tavares thing was like Hamhius, when he signed in Vancouver other teams made good offers, but the player had already chosen where he would play I don't think you could fault Philly or Nashville for not signing Hamhius I don't know if there was another reason Tavares left NYI Some guys just say I am going to free agency NYI could have been like Vancouver, just losing for too long, (Many Canuck fans think if the Canucks don't make the playoffs nxt year that JT and Bo bolt) maybe they irked JT with the previous contract and he did not wish to negotiate again
  7. I agree with you there but the similarities are the fact the team was in a real funk playing under Torts and Green Remember Torts yelling at Edler and Hansen on the bench, and Edler putting up a -39 season Edler was not that bad a player, he was performing poorly under Torts. Under Green, the team had epic (and I don't use that term loosely) PK failure, and PP failure and Brock and Petey underperforming (admittedly, Brock's might be a different issue) Fans booing, chanting, hiring aircraft signage and ultimately the jersey on the ice. The exact details may be different, but the overall stress surrounding the team was similar And the next coach breathed new life into the team. I am not suggesting that coach Bruce is the equivalent of Willie, because as you pointed out Bruce has a better resume I am saying the situation they stepped into was similar and the first season result was similar
  8. So you are saying Jim and Patrick are both smart and dumb at the same time but that you agree with one but not the other The also said they wanted to free up cap space but you are conveniently ignoring that necessity so, they shed Hamonic and Motte and replaced them with Dermot and Richardson and they made cap space ( one of the stated goals) You seem to want to blame the Canucks missing the playoffs on the trading of one player but you are ignoring that Pearson got injured on April 7 and Horvat on April 14 and Highmore (Again) from March 24 - April 18 and that Dickinson returned on April 3, giving him 13 games to prove his worth People like to talk about windows, like windows to compete for the cup, or free agency window, or buy out window I would say that JR and Alvin are in the assessment window, Jim said early that that is what he was going to do, before he talked about keeping Miller. The playoff window was still open after the trade deadline, and several players were given the opportunity to help the team climb through Dickinson underwhelmed Highmore got injured again Lammikko score one apple post deadline Horvat and Pearson got injured, suffice to say that Chiasson stepped up to replace Pearson and Petey scored 5 goals in the 4 games following Horvat's injury IDK how you'd score that, but to me that is a win for Petey and Chiasson and a loss for Lammikko, Dickie and Highmore. Some other guys got looks too, Dries looked better than Petan and Lockwood got shut out in 13 games, but looked good at time, probably deserves another chance, but is not a lock for any spot on the team. those were opportunities give by the team to players to step up some did some didn't that to me is Jim and Alvin using their assessment window, It does not last forever
  9. you seem to moving your argument to "THE CANUCKS WOULD 100% MADE THE PLAYOFFS IF MOTTE WASN'T TRADED" which is ironic because you are using stats to prove the low value of a 4th rounder, stats below provided by The Lock while ignoring the low statistical chance the Canucks had of making the playoffs ( think a 4th round pick has a better chance of playing in the playoffs than the Canucks did on March 20, 2022) I might also add that the Canucks went 4-0-1 in the games following Mottes departure but went 1-2-1 after Bo Horvat got injured, maybe that was a larger factor in the Canucks demise I would suggest that the time for "Asset Management" would be early in a new managements tenure As I mentioned, your argument assumes the Canucks made the playoffs if Motte was not traded. How does Management look if they did not traded Mottebut stll missed the playoffs? And I have to ask you this, in terms of the great deals and mistakes made by Canuck GMs, do you think anyone will be talking about trading Tyler Motte in 5-10-20 years time?
  10. you are starting to sound like you've spent too much time listening to JB remember Wayne Gretzky " you don't score on 100% of the shots you don't take And that is especially funny cuz Motte was a forth rounder himself and Lammikko a 3rd while Highmore was not drafted, but traded for 5th rounder Adam Gaudette Kinda ruins that theory
  11. Oh for the love of Motte You do know he got injured after 9 games, not saying he would hve got injured if he didn't get traded, but he is injury prone Also Richardson looked pretty good in Mottes place, we probably can't afford Richy if no Motte trade Also if Lammikko and Highmore need Motte that much in order to be useful NHL players, that is good information for a club needing to improve I don't feel the LOVE for the Motto line like some around here I think the team could use an upgrade on all 3 of those players Bigger Better FasterMeaner More Reliable that is the 4th line I want next year
  12. I like the headline midway through "Jim Benning is not a good GM"
  13. Loui E was not the problem per se if his cap hit was $1,5 mil no one would have complained either
  14. nice analogy but usually when you consolidate your debt you get smaller payments for a longer period
  15. how long were the Coyotes trying to move him? In the words of WC Fields, 'There's a sucker born every minute" However, they don't all get GM jobs in the NHL
  16. Man I hate it when I lose a half finished response that was the most eloquent prose ever typed so I'll try again Big stress under Torts Big stress under Green New coach relieved the Big Stress and had success now I am not comparing Coach B with Coach W, but I am comparing the situation that they walked into. and so, my question is: will Bruce be able, or better yet, is it fair to expect Bruce to coach this team at the same level, ( higher than he did the Ducks) next year and beyond Or, have we just experienced the Bruce Bubble?
  17. I actually think the NHL has taken the long route to getting it backwards they should have gone for a 3-1 points scheme 3 points for a win, 1 for a tie that would have given teams the incentive to play for a win 25 years ago the last 5 minutes of the game would be better than any 4v4-3v3 shootout that they have had since this began it would also increase the ability for teams to "Win" into the playoffs
  18. the situation was nearly identical and WIllie D had one good year then failed to replicate there is a cliche that goes something like : those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it
