  1. Local news in Japan just said to expect a 7+ magnitude earthquake to follow in the next 1-2 days.
  2. If you guys haven't already, tune into the live press conference. They are doing Q&A right now. http://cnic.jp/modules/news/article.php?storyid=1009
  3. Btw, do you have a link? I'm dying to find out what the comments are.
  4. Watching this now. It's very informative. They are providing english translation.
  5. Actually yes, it is pretty informative. I think he's basically speaking in 'Murican for people to understand.
  6. A general rule of thumb: When a person uses onomatopoeias to describe scientific analysis, it's not really someone who you should take advice from.
  7. Maybe the lowest common denominator.
  8. I just saw that. It never ends, huh?
  9. Thanks. We're doing a lot better now. Reminds you of what's really important in life. Like I said, we're lucky. Thankfully they were further in land and not directly impacted by the tsunami. We couldn't even count all the cracks, but most of the buildings are still standing. My prayers go to the families who weren't as lucky as we are.
  10. The TEPCO website is currently overwhelmed, so hard to get a schedule. But it's the best move right now since the places that need it most are hospitals and emergency shelters.
  11. I'd place my bet on the tsunami 9 times out of 10 The 1 time out of 10, the tsunami would lose all motivation to live and die before it hits the shore.
  12. It appears the rolling blackouts are in full effect. Here's an update from my family about 8 hours ago:
  13. Thank you for posting the link. So far it's been the most reliable and up-to-date source of news. They post micro-updates several times an hour. In case you missed it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12307698
  14. It's definitely serious, but it's not a full-scale meltdown. There was a partial meltdown in reactor 1, but as of yet the amount of radiation that has escaped into the environment is lower than originally expected. The attention is now on reactor 3, in which the water level has dropped which might indicate a leak in the vessel. It's essentially speculation at this point. Edit: By "not as serious" I am referring to the rampant speculation that a full-meltdown is underway. It's still deadly serious, but not in the manner that it's already out of control. Edit 2: This is by no means a chicken-little scenario, but the plutonium level in reactor 3 is greater than reactor 1. So it's even more critical to prevent any meltdown. However, there are far more people involved since the international community is now available to assist and evaluate the situation.
  15. I've said it before and I'll say it again. CNN, Fox News and other cable news networks are simply trying to get ratings by being sensationalist. "Possible" becomes "Probable" "May have" becomes "It has" "One guy says" becomes "Experts say" Remember who their target market is: Average American Joe Six-Pack. If the TV doesn't tell him the world might be ending, he'll go watch wrestling or shoot beer cans off his porch balcony.
  16. The gist of it is that the speculation has been a little exaggerated. It may not be as bad as people feared it might be, but it's still far from over.
  17. JMA and USGS have been in conflict with measurements since it began. Considering the location and the experience they have with seismic activity, I'm more inclined to accept their figures. JMA also historically under-estimates earthquakes. So when they raise it, it's fairly notable.
  18. I'm not terribly concerned with the volcanos. They erupt all the time in Japan. There was an eruption about 3 or 4 weeks ago and basically had zero coverage in NA.
  19. That is amazing. I hope they find his wife too, although just him surviving is nothing short of a miracle.
  20. I've got my passport and luggage ready, but the wife says to stay in Canada for a little while more because it's "not safe yet".

Are you going to book now or stay patient?

I told her I'd wait for a few days, but say the word and I'm on the next flight. My fear is if something happens with the reactors in the mean time, that flights will be grounded for weeks or months.

There was a partial meltdown with the nuclear reactors in Fukushima prefecture. The cooling systems are inoperable and they are forced to use sea water to keep the temperatures down. The control rods in reactor 1 are now in place, but reactor 3 is now having difficulty.

  21. Which would make sense if it happened in North America. This is the exact reason why all Doomsday predictions with a date and/or time are meaningless. The date/time is only relative to the locale.
  22. I advised them to be ready, but as of yet the warning level is very low. The primary concern isn't the reactor at all, but the fires and the aftershocks. There are a few firetrucks putting out fires locally still.
  23. Guys, this isn't chem-trails. Radiation is easily detectable. You can buy geiger counters. Even amateur chemists own them. During Chernobyl, Sweden was the first country to break the news, not the Soviet Union. How well did that cover up go? Cover-ups are futile and in the age of twitter and 24-hour cable news, word spreads fast. Relax with the conspiracy theories.
  24. His source is valid, but the spin he puts on everything is not. He's equating it to Chernobyl when it clearly says in the actual article what we've already known for almost 24 hours. The explosion occurred outside the containment vessel. The report from an hour ago cited it to now be under water. He always exaggerates and puts his own spin on things. He doesn't report news, he reports opinions on news.
