I'm not actually disagreeing or agreeing with you, just trying to understand where you're coming from. Are you saying because guys like Sakic and Zubov were top offensive threats in their mid 30s compared to guys like Sedins, that the old guard was more talented? -
Looking 8 years into Miller's new contract - with numbers (of course)!
HKSR replied to HKSR's topic in Canucks Talk
Well, as you can see in my OP, I kept Brock cuz I like him... but if we HAVE to move someone, Brock is the guy I'd move if his contract is north of $6M+. The way I see it, if Nuke or Mikheyev can pot 15 goals a season, but bring speed to the lineup, while being somewhere between $3.5M to $5M, I see it as a good trade off. That $1.5 to $2M in cap space savings could mean a substantial difference elsewhere in the lineup (ie. 3rd line) that could help make up that 5 or 10 goal difference. Miller on the other hand brings WAY too much to try and replace everything. Look at him last night. When he wants, he can play a really sound and responsible 2-way game. -
Those gambling sites use math to determine odds. They don't take into account which teams simply 'want it' more at this time of year. For example, the Canucks have these games left: Senators - mathematically eliminated Wild - clinched Flames - clinched Kraken - mathematically eliminated Kings Oilers - will likely clinch by game 82 So what does this tell us? The Wild, Flames and Oilers don't have nearly as much to play for. The Senators and Kraken are playing out their season for nothing else but pride. Their fans probably want them to lose more to move up in the draft. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the Canucks want this badly right now. Hence the 6 game winning streak. They're not just winning, they are blasting their way through the opposition scoring over 5 goals a game and letting in under 2 goals a game in that stretch. The Kings are the only team the Canucks are truly battling with. That game should have a playoff atmosphere. All the other ones will have the hungrier team wearing blue, green, and white.

Has anybody even heard of any trade destinations for Boeser? I assume NJD would be in the mix... anybody else?

I don't have an issue moving Brock. Awesome person, and I like him a lot, but I wouldn't mind if we traded him for assets then signed someone like Nichuskin or Mikheyev. Wingers are just so much easier to replace. -

Yeah, wasn't sure the standard after Halak lol... but you're right, it's probably more in the $1M to $1.5M range. That's another $500k to $1M of space to work with. -
Right now, the player on LTIR's cap hit is still counted against the team. It basically eliminates the ability for the team to bank cap space unless they're under the cap WITH the guy on LTIR. If instead, a player goes on LTIR, the team can replace him with another player, but the cap hit of the player on LTIR doesn't impact the cap, but instead, the player replacing him does. So let's do an example: Upper cap limit is $80M Canucks have an overall cap hit of $78M Canucks player X is injured and goes to LTIR (he has a cap hit of $5M). Canucks cap space is now $7M ($80 - $78 + $5) Canucks can now replace injured Player X with Player Y HOWEVER, make it such that accrual of cap space is based on the total cap for the team that includes the greater of: 1. Cap hit of Player X that went on LTIR, or 2. Cap hit of Player Y And of course, make it so that the cap hit remains intact for the playoffs based on the roster that is iced. For example, if Player X doesn't come back until the playoffs, they can still keep Player X and Player Y, but they would need to decide who they want to ice for the game. In essence, having a player go on LTIR has no impact on cap space accrual, but it also means you can't exceed the upper cap limit come playoff time. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this would promote even more activity at the TDL.

Lyubushkin? Miller? Manson? or even a bit shorter term deals for guys like Sustr or Rutta. The way I see it is we need someone to pair with OEL more than Hughes (for the next 2 or 3 years anyways). Schenn is great for Hughes. Eventually he might be a liability, but being a stay-at-home defenceman that doesn't really need to do much other than clear the crease and protect Hughes? He has several years left in him. If we can find a solid defence-first RHD for OEL, we can probably unleash OEL to tap into that offence he has. Then we have Dermott solidifying the defensive zone with Myers to do some wandering and hopefully producing offence. It's a trickledown effect that can transform the back end on this team. Who knows, in 2 or 3 years, maybe Woo finally makes the big club and is that stay-at-home Top 4 RHD with snarl that we need for Hughes. I wouldn't take that potential off the table. From what I've heard of his development, he's coming along quite nicely. -
Then why not simply change the formula so players on LTIR don't affect the cap in the sense that the teams with players on LTIR can still bank cap space. The thing is, the playoffs needs some kind of a cap. As others have said, being able to dress a $100M lineup when the upper limit is supposed to be $81.5M is ridiculous.

Assuming the cap goes up by $1M per year for the next 3 years, then a very conservative $2M per year after that (after escrow taken care of in 2024-25)... $8.5M x 8 for Miller $5M AAV for a Top 4 RHD this coming UFA season $6.25M AAV for Boeser $7M AAV for Horvat $9M AAV for Petey and so on, and so on... you can figure out the rest... Trade Dickinson and Poolman. Sweetener or retain if we have to. It won't break the bank. Still need to add either 1 or 2 forwards each year to play bottom 6 -- Nick Paul anybody? Bottomline is that we can afford to give Miller his big pay day, upgrade our defence, upgrade our 3rd line, and remain competitive for years. If his contract becomes an anchor in year 6 to 8 of his deal, it'll be the only one cuz OEL's will be gone by then. So get the guy signed this off season! Let the debate begin! And... GO!

Trading Miller right now would be like trading Courtnall or Adams... 29 or 30 year old guys with a ton of heart, and skill to back it up. -

Yup, keep pushing forward. The last thing this team needs is to gut it by taking a guy like Miller out of the lineup and dressing room. It would piss off the guys on the roster to no end. Imagine how Petey, Bo, Demko, and others would feel if Miller was traded now after they've been playing .600+ hockey for months with the new coach. I really hope Dickinson keeps improving, not so that we keep him, but rather so we can trade him for something. Then move Poolman, and we can add a Top 4 quality RHD through UFA. The forward group does NOT need work. When healthy, the forwards are: Garland-Miller-Podkolzin Hoglander-Petey-Boeser Pearson-Bo-Chiasson Highmore-Lamikko-Lockwood That is very solid depth. Three 30 goal scoring centres... how much more depth do you need? -

Wait... how can they afford to lose a game? If VGK wins all their games, they have 97 points. If the Canucks only win 5 games, that gives them 96 points? -

That's pretty crazy to think that this current team is the 1st since 1996 to have three 30 goal scorers. I looked at the 1994 team and they only had 2. I firmly believe there's something special about this current team. I just really hope it doesn't get dismantled. Hopefully they find a way to make the playoffs, it'll be great for 2 reasons: 1. JT Miller will likely stay at a discount 2. Vintage Canuck will reveal his identity Both are key factors here. -

Don't forget Brad Richards! That guy was THE beast in the playoffs. No Cup without him, that's for sure. St Louis was pretty incredible when you think about it. Broke out in his late 20s, and continued to be a force well into his 30s, all being somewhere between 5'6" and 5'8" lol
