A leisurely x-Canada roadtrip while I still have the physical ability (and eyesight) to do so. 3 coasts here, not just two. Watching the house of cards called the "ccp" collapse on itself while I still have the mental capacity to appreciate it. Being able to participate in a free, fair, and open election of not just HK lawmakers, but also of the government of HK, which would mean I would need to attain Permanent Resident status there - not sure if I could survive 7 years there with minimal income and without getting arrested under the ccp-imposed nsl. I suspect the 2nd item (above) will need to happen first before this can come to pass. I know this thread was started as a hockey event pilgrimage thread, but at the moment my mind is filled with so much more than just hockey.

On a semi-related note, I remember reading an opinion piece that these major "sweeps" (actions involving arrests of prominent figures) usually happen when there's a court case where the police are on trial. Deflection, as it were; trying to control the narrative on what the media would report on, directing the sunlight away from their misdeeds. Turns out this was being tried while today's (yesterday's) sweeps were happening: https://news.rthk.hk/rthk/en/component/k2/1568892-20210106.htm What a &^@#ing joke these ccp lapdogs are. -

Yes, this was all part of the major sweep of pro-democracy participants in last year's primaries for LegCo. https://news.rthk.hk/rthk/en/component/k2/1568893-20210106.htm He also works for the firm that Albert Ho (former Democratic Party chair, also facing his own trial for the June 4th vigil that was banned by the HK gov't this past year) is a partner of. There was an opinion piece penned and published earlier this week by Benny Tai, one of the leaders of the 2014 Occupy Central movement. It's HK's Apple Daily, which has historically been vocally pro-democracy and a thorn in the gov't and ccp's side, so take it as you will. https://hk.appledaily.com/opinion/20210105/VA6X35ZKRJBHHB5KT5XLUZSU2A/ Edit - point being, if WtP can't get his $&!# together and make himself Caesar ad infinitum before his official term runs out in 2022, the dissenting voices in his party (few as they may seem) have a legitimate means to kick him off the throne. That might be why we're seeing all this aggression now, to try to create more "us vs them" situations for him to try to rally his support around him. -
I can't help but wonder if that family in Revelstoke willing to cover food and board for a covid+ person to get them all infected ended up getting what they were looking for...

Nobody is allowed to conduct participate in a large-scale survey - otherwise, they'll be charged with subversion. https://news.rthk.hk/rthk/en/component/k2/1568852-20210106.htm -
The current requirement is a test conducted 72 hours pre-flight. 72 hours is a considerably long time to try to avoid exposure in a location where you may be reliant on contact with service providers (such as housekeeping, meal delivery, accessing necessities, transport to the airport). There's also no guarantees you won't pick it up at the airport from the staff working for the airline or the airport, or other travellers not coming to Canada but having to clear security.
-
The pre-travel test means nothing, because it doesn't guarantee you won't pick it up between the time you take the test and when you disembark from the flight after landing on Canadian soil. If the government was truly serious about limiting spread, they would be testing all arrivals - and requiring sequestering and quarantine - at first point of arrival in Canada until negative post-arrival test result is confirmed. This would likely mean the need of a field hospital at the four airports receiving international flights. The land border would be more problematic, since transport trucks shouldn't be held up at the border. Perhaps a rapid test regime might be necessary there, as unreliable as the results may be.

The Effect of Covid 19 on Countries
6of1_halfdozenofother replied to stawns's topic in Off-Topic General
I'm not suggesting the students consider that - it's more for the background consideration. The infection rate/ICU rate/"testing positive" rate metrics aren't reliable and consistent across all jurisdictions, so in terms of the planning part, it might be something to steer the kids away from more than anything. -
The Effect of Covid 19 on Countries

One area to consider would be that the infrastructure to test - and in many cases, because of the state of infrastructure, the criteria to allow for testing - will affect the statistics being reported. Even in a developed country like Canada, there were different criteria at different stages and different criteria by the different health jurisdictions (province to province, and maybe even health authority to health authority within a province) for who would be allowed to be tested. BC has had a higher reliance on contact tracing, and had given initial priority to testing towards frontline health workers and to verify cases where most of the risk factors were already present (travel within certain timeframe, symptoms present, etc.), so at different times of the past 10 months, different parts of the statistics are not as reliable (or consistent). I would expect the same for other health jurisdictions and countries, given the different infrastructure lending to their ability to test (and thus driving who would fall into which of their testing priority classes). I guess where I'm getting at with that long-winded blurb is - unfortunately the stats can't be mapped across different jurisdictions as a reliable or consistent metric. -
Not entirely surprised, and I would also not be surprised if it was a faction within the ccp that did it to him. The ccp has prohibited the broadcast of certain topics, including time travel and things that may alter history (for example, hypothesizing a world without the ccp due to an action or an inaction as a result of - and resulting in - time-travel-induced changes). Taiwanese article, so take it as you will (but I personally think it gives a fair representation of the restrictions, as HK dramas touching upon these verboten topics attempting to crack the mainland market have faced the same bans): https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/3965416 The dude probably had in his pocket (or has loyal friends as) high-ranking members of the ccp - especially those who have strong influence within the party - to support his ongoing efforts, and so the only way to stop him would have been something like a covert operation that couldn't easily be traced back to other (influential) members of the ccp, including winnie the poo. The last link in the article (at the TW News website) also points to the ccp's attempts to control what gets published digitally behind the grate firewall (misspelling intentional).

Random thought: if they did separate, would we need to re-route all "Trans-Canada" infrastructure (railroads, highways, pipelines) around Alberta through the NWT?
-
Why not just call the cops on them? If you don't want them knowing it was you, then call in a "shots fired" to get the cops in the area, and then "accidentally on-purpose" draw attention to the mass gathering next door. I know it's a dick move, but they started it first with their provincially-banned social gathering.

Any word on the efficacy of the vaccine after the 2nd dose if taken with the additional 1-2 weeks delay?

What I'd really like to know is how they're planning on dealing with the whole Ireland issue. Maybe make the island a "Special Economic Zone" that will allow for EU-based trade rules overlaid onto the north?

Hard for most people not to have that sentiment, and that was even before the current Goof-in-Chief was installed. -

Perhaps, but fact of the matter is that even with ccp encroachment of those territories, the States won't have too much of their access curtailed, so if they are willing to bear the reduced access, then too bad for Taiwan (and whatever agreements they've signed) I guess. -

The same could be said for pretty much any western nation. Historically, the biggest reason why people have gone to war has been access of markets to conduct trade. I could see that being a reason why the States would go to war over HK and/or Taiwan - if they somehow feel that access to those markets (and the markets those areas serve, such as China) were irreversibly hindered. -

I actually wouldn't be surprised to hear that the Ontario teams will play out of Montreal's Bell Centre, while the Canuckleheads play out of the Moose barn in good ol' Winterpeg.
