  1. Today was a marathon of movie watching: Collateral - 7/10 About what I remembered. Also, probably the last good film Michael Mann ever did. The Company We Keep - 8/10 This film was not well received by critics, but I really enjoyed it. Not Robert Redford's greatest work, but it's always nice seeing him in a film and directing. Shia Labeouf was good, and I think a very underrated actor. All star cast in this one. Lots of well known, A Lister's in supporting roles. Pirates of the Caribbean (whatever the last one was called) - 4/10 Forgettable, but nice to have on in the background as we unpacked from camping. Lastly, just started watching John Carter. We'll see.
  2. The previews made it look like a big, steaming pile of crap. Emilia Clarke is a bad enough actress in small doses on GoT. Combine her AND Jai Courtney, one of the worst actors around today, and this movie was doomed from the start of production.
  3. The Drop - 8.5/10 Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace are absolutely terrific in this. Not used to seeing Rapace play a vulnerable character. As for Hardy, as solid as he always is. He plays, what appears to be a very simple and kind bartender for a mob run bar. Don't want to give much away, but it really is phenomenal. As always, Hardy continues to show why he's the most in demand actor in Hollywood as well. He plays yet another role that we have never seen him play before, and he nails it.
  4. Ex Machina - 7/10 Well written and well acted. All in all, I really enjoyed it. However, it was very predictable. Heard nothing about it going in, so the fact that I was able to figure out exactly what was going to happen and how it would play out was a little disappointing. Now, that doesn't make for a bad movie. As I said, I really enjoyed it.
  5. Reggie Watts almost makes me want to see it. But not enough.
  6. Few things. 1. The Fly is a terrific song. I mean, Achtung Baby is a great album in general, but The Fly is really, really good. 2. No Line On The Horizon. The title song is really good, but Magnificent is strong. To me, the best song on the album by a mile. Unknown Caller is also really good, as you mentioned. I find Stand Up Comedy is also really solid, except the title of it is really unfortunate. The title of a song doesn't matter if the quality is there, but it is improperly titled. 3. I really, really like their new album. Only started listening to it a week ago. But to me, Raised by Wolves might just be their best song in a long, long, LONG time.
  7. After about a 15-17 year hiatus, I've started listening to U2 again. Been nice coming back to them after all these years. Got really sick of them throughout university from 2000-2004, because I couldn't walk down the halls in dorm without hearing them and Coldplay every other room I'd pass by. But really been enjoying their stuff now. Except "Get On Your Boots", which is terrible.
  8. Interested to know why it's not either 7.5 or 7.7?
  9. Martha Marcy May Marlene - 7.5/10 Heard great things about it, and it did not disappoint. One of the best dramas in the last 5 years. Elizabeth Olsen, who is on a tear recently, knocked it out of the park as a woman who escapes from a cult and stays with her sister and her husband, trying to get over the awfulness of what she has witnessed. Movie is a combination of present day and flashbacks to what she went through. Truly fantastic. EDIT: Not suitable for kids.
  10. Didn't Michael Mann direct it? I heard it was awful.
  11. They Came Together - Loved it Really tough to actually give this a rating out of 10. If you like Wet Hot American Summer, then you'll also enjoy They Came Together. Also, Michael Shannon!
  12. Jupiter Ascending 30 minutes into this "movie". No joke, this just may be the worst thing I have ever seen.
  13. The Lone Ranger - First hour and 50 minutes - 0/10 Last 35 minutes - 8/10
  14. What We Do In The Shadows - 8/10 Big fan of mockumentaries and Flight of the Conchords, so this was a lot of fun. A little more graphic than I expected, but those scenes were all followed up with an awkward moment afterwards, downright hilarious. It was also about 80 minutes long, which served the movie fine. All in all, worth watching, but also quite graphic. Perhaps I'm getting squeamish in my old age.
  15. But it was sooooooo Fast and even more Furious!@!@#!@!@!@!!@!!
  16. And that's precisely it. The Canucks need bigger bodies right now and the future. Some players are better suited to specific lineups. We've seen this time and time again. A guy plays really well on one team and system. He then gets traded and loses it because he's not in a position to succeed. Ehlers, while he would have done well in Vancouver, would have entered a team that doesn't throw their weight around currently and gets outhit constantly. If both of them hit their projected ceilings, Ehlers will get more points, but Virtanen will be able to play a more physical game; something the Canucks will desperately need. The Jets don't have a guy like Ehlers in their lineup right now. Ladd, Wheeler, Lowry, Trouba, Buff (if kept), Stafford (Jets trying to re-sign him), even Scheifele this year, and Thorburn all throw their bodies around and play hard. Perfect for Ehlers to succeed. But had the Canucks chosen him, he would have found it very difficult to succeed and be protected. Both Vancouver and the Jets got the players they needed.
  17. Why are you getting so worked up? Take it down a notch. And to answer your question, Ehlers was never meant to play in the playoffs. The specific reason he was called into the building was to be around the guys and in the building during a playoff environment. That's all it was. Nothing more.
  18. Can I not be a fan of both? Especially with the Canucks being my second favourite team (behind the Isles)? You do know it's possible for hockey fans to just enjoy hockey as a whole and actually take an unbiased approach at viewing the teams they like, right?
  19. Right, the problem was that the Jets did not have enough roster spots available to include him, just like Petan and Morrissey. The understanding is that Petan will slot in on the third line, being protected by Adam Lowry, and Ehlers will start out on the second line. Frolik and Tlusty aren't returning, so that leaves open spots on the wing. As for Morrissey, he's likely to have one year with the Moose. Unless they sort out the Byfuglien scenario prior to the start of the season, then he'll start the season with the Jets.
  20. Obviously we disagree, and that's ok. I follow the Jets very closely and know that they are not re-signing Frolik, in large part because of this reason particularly. Ehlers is also too good to go back and play in the QMJHL next season. The Jets have a big team and Ehlers will be well protected and given plenty of room. Anyway, glad Virtanen has been picking it up as of late. Never been a fan of his nor what appeared at the time to be Benning selecting Virtanen in large part because he's a local kid. Those were the optics of it anyway. But happy he's been playing better.
  21. Nikolaj Ehlers. The guy likely to take Frolik's spot on the second line next season, playing alongside Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler.
  22. I enjoyed Mad Max, but obviously not nearly as much as others on here. That said, a movie just about this guy would be amazing.
  23. I enjoyed Godzilla. Think I gave it a 6.5 or something similar. Dumb fun.
