  1. The Canucks could finish and 11th seed and still win first overall, but if they are 12th seed, the best they can do is second.
  2. Bingo. Your comment shows an understanding of the fact that draft picks are marketable assets, and marketable assets are used in acquiring different and hopefully better players. Dare we call it "weaponizing draft picks"?
  3. This tweet deserves a much wider audience. Brilliant observation.
  4. By my count, Quinn used the f-bomb, or adjectival variations, 20 times in about 43 seconds. Impressive. I'm not sure I can stay that mad for that long.
  5. Probably not. Take a look at the available UFA right shot defencemen. Best guys are too old or way too expensive. https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/free-agents/2024/salary/all/defense/ufa/desc/right?stats-season=2023 I think improvement will have to come via free agent signings or trades.
  6. Sixty years ago today my dad took me to my first ever hockey game, a Western League game between the Vancouver Canucks and the Calgary Stampeders. The Canucks won 3-1 in the old PNE Forum, which was an ancient, rat-infested building even then. Vancouver's goalie was a 20 year-old named Gilles Villemure, who played all 70 games without a mask. I don't think they even had a backup goalie on the roster. The big scorer was 5'7", 150 pound winger named Buddy Boone. Boone was one of about five guys in the whole league who had mastered this new thing called a slapshot. Old school coaches were not at all receptive to slapshots. I was thrilled to see my first ever live game and it has remained one of my fondest memories. I lost my dad just over a year ago and wish he was here to remember that first game we spent together.

bathgate and popein, both lived in our old neighbourhood mudge. do you remember the old blue bird motel? they stayed there until they went up to the rangers. there was a small rink in the form at one end of the building. we use to put in a dollar each in and another community would do the same and we'ld play hockey. the old forum had a lot of posts that would block sight to parts of the ice.

apparently connie madigan is still alive. use to hate him.

Yes, I remember the Bluebird Motel, and I remember watching Andy Bathgate in pre-game warmups in the old Forum. He could pick a top corner form anywhere inside the blue line with a wrist shot. I couldn't believe that one of the best NHL players of his generation would end up playing for Vancouver. I was a big fan of Phil Maloney and Billy McNeill. I still have programs from that era with autographs of various players.

i always wondered what ever happened to billy dea?

he went up to the rangers, played a couple of games and then nothing. bathgate and popein played baseball at collingwood park. the tennis courts are gone now and the row of big trees that ran along on side of the courts. if they ever wrote a history of that park, they would have to write one chapter about us tom's boys, after tommy mah. that's my whole youth.

  7. Agreed. Toronto lost. Edmonton lost. Now if only Minnesota can complete my perfect circle of happiness.
  8. I may have mentioned this before, but you could do worse than signing Troy Stecher as a FA. If Calgary misses the playoffs, I'd expect Treliving to be fired, and the new guy would probably clean house.

the only trouble there mudge, is that we already have a lot of third pair guys. imo, bear is the perfect 3rd pair rd. he will probably be played higher in the line-up out of necessity. we really need a 2nd pairing, left and right d-men. i was hoping for pettersson to play 2nd pair ld. looks like hughes and hronek will be our top pairing. after that we are still in JB country.

  9. So you don't know who the faceless, nameless Michael Heisley was, do you?
  10. Exactly how would a new owner create a contending team? Be specific. What does a new owner know that the current owners don't? More to the point, how do YOU know what the new owner would know? Final question: Ever heard of Michael Heisley?
  11. Okay, but which of those statements is untrue? None, as far as I can see. Simply put, if there was a deal to be made, it would have been made. There wasn't, so there wasn't.
  12. Getting really sick of all the media talking heads falling all over each other criticizing EVERYTHING the Canucks are doing. Give us a trade! We hate the trade! Management is stupid! They are doing everything exactly the wrong way! They should be doing this! They should be doing that! We are way smarter than the guys who have been doing this all their adult lives! We want the team to keep losing so they can get more draft picks! We want the team to win so free agents will want to come here! All I know is that the next time ANY of them say anything positive, it will be the first time.

Completely agree with your post Mudge. I watched Donnie and Dhali today with Drance on it .  It was awful, Thomas Drance was yelling into the camera and the whole thing was so negative it was ugly. What a waste of time watching these guys.  Enough. Gonna go for a workout and tune those losers out.

  13. Excellent proposal. Now, this is the kind of detail I expect from everybody who whines that the team needs to be gutted and blown up and torn apart, but who also do not offer anything constructive. I might swap out Wolanin for Brisebois and bring in Johansson in place of Schenn, although I totally get why you'd want Schenn back.
  14. Edmonton las lost to LA twice this season by scores of 3-1 (Nov 16) and 6-3 (Jan 9). They play home and home Mar 30 and Apr 5 and both teams will want the four points.
  15. Interesting microstat I found: Timo Meier has 316 points in 425 games for a point-per-game average of .70. Brock Boeser has 294 points in 375 games for a PPG average of .78. Suggests to me that for the right customer, Boeser has real value.
  16. CDC Guide to Reacting to a Trade 1. Thank God we made a trade. 2. Who did we get? 3. Is that all? 4. We were idiots to give up a draft pick? 5. That draft pick will turn out to be a journeyman fourth liner who would look good in a Canucks jersey. 6. The new guy has great scouting reports. 7 Fans of his former team think he's a bust. 8. Yeah, he'll probably fail and again it will show how stupid Benning was. Lather, rinse, repeat.
  17. Easy enough. Go to https://www.hockey-reference.com/ Enter Elias Petterson. Click on the box that says game logs. Select 2022-2023 season. You will see his game by game stats this season. You can check for yourself if your theory holds any water. You can do that for other seasons, too.
  18. Partially true. They didn't get a long term deal done, but I thought that was Petey and his agent taking a short term deal in a cap-strapped world so that they could hit a home run when the cap goes up and Vancouver can afford an 11 or 12 million dollar player. Quinn, who has the same agent, was more willing to take the money on the table and probably left some there. Different strokes for different folks.
  19. YOU feel old? Back in the mid-70's decent seats in the high blues cost $8.00. I could have had a season's ticket for $8.00 times 41 games equals $328. One 2023 home blue Orca jersey with name and number costs $333.76, tax included. Times change, times change.
  20. I have no outside concrete evidence, but in my job I was in a position similar to that of a coach; responsible for building a team that was willing to work together and compromise when necessary for the good of the team. I always felt that the first year was spent learning and beginning to chip away at old habits, the second year was spent implementing clearer and more precise expectations for everybody, and in the third year, it was my team and everybody had sipped the Kool-Aid of selfless devotion to the goals of the team. Put another way: Year 1: Sow the seeds of change, Year 2: Accelerate the change and purge bad habits, Year 3: Consolidate and move forward with a clear vision and a shared commitment. Which is a long-winded way of saying that the new regime has been in place just over a year, and certainly have sown the seeds of change. I would predict that Year 2 will see dramatic and team-altering change. By the middle of year 3, they should be a contending team. It can be done, but massive change takes time and the cool-headed patience is necessary.
  21. He will be an unrestricted free agent. There is no qualifying offer for UFA's.
