  1. I don't think it'll be a late pick to unload Dickinson and/or Poolman. I'd be happy to be wrong, but I think it would cost you at least a 3rd round pick to move either one of them. How would bringing back another bad contract help move this team forward?
  2. What other way? Give up assets to move them? How much more reduced roles can guys like Dickinson and Poolman play? 5th line minutes and 4th pairing D? haha
  3. They're taking up space on the roster for players that can be more useful. For example, retaining $750k on Dickinson and signing Deslauriers for $1.75M means we're paying Deslauriers $2.5M vs Dickinson $2.65M... but Deslauriers is much more useful.
  4. Dickinson and Poolman are dead weight that costs $5.1M ...
  5. I'm not comparing him to Muzzin, but the so-called 'experts' are lol.
  6. I'll agree to disagree. I think showing you can do what you do for a number of years in succession means a lot more than one single year ... especially when it's a contract year. At $8M AAV, he'd be one of the highest paid defencemen in the entire NHL. Just an additional FYI, if you look up the numerous trade rumor articles around Severson, his comparison for value was Jake Muzzin.
  7. Umm... I'll respectfully disagree. Here are the stats for 3 of them. Who's who? Without me telling you who's who, or looking it up, tell me these all don't look really similar. Especially the first 2: Then there's this... Seth Jones...
  8. To me it sounds like length of the contract matters more than the dollars. He literally said "we see value in security". That sounds like 7 or 8 year deal to me. A $56M deal would be $7M AAV x 8 which would be fantastic.
  9. I don't think he's quite at Jones' level. Seth Jones' best year was 16 goals, 57 points in 78 games. Extrapolated to 82 games is basically a 60 point campaign. That's not far off from what Hughes did this year, but Jones has way more goals, is a RHD, and plays with a nasty edge with size to back it up. He's consistently a 40 to 50pt defenceman, and sometimes a bit more. Severson's best season is this current season with 11 goals and 46 points in 80 games. He has never cracked 40 points until this season. I used guys like Slavin, Morrissey, and Parayko as comparables.
  10. He's 26, not 36. To have a career ending injury at his age is sad. Maybe if Hunter Shinkaruk who played just as few NHL games as Morin and drafted after Morin in the 2013 draft was forced to end his hockey playing career because of injury may have been big enough news?
  11. Researching more on Severson, and I believe he should be the main target for the Canucks. Great advanced stats defensively, offensively capable, and good size. Won't come cheap at all. So here goes... TRADE #1 To NJD: Conor Garland Nils Hoglander Tucker Poolman ($600k retained) To VAN: Damon Severson From what I've read, the Devils want immediate help up front, but also help for the future. Garland provides that now, and Hoglander for the future. Poolman at only $1.9M AAV is good depth on the RHD for their up and coming LHD prospects. Losing Garland hurts for sure, but VAN gets a very good long term pairing for Hughes. TRADE #2 To CLB/DAL: Tyler Myers To VAN: 3rd Round Pick CLB lost Jones, DAL will lose Klingberg. Myers fills in nicely on either CLB or DAL. Now to the projections and other moves... Assuming the cap goes up by $1M per year for the next 3 years, then a very conservative $2M per year after that (after escrow taken care of in 2024-25)... RE-SIGNINGS $9.2M x 6 for Miller $7.25M x 8 for Horvat (Canuck for life!) $6.2M x 8 for Boeser $6.25M x 8 for Severson extension in a couple years $9.5M x 8 for Petey extension UFA SIGNINGS Sign Lyubushkin at $2.75M x 5 -- defensive defenceman for OEL to finally play offensively Sign Mikheyev or other Top 6 (Nichuskin?) for $4M-ish x 5 Sign Paul for $2.25M and Deslauriers for $1.75M (3 years each) Keeping the UFA signings to 5 years, so when Petey and Hughes hit their prime, there's flexibility on what we wanna do then. ADDITIONAL CAP DUMP Dickinson traded with $750k retention. Again, at $1.9M AAV, he will be moveable. Miller-Petey-Boeser (Lotto line reunited!) Mikheyev-Bo-Podkolzin Pearson-Paul-Deslauriers (GRIT) Highmore-Lamikko-Lockwood Chiasson Hughes-Severson OEL-Lyubushkin Dermott-Schenn Burroughs This is all assuming we have no prospects ever entering the roster lol. At some point, we'll have ELCs and young guys moving up. Thinking Karlsson, Klimovich, Rathbone, Woo, and others will come along. They will help fill in the bottom 6 and bottom defence pair (or 7th D). For example, I feel that Woo could eventually replace Lyubushkin. These deals allow the Canucks to be super competitive from now until the end of Petey and Hughes' peak years. When Petey and Hughes hit their absolute peak (29 and 28 years old in 2027-28), there is a TON of cap space to work with ($11.5M to $26M). Could make a major push then.
  12. Yeah I don't get why people can't simply remember "I" before "E", except after "C".... weird...
  13. You gotta think that the Lightning have got to be fatigued from back to back Cups... that's a lot of hockey in the past 2 years. Wouldn't surprise me to see Tampa lose against the Leafs.
