Rose-colored glasses for all but Virtanen. Why though?
-
I know it's a job of some posters to keep on Nylander's jock, but all you have to do is look at the guy during an important game. Nylander still has a LONG way to go defensively. He's a virtual non-factor in that regard, while Virtanen has made great strides. Nylander still falls down a lot from minor checking. The smaller ice isn't much of a factor if he stays in open areas, this is part of what makes him a power play specialist imho. Overall, I don't see a reason why we should've selected him as opposed to Virtanen. You see, we already have the Sedins. Nylander is pretty similar to how they played when younger. Slightly faster, but similar. And don't forget Bärtschi, who has a similar top-6 potential if he pans out. It's interesting reading sometimes that we should've been concerned about replacing the Sedins' offense, but later on you'd read that we're essentially not able to replace them until they are gone. Also, a lot of these people are convinced that Benning's plan is sound, however when it comes to Virtanen, his most important move to date, he effed up. But don't worry, his plan is still sound. Congnitive dissonance? Or just straight up falsehoods in regards to Virtanen. Ever since we've drafted him there has been nothing but ongoing misinformation spread about him from these sources, and it's a bloody disgrace. But enough of that neverending pile of bs. Frankly, I think the Canucks are well beyond the state in which Nylander OR Virtanen are solve-alls. We're going to need more if we ultimately want to win. If TO magically gets the star they need from Nylander, good for them. Same with the Jets and Ehlers. Considering Fraudreau's rise to prominence in short order here, nothing in that regard would shock me in the least. If Benning plan is indeed sound, then all we can do is wait.

At this point i'm questioning Demko more than Virtanen, sorry. That goes for all other prospects mentioned.
-
For every question about Virtanen, there are many, many more questions about every other prospect in our cupboard. McCann. Is he strong enough for NHL duty? What's his peak if he does gain this strength? I see a 2C. Isn't he currently hurting? Demko. The hip surgery is concerning for a goaltender. That only increases his bust potential. Cole Cassels. The love the kid, but what's his upside? 3C? Typically bigger guys are there, but Andrew Shaw isn't huge. When's he NHL ready? CDC seems to think now, but is that actual? Isn't he rehabbing an injury? Shinkaruk. How long will he stew in the AHL? Don't hear much about top-6 duty for him on the Canucks, while Bärtschi gets a free spot? Is his speed and strength improving for NHL duty? Shouldn't we have drafted Theodore? Boeser. How long is he committed to college? He seems to think he's a power forward, but is he really? And shouldn't we have addressed our defense instead? Brisebois. Has bust written all over him. I mean the upside might be the last NHLer Brisebois, and Montreal couldn't wait to be rid of him. Shouldn't we have kept Lack instead? Zhukenov. Currently looks like a 12yr old, so how long until he's a man, let lone NHL-ready? Tryramkin. Is he ever going to come over from Russia? If when that happens is he anything more than a depth/AHL guy? He's a 3rd-pairing guy in Russia, is he not? Jordan Subban hasn't gained any noticable strength at all since we drafted him. Safe to say he won't become an NHL defenseman? If he still does, just how much sheltering will he need? Or is he actually a forward? Gaunce. Is he a winger now? Would've been better if he was a center. How's his foot-speed? His overall skill? Don't forget his 'hockey iq'. Hutton. What's up with him? He was supposed to be the best d-man we had, but he might not even be a defenseman. More like a converted forward. Is he just another failed experiment? Jensen. It was time for him to make the NHL last season, but instead the Canucks seem ready to give up on him. Why? Grenier. NHL time for him now? Or more AHL? Clock is ticking. Labate. Will he turn into anything? Corrado. Is he an legit NHLer yet? McNally. Why couldn't we hold onto him? Could you imagine if SJ turns him into a player? Yikes! Why is the holy frack did we draft Schroeder? Idiots bust alarms malfunctioning? You see, with all of these questions yet to be answered, I don't know why transforming Virtanen into Nylander or Ehlers would change much. Both those players have questions of their own. Is Nylander anything more than a playmaking power play specialist? He seems to be a ghost without the puck and only so-so with it. Certainly there's no Forsberg there. Is Ehlers going to be able to score like he did in the Q against NHL competion? Will he continue to dive a lot and become hated by NHL refs? We've seen a lot of undersized kids fail over the years, but then again Johnny Fraudreau is an all-star, so maybe the NHL will pave the way his success.

"I'd expect more from a 6th overall." This never made any sense to me. But maybe it's just indicating the quality of the draft. Reinhart was 2nd overall. I expected him to stick in the NHL last season. Draisaitl was 3rd overall. He couldn't even stick in Edmonton's lineup. Sam Bennett did nothing until the playoffs. Typical well-rested flash. He plays all season and he plainly doesn't have the same impact in the playoffs. And Dal Colle? People aren't too happy with him either. So what exactly should we have expected from a 6th overall in the 2014 draft? Compared to all these players above him, he's doing quite well. That being said, a lot of people look at stats and nothing else.
-
There's nothing in here that discounts my original statement about where the team and those players will be in the future. The only thing that changes it is if Virtanen succeeds and becomes an impact player right away.
-
All those players will be out of the NHL by the time this team is ready to compete for a cup again, so why is this a concern now? It isn't.
-
I'm looking forward to it.

Checks calendar. It's July 13th.

"Here we go again..." panic

You worry too much imho.

