Goodbye Hong Kong. Nice knowing you....
6of1_halfdozenofother replied to Lancaster's topic in Off-Topic General
Now that the UK has stated that they view the ccp as not complying with the Joint Declaration, they should follow it up by trying to convince the rest of the G7 (and as many UN member states as possible) to nullify the "One China" policy. https://news.rthk.hk/rthk/en/component/k2/1580434-20210313.htm BTW, looks like it won't be long before I won't be quoting RTHK articles any more. The new lackey installed as their Chief has decided to wade in on editorial independence of programming (he's been cutting episodes of material that were ready to go but were deemed "indecent" or because he apparently didn't like the narrative), so it's only a matter of time before he starts shifting the spin on the RTHK news websites in favour of the government and the ccp. For a public broadcaster, they were fair in their provision of news and fearless in their willingness to expose truth to power. Unfortunately, as a government-funded institution and under attack by pro-establishment politicians and talking heads consistently and constantly for the longest time, they may finally have been dealt an incapacitating blow and are eventually likely to end up a government mouthpiece, just like the ccp mouthpieces cctv and xinhua to their north. -

I could tell you, but then I'd probably get another warning point and finally be served my walking papers from this site. -

There's a reason why the ccp's first stooge in HK, Tung Chee-hwa, is called "lo mung tung" (老懵董 - aka dotard Tung). The only way that this newly imposed LegCo is being "representative" is by representing the wishes of the elections committee's overlords, ie. the ccp. https://news.rthk.hk/rthk/en/component/k2/1580286-20210312.htm Go back to stumbling over inanimate objects and licking the boots of winnie the poo, you old clueless Tung. -

Line combinations when Pettersson returns?
6of1_halfdozenofother replied to Patel Bure's topic in Canucks Talk
This probably isn't going to be a popular opinion, but I think these two (Roussel and Sutter) are doing fine for what their roles are supposed to be. For another unpopular opinion, I would feel inclined to swap out Gaudette when Motte returns. Granted, Gaudette isn't horribad out there, but I don't think he's finishing up his chances (be it scoring, checking the attacking players, faceoffs, making solid passes, or attacking the offensive zone) consistently either. He also seems to show a bit of wear and tear, probably as a consequence of the condensed season. I would have normally inserted Virtanen here as the whipping boy, but he's actually playing a bit more solidly (a bit less soft), so perhaps when he needs a reminder to try to play to his potential, Coach Green can have him swap places with Gaudette in the bleachers to get the message across. -

So who do you swap out when Motte returns? -

An absence of logic - clearly there's no reasoning that exists in the hollows of their mind. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asia/hong-kong-electoral-reforms-prevent-dictatorship-of-the-majority-14349284 ...so, a democratically elected government that is representative of the electorate is somehow evil because it is a "dictatorship of the majority". -
NHL proposed changes to draft lottery
6of1_halfdozenofother replied to Mackcanuck's topic in General Hockey Discussion
I'm a big fan of locking all the GMs of lottery-eligible teams in a cage and letting the last-standing GM get the first overall pick, the last GM he beat getting the 2nd overall pick, and so-on and so-forth until all 15 or 16 spots are filled. Gotta make them work for it, you know. -
I'm not looking to engage in battle with you, but I thought it would be important to share a couple of consderations related to your 3rd and 4th sentences above: 1. Posting the link to an article (and in many cases, quoting the article in part or in full) allows for a basis of discussion. In many cases, people don't want to discuss something unless the text or the video or the sound clip being discussed is available for review, comparison, examination, and verification. In reference to the bolded part of an earlier post of yours copied below, it's not so much about credibility - I think most posters know that everything has a degree of bias to it - it's (again) more about providing a basis of discussion. 2. In relation to the point above, and with reference to your 3rd sentence: to not share the source of your point of discussion, put in a personal view, and then to expect people to accept it at face value for further discussion with no reference and no supporting material for a context to base the discussion on, to put it politely - that process is generally considered hearsay; to put it more bluntly, it's what people call gossip. I think you'll find (or perhaps you've already found) that most of the well-mannered (and even some of the more passionate) posters here prefer to engage facts and materials that they can refer back to, rather than hearsay. I have no bone to pick with you and I've always considered you one of the more decent posters, so I just thought I'd share my perspective of why the posting of links to verifiable articles/clips (misguided, off-base, or biased as they may be) is considered so important to members on this site.

Too many people to process so they'll have to continue tomorrow morning: https://news.rthk.hk/rthk/en/component/k2/1578204-20210302.htm More details over at HK Free Press: hongkongfp.com Pretty obvious the intent of the government prosecutors attempts to convince the courts from granting bail while the police spend the next three months trying to build their case is a political ploy. The question is: are they doing this because many of the charged are also pro-democracy district councillors who stand to lose their seat if they are unable to attend a certain number of meetings? Or are they doing this (as suggested in the HK Free Press article) to catch the "Two Sessions" up north, something lawyer and Civic Party chair Alan Leong (representing his fellow Civic Party members) mused about? By the way, pretty unfortunate that locally, Global News has an article on this, but CBC doesn't. https://globalnews.ca/news/7667976/hong-kong-47-protesters-detained/ -
Canucks Alumni - Where Are They Now?

I know where Todd Bertuzzi was most recently... -
Agreed. The use of the word gives legitimacy to the ccp's outrageous claims - probably the last thing anyone would want to do.

I'd be more concerned about Schmidt, Edler, and even Hughes' ability to keep the puck in the o-zone while they are manning the points, to be honest. Myers is doing fine for what he brings. I don't even mind the penalties, though I think he could stand to be a bit more rough around the edges so that rats from the other teams don't take liberties on our players.

To use an example, HKers are more like South Koreans while mainlanders are more like North Koreans. I think. Except for the really rich mainlanders, who want to slather their bodies with a mixture of the most expensive most trendy junk without pausing to look and discern whether or not what they're wearing makes fashion sense of any kind - just to try to demonstrate just how &^@#ing rich they are.

She competed for the Miss HK title - and won, if I recall correctly. Not sure whether or not she went for the Miss Chinese International - or if that competition even existed back then. Gave up her studies here to pursue her career in HK, but by all reports she self-identified as coming from Prince Rupert instead of Vancouver. That's why I asked if it was her (knowing your location and affinity to all things North Coast). EDIT: she didn't compete for Miss HK, but she did compete for Miss Chinese International, and won that one (her ticket to enter was by winning the Miss Chinese Vancouver competition). Source - wiki.

I'm actively practicing a form of that. I look at the place of manufacture origin and base my purchasing decision on that. If it's Canadian-made, I would probably be more inclined to buy it. If it's made in the prc, I put it back down. I'm ambivalent about "made in HK", because it could be truly a "yellow ribbon" enterprise, or it could be some prc/ccp shell company that flags it as "HK" to avoid the stigma. For a while, anything that I would have normally bought but found was made by our neighbour to the south would have normally elicited my desire to find a locally-made alternative. Now that Trump is no longer making policy there, I don't feel as compelled (but I still do try to find a local alternative, by force of habit perhaps). The trickiest part is finding electronics that aren't in part sourced from items manufactured in the prc.
