  1. It's all just speculation at this point. I believe GMJB had planned to re-sign Tanev and Toffoli, but covid blew up the plans and he had to figure out a Plan B on the fly. Given what he got back from dumping LE, Roussel, and Beagle, I assume the plan was to replace Tanev and Toffoli with OEL and Garland. Schmidt was just a consolation since the trade with ARZ didn't happen right away. Based on our organizational needs, Tanev would have been better to hang on to, but GMJB recognized he needed to get rid of the useless cap (LE and Co.), so was likely hoping to kill both birds with one stone (ie. cap dump while replacing both Tanev and Toffoli): Tanev >> OEL Toffoli << Garland PS - the organization felt they needed someone to shoulder the load with Demko to help in his development, so they went out and got a good veteran goaltender. I don't see anything wrong with that if it helped in any shape or form in producing the Demko we see today. Hell, it was probably Clarke that advised GMJB to do so... so if you wanna piss on anybody, go after Ian Clarke lol
  2. Schneider wouldn't be an any situation defender though if his offensive output never comes around. Why would he be a PP guy? Why would he be the guy you want on the ice when you're pushing for that game tying goal with 2.5 minutes left in a game? He could potentially top out to be Chris Tanev. Would you have traded Claude Giroux for Chris Tanev when both were in their prime?
  3. What ever happened to Forsberg the Great? He just disappeared??
  4. I'd say that's a bit high. Sundqvist provides more offensive output than Motte. I see Motte between $2M and $2.5M...
  5. It's the risk we take with either signing or not signing. Most trades for Miller involve prospects and picks. There's no guarantee that any of them will pan out to their projection. Say it is Schneider, Chytil, and a 1st. What if Schneider tops out as a 2nd pairing defensive defenceman? Chytil hasn't looked great, so could very well turn into nothing but a depth forward, and the odds of a late 1st becoming an impact player are really low. So we take a risk that we trade away one of the best centres in the entire NHL for a 2nd pairing defenceman as the centrepiece. What I'm saying is, there's just as good a chance that Miller is impactful into his mid-30s as there is the chance that the package in return has a significant impact on the Canucks future.
  6. If it's Boeser for Marino+Rodriguez, I'm in. I'd do it without blinking if it was Marino+Kapanen.
  7. You got that right JT. Make sure you sign a nice extension in the summer too, so we can all stop speculating
  8. Maybe, but the teams that capitalized on the pandemic were walking into it with cap space already available. It's not like they found cap space after learning that the cap was not gonna go up for several years in a row. Even to this day, those teams that are up against the cap are having an incredibly difficult time shedding cap. In fairness as well, Dickinson didn't look like he was gonna be as useless as he has been. I'm also of the mindset that Pearson's deal is very cap friendly. Poolman's deal was bad, I'll give you that. I don't OEL's contract is as terrible as people make it out to be. He stabilizes the back end. Plus taking him in meant Garland came along with him, which is a huge plus. If you can fault Benning for anything, it's in his and his team's evaluation of bottom 6 forwards and 3rd pairing defencemen lol
  9. For $762k AAV, he's a decent depth player and some muscle when needed.
  10. Given a month has passed since I first made this thread, I updated the original post with numbers that better reflect what is happening today. The new numbers look like this (can see it all in the OP): Re-signings JT Mller at $9M AAV Boeser at $6.35M AAV Bo at $6.9M AAV Petey at $9M AAV Motte at $2.5M AAV Hogs at $1.75M AAV (bridge) Podz at $3M AAV (bridge) Trades and Movement Dickinson traded this TDL Poolman traded in 2023-24 Lockwood, Rathbone, and Klimovich/Karlsson join the team UFA Signing in 2023-24 Top 4 RHD for $5M AAV Lines by 2023-24: Hoglander-Petey-Podz Pearson-Miller-Boeser Garland-Bo-Motte Highmore-Lamikko-Lockwood Hughes-Top4RHD OEL-Myers Rathbone-Schenn Demko Backup
  11. Thoughts on Miro Heiskanen? $8.45M for 8 years... he's on pace for just 46 points... I get he's good in other areas, but still.. it seems like a LOT for an all-purpose defenceman.
  12. You gotta wonder what our future would look like if we had Makar AND Hughes.... that'd be pretty wild.
  13. I think if JT goes to UFA, someone will offer him $9.5M x 7. In a normal world without covid and its lingering effect on escrow and the upper cap limit, JT would probably get a $10M+ AAV deal. So $9.5M x 7 = $66.5M makes sense in this covid flat cap world. The Canucks could probably lock him up for $8.5M x 8 = $68M. A bit more, but likely less overall due to taxes. However, he gains an extra year of stability (8 years vs 7 years with another team). I think everything is contingent on how the Canucks play next year. I believe JT will wait to see how this team performs moving forward. If they continue their 0.650+ hockey and finish near the top of the division, I could see JT wanting to stick around as it would clearly signal we are heading in the right direction. However, if they drop back down to 0.500 to 0.550 hockey, I say JT leaves for sure.
  14. I think you could say that the prospect of getting Fox is... ...Rindiculous...
  15. I just think a thread is deserved here in recognition of a class of elite young defencemen that have surfaced in this generation of hockey players. I'm talking about guys like Makar, Fox, our very own Hughes, and now Seider... Makar is incredible. I know we all had our debates between Hughes and Makar in their rookie year, but man, Makar has simply pulled away (with no disrespect to Hughes at all). Makar is on pace for over 30 goals and 99(!!) points! WOW... when was the last time a defenceman was on pace for nearly 100 points??? Even the great Erik Karlsson in his prime was only able to hit 82 points. Fox is incredible in his own right. On pace for over 80 points as well. Our very own Hughes on pace for nearly 70 points. Seider, the rookie on pace for nearly 60 points. Might be the most impressive one of them all if he continues to develop. Just amazing to be able to watch these elite level young defencemen go head-to-head for years to come. Makar will win the Norris this year. Fox won last time. Hopefully Hughes has his turn in the near future, but he's in tough against this competition.
  16. Well, I think this is just ridiculous... here's why: And that's all I have to say about that.
  17. The fact of the matter is that EVERY GM has faults and screws up. A lot of it comes down to timing and luck. Honestly, what if covid didn't happen and the cap went up the $6 or $7M it was supposed to when GMJB was trying to re-sign Tanev and Toffoli? Heck, GMJB traded for Toffoli literally a few weeks before the world shut down. I feel bad for him because he clearly had a plan in place, knowing full well that the cap had historically moved up significantly year after year. Unfortunately for him (and for us), covid is a thing, and it happened at an inopportune time.
  18. I would, but Miller wouldn't. It will cost at a minimum $8.5M x 8. Not even sure that will get it done. On the open market, he would get anywhere from $9M to $10M over 7 years. That's $63M to $70M in total. With Vancouver, he could sign for 8 years vs 7 years as a UFA, so Vancouver would need to offer $8M to $9M over 8 years to match the overall gross pay (ie. $64M to $72M range). Signing with Vancouver gives him 1 extra year of security.
  19. I really don't see Halak being moved. I'd be shocked if it happens. I'm surprised his % is so high.
  20. I think based on how things have progressed (Miller looks possessed these days... playing at almost a 2.0 PPG clip for awhile now) ... I'd want Schneider, Kakko, and a 1st for Miller and Schenn.
  21. If the rags keep winning though, do they feel that they need to make a big splash though? I'd think it only makes sense for them if they don't touch the guys that are currently playing. Enter Kravtsov, Lundkvist, 1st round pick, 2nd round pick, etc.
  22. I'm done with this. So are others. Moving on... <see above>
