According to capfriendly.com, the Canucks have 44 out of 50 contract spots filled as of now between the parent Nux and Abbotsford. Not sure if this is before or after Kalynuk trade. So it looks like the Canucks have 6 contract spots available now for the remaining 2022-2023 season to accommodate either NCAA players or free agents — unless Canucks don’t re-sign UFAs, give qualifying offers to RFAs or do buy-outs of someone like OEL during the off-season. Michael Ferland should be off the books for the 2023-2024 season too.

If another team offered more than the 3rd that the Leafs were offering, then Allvin would have likely accepted. If none of the other rumoured 5 or 6 teams in the running for Schenn was serious about upping the ante and gave a better offer than Toronto's third, then that ought to tell us something about what was his worth on the market. The worth on the market (assuming things are competitive) is what the market will bear. It's not as if the Canucks didn't shop around. I wonder if Luke also said that if you trade me to a serious contender for the playoffs (not just a borderline playoff team), then I've give you some consideration for re-signing in the off-season.

What stood out for me with the press conference was that Rutherford talked about doing a Retool rather than Rebuild, and then in the interview also talked about the fact that the team needed Major surgery, not just Minor surgery. Somewhere there is a disconnect in Jim's pretzel logic thinking - how can you reconcile Major surgery with just a Retool? Surely a Rebuild is the only plan going forward which is consistent with the concept of Major surgery?

However, the reality is that if we predict that 93pts or so is needed to ensure a playoff birth this year, then Nux will need to get 70 pts more out of a max of 114 avail (57 games) for a Pts% (points percentage) of 61.4%. That is a big ask (especially for Spencer Martin for a few weeks) and will require a big commitment from all players to really cut down on goals against and playing with more structure. Barring a couple of good trades to solidify the D corps and improve PK, I don't see this happening -- much as I'd like to see it.

There's way too many people in the twittersphere passing judgement prematurely. Personally, I don't know anything about the personal facts, case circumstances, and character of any of the family people on either side of this unfortunate situation - and this is probably true for many CDC members too. It's probably best to let the British Columbia legal "due process" take its course with judges in the courts before anybody jumps to any conclusion one way or the other about the integrity or character of people in the family. It's too premature and prejudiced until such time that all evidence is heard on both sides and the veracity of the claims on both sides can be evaluated. Also worth noting is that in the eyes of the law, people are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Trial in the court of public opinion in the social media is not the way forward here. Allow things to proceed before we jump to conclusions. Having said that, this case is an obvious serious concern.

Jyrki Lumme of the Canucks was a master of the aerial pass for getting the puck out of trouble in his own zone when the wingers were covered or weren't open. A good strategy with players like Pavel Bure and the Courtnalls.

People keep blaming Travis Green for our inept power play. But I don't think Travis Green is responsible for the lack of imagination on our static power play system. Our problems previously started with Newell Brown’s predictable unimaginative system in the last few years and have continued on with Jason King running the power play this season. Peterson and Boeser are having trouble getting shooting lanes on the power play because the opponents know exactly where they are trying to set up.

For a better example of more variety in a power play scheme with more flexible options, all one has to do is look at the imaginative set play at 6:58 of the 1st period of the Canucks-Philly game on Oct 28th. Philly assistant coach Michel Therrien put together a set play where Giroux deliberately fires the puck from the half boards off the lively boards behind the net to Sean Couturier who in turn relays a cross goal pass to a wide-open van Riemsdyk for the back door play. We never seem to get a variety of power plays options and looks - it is all too predictable. The Canucks are an easy study for opponent video scouts. By the way, I think that our defensive play has been okay with Brad Shaw working with the team. Our goals against (with great work by Demko) has been okay, but if we get no PP offensive production, we are going to continue losing games to teams with better special teams.

It's really good to see Brock back playing tonight. He'll be playing against his old University of North Dakota line-mate and buddy Drake Caggiula tonight on the Sabres. Drake was MVP at the Frozen Four tournament in their final year at UND. But Drake hasn't really done much at Chicago, Arizona, and Buffalo since his first couple of years in Edmonton. Maybe injuries including concussion problems have hamstringed his development as a couple of seasons were shortened.

We will have to see the practice lines for today I think as it is not clear at this point whether Dowling or Chiasson slots into the line-up tonight. I assume that Dowling might be the option on the 3rd or 4th line now that Boeser is available for the PP.

I'm 65, and I remember seeing Andre Boudrias, Don Lever, Wayne Maki, Dennis Kearns, and Don Lever in the first few years. Great memories of Dunc Wilson, George Gardner in goal. My comment was based on Brendan Batchelor's practice lines today where Lammikko had not yet arrived. I know that Lammikko is on the posted opening lineup, which means either Chiasson will be released or else (if he is signed) then someone else will be demoted / put on waivers.

What happens if Chiasson is signed (if the practice lines are any indication) when Lammikko arrives. Someone has to get sent down.

Bailey already cleared waivers and has reported to the Abbotsford Canucks. So your 4th line RW option with the 2nd scenario (Boeser on IR) needs to be fixed. With Petan, Dowling, and MacEwen still on the roster, my bet is that Zach MacEwen would be the designated RW. If Chiasson is signed on Tuesday Oct 12th sometime before the first game, then at least one forward would have to be put on waivers for sending to Abbotsford Canucks AHL team (perhaps either Petan or Dowling) to keep us to compliant to the 23-man roster limit (usually teams carry 13 FW, 8D and 2G). I think that is what Jim Benning meant by carving out a spot for Chiasson if he is signed. On the other hand, if Chiasson is released then one of the other forwards who can play both sides would likely switch to 3rd line RW and Zack will be RW on the 4th line. And there would be no need to put anyone on waivers. I think Juulsen needs some time in Abby to prove (a) he is over his multiple concussion issues and (b) to show that he is ready for NHL again. So don't expect Juulsen as a prospect will be ready anytime in the short term for the big club. This doesn't means that he won't have potential down the road.

this. A first round pick is no guarantee of NHL success. There are lots of GMs who have draft busts. Imagine being the Ottawa Senators GM Randy Sexton who picked Alexandre Daigle first overall, the next "guaranteed superstar" according to the press. I do think that OJ's injuries (which JB couldn't have predicted) have also hurt his career upside. But if a GM's overall success rate with picks beats the odds most of the time, then I wouldn't label him a poor drafter.

He hasn't got any PK experience with Utica at the pro AHL level, and also has not yet developed the flexibility to play the RW side as well as LW. These attributes (or lack thereof) were probably the deciding factor. However, with his improved skating stride, fitness level, and the opportunity to get some time on the PK time at Abby, maybe he can fill these gaps in his skill set and get another opportunity to play up with the Canucks in the show - next time on a 4th line role (rather than being only a top 9 option).

How about Daniel Sedin's overtime winner in the Sedin's final career game against Arizona? Didn't see this goal on the list. The goal brought the fans out of their seats. And although this was not a critical playoff goal, it was a very emotional last farewell game for the Sedins.