Hey, with any luck the 3rd rounder pans out, but it's going to take years and years. There were plenty of 2nd rounders that would have not taken that long though, so passing on them at this stage our defense is in would be idiotic. But that's just my opinion. Anyway, enough arguing about the 'what if we had a 2nd rounder' perspective. We didn't have one. It was silly to even mention the missing 2nd round pick at the summit in the first place. When you trade an overrated 'fan favorite' like Lack, then you should just tell the insane fans are overrating him and be done with it. As an insane fan, that would be welcome from management to say.

Oh dear. No. But even if that were true there are all sorts of questions, weaknesses and risks to him that will see him require much, much more development time than the concensus 2nd rounders, and then his upside is limited. Again, long-shot at best. That's why he's a 3rd and even then that might be high. If this was our allowed 2nd round pick, then no wonder Benning was okay trading the pick. I wouldn't harp on this so much, but when I heard that Brisebois was going to be our 2nd round pick, an intense distrust built quickly. This is based on our history with turning 2nd rounders into dust while passing on better prospects or merely trading the pick. I know what was said about Brisebois was designed to raise the value of Lack's return, but just don't say it. It's too much. It's a joke. And it's painful. Luckily there will be other opportunities to finally address the defense. Maybe Brisebois can come into play when this team is good again.

Pfft, I don't even trust published ISS ratings now. There's nothing in his game that tells me that he was a 2nd rounder in the 2015 draft. The risk is to high and the reward too low for that ranking. So what this tells me is that the Canucks still have problems in this regard, or they're just trying to upsell the pick. Given the history with the latter regarding Rodin, pardon me if I draw the hasty conclusion this upsell job is a practical death sentence for Brisebois's NHL potential. This, while we desperately needed to upgrade our defense.

If everyone is pencilling in their 2nd lines, then of course he's worthy of a one-way deal. Right?
-
Either this is a lie in order to upsell Brisebois, a long-shot at best, or he is incredibad at looking at draft choices, but considering we traded a valueable 2nd rounder for Bärtchsi, I think there's more to this than either prior option.

At least with Virtanen Benning proved that he can select the right player. But I'm wondering if that is allowed to happen again.
-
Some idiot on the radio said that this kid was going to be who the Canucks picked up in round two if they had that pick, and I wanted to slap him through the radio. Where did he get this tidbit? The Canucks? If that's honestly the case, then the Canucks should fire who makes their picklists immediately. The thing is we've constantly been hearing this bs upsell job for years and years. "Anton Rodin (feather-duster) was going to be who we picked in round one, but Jordan Schroeder (Oompa-Loompa) was available." LOL! Frack me. It's enough to drive you insane!

Poorly. It's one of those movies that makes a big deal about an obvious story, and 'works' only because people are tricked into thinking about it later. The final resolution though is that the movie was stupid, and you regret thinking about it as long as you did. It's like eating McDonald's, but being told that it's really a fantastic meal. Really? No.

Jurrasic World: 3/10 Didn't offer anything new. Military Dinomutant seemed silly. Acting awful. Wanted kids to die, sadly, the did not. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had more depth. Inside Out: 6/10 Dragged in parts, not the best pixar effort, but good. It played on the heartstrings well. American Sniper: 6/10 Decent war action, skippable personal story and rah-rah america bs. The guy was a legit psychopath. Avengers Ultron: 7/10 More of the same. Hulk/Black Widow story is stupid. Floating random city seemed like a dumb plan. Not dark enough. San Andreas: 6/10 Good disaster scenes and that's about it. Brought nothing 2012 didn't already bring. Predictable, lame ending. Mad Max Fury Road: 7/10 At least they got back to Road Warrior action. The lead actor stunk, which i found surprising, because he's been good before, but otherwise a good rendition. Home: 5/10 Just seemed like an excuse to play crap pop music while filling kids minds with lame crap. But watchable. Kingsman Secret Service: 6/10 Samuel Jackson's character was retarded. The kid was a goof. But the over-the-top fight scenes offered some moments. Chappie: 6/10 Pretty much south african Robocop meets Short Circuit. Shaun the Sheep: 3/10 Yawn to Sleep Jupiter Ascending: 5/10 Scenery good. Everything else not. Bad guy's voice annoying. Use a puffer. Strange Magic: 1/10 Do not watch. Blackhat: 4/10 I forget this movie entirely, but I know I watched it. Taken 3: 3/10 lol

I guess we had to trade Bieksa before he'd knock this guy the frack out.
-
I think Boeser was more off the board than advertised and the trade for Bärtschi was a mistake, but that's me. We're just going to have to wait and see on the Benning/Linden plan unfolding, if there is one.
-
Who is 'their guy' anyway? There was no concensus. I probably would have selected a defenseman as it's more a need, but trading the 2nd for Bärtschi ended that, looks like. Now we have plenty of the same player type. This may impact the future of the team in a negative way, but considering the amount of moving parts obviously coming up, it's hard to foresee. Anyway it looks like Benning's 'real plan' revolves around the 2016 off-season. The 2015 one has been all over the board. ps. I do not expect of year's-worth of bloggers ripping and whining about the Boeser pick as opposed to the Virtanen pick. This is a very safe prediction imho.
-
There's no cause for concern as of it, but you hear the same thing about all our drafts though. Always good until they aren't. I like the skill shown by some of the deep picks though. Maybe we got a Nylander-type without having to burn a 1st for it.

Reminds me of pre-concussion David Booth.