  14. I'd go with a higher cap hit for Brock if it meant a long term deal under $7M AAV.
  15. Yeah if we can keep Miller under $9M, then I think we're good to go. Having that much talent locked up for such reasonable cap hits provides a lot more room to work with as guys like Dickinson, Poolman, etc come off the books either via trade or expiry of contracts.
  16. So what's the smart thing to do? Lock up the guy you expect to give you the best team friendly deal possible... that would be Bo Horvat in my opinion. It will set the standard moving forward. Lock up Horvat for $7.25M x 8. That's a solid $58M deal. Could even go as high as $60M for a $7.5M AAV. Then sign Brock on a 1-year deal to keep him in RFA status, and allow him to show management what he's got. Should come in at $6M to $6.5M. Now you have: Hughes: 7.85M Bo: 7.5M Petey: 7.35M Brock: 6.5M Demko: 5M Garland: 4.95M It sets a very nice internal cap structure moving forward. Just don't blow it all up with a crazy Miller contract.
  17. If it's $5.5M AAV, Brock will definitely out perform overall on that contract. He's not even in his prime yet, and his mind is clearly not 100% here right now (can't blame the guy at all).
  18. Yeah after seeing that response by Brock in the interview, I'm certain there will be a moment in the near future when his game will round back into form. I can't imagine how hard it has been playing through all that. I hope we re-sign him to a reasonable short term deal as we know he is working through this.
  19. My Monday morning proposal lol Sounds like Pierre Luc Dubois may be available, and WPG needs help on defence: https://awinninghabit.com/2022/04/27/canadiens-pierre-luc-dubois/ I'm not one to trade Miller easily, but if it means PLD in a Canucks jersey and having Petey and PLD as the 1-2 punch for 8 years, I'm all in. TRADE #1 (3- Way) To WPG: Ivan Provorov Tucker Poolman ($600k retained) 2023 3rd Round Pick (PHI) To PHI: JT Miller Nate Schmidt To VAN: Pierre Luc Dubois 2022 2nd Round Pick (PHI) -- this is a high 2nd rounder WPG out: Pierre Luc Dubois, Nate Schmidt WPG in: Provorov, Poolman ($600k retained), 2023 3rd Round Pick (PHI) PHI out: Provorov, 2022 2nd Round Pick, 2023 3rd Round Pick PHI in: JT Miller, Schmidt VAN out: JT Miller, Poolman ($600k retained) VAN in: Pierre Luc Dubois, 2022 2nd Round Pick (PHI) WPG needs help on their blueline. They get a substantial defensive upgrade with Provorov, and someone they are familiar with in Poolman for a measly $1.9M AAV. PHI gets elite 1C JT Miller and a solid defenceman in Nate Schmidt. VAN gets a fantastic centre to provide that 1-2-3 punch down the middle for the next decade or so. Also acquire a 2nd round pick to fill out their draft this year. TRADE #2 To PIT: Conor Garland To VAN: John Marino Its gotta hurt to acquire a defenceman like Marino. Garland has cost certainty and is a Top 6 winger for PIT moving forward. TRADE #3 To CLB/DAL: Tyler Myers To VAN: 3rd Round Pick CLB lost Jones, DAL will lose Klingberg. Myers fills in nicely on either CLB or DAL. Overall, Canucks now have a 1st, 2nd, and two 3rds in this year's draft. Now to the projections and other moves... Assuming the cap goes up by $1M per year for the next 3 years, then a very conservative $2M per year after that (after escrow taken care of in 2024-25)... $7.875M x 8 for PLD (same deal as Suzuki in Montreal -- see article posted above) $7M x 8 for Horvat (Canuck for life!) $10M x 8 for Petey Sign Lyubushkin at $2.85M x 5 -- defensive defenceman for OEL to finally play offensively Sign Niederreiter or other Top 6 (Nichuskin?) for $5.5M-ish x 5 Keeping the UFA signings to 5 years, so when Petey and Hughes hit their prime, there's flexibility on what we wanna do then. Podkolzin-Petey-Boeser Hoglander-PLD-Niederreiter Pearson-Bo-Dickinson (would like to move Dickinson out if possible too, Chiasson could probably step in here) Highmore-Lamikko-Lockwood Chiasson Hughes-Marino OEL-Lyubushkin Dermott-Schenn Burroughs This is all assuming we have no prospects ever entering the roster lol. When Petey and Hughes hit their absolute peak (29 and 28 years old in 2027-28), there is a TON of cap space to work with ($14M to $18M). Could make a major push then.
  20. I'd do it. He's only 23. If he's putting up 60pts now, he's likely to hit PPG status as he matures a bit more. He plays a heavy game with speed. Basically paying for his potential.
  21. https://awinninghabit.com/2022/04/27/canadiens-pierre-luc-dubois/ Dubois is available as I suspected he would be I'd be willing to move out Miller if we were able to acquire Dubois. Maybe move out Miller for what Winnipeg wants...
  22. I think that 1.5 years makes a big enough difference when they get to their mid 30s that it impacts the length of a deal. It's the difference between say finishing up a contract at 36.5yo vs 38. That's pretty significant.
  23. If Boeser is willing to sign with a cap hit of $5.5m or less, you lock him up for 8 years. End of the day, he's a minimum 20 to 25 goal guy. At that low of a cap hit, he will likely meet or exceed his contract value throughout the contract length.
