  1. This “dead cap” thing is a bit of a fallacy. We were paying OEL regardless, thanks to Benning & Co. So what really matters is if we can find an equivalent-or-better defenseman for the difference in salary between the buyout hit and the original salary. If we can, and it’s significant enough, then it can be worth the hit in years 5-8. Seeing how terrible OEL was last year, it’s not a stretch to believe he’ll be easily replaceable (or better) in say, years 3 and 4 of the deal.
  2. There are rumors about other teams in cap trouble having to give away good players, even attaching sweeteners. (As we were with Garland and Boeser). Like Carlo or Grzelcyk from Boston. I look at Tampa, and have trouble knowing what they will do. They are essentially at the cap now, with 6 roster spots to fill and some big RFAs to sign. What can they do? Will they have to trade one if their newly signed core players like Cirelli, Sergachev, or Cernak? Almost everyone else with salary has a clause to work around. There’s a lot that could shake loose. And this buyout puts Vancouver in a position to take advantage of the situation, rather than being victims of it.
  3. Look at the myriad of tweets from legit sources. There is practically no cap hit for this season from the buyout.
  4. Yeah, but he was 30 then, and finally getting a fresh start on a new team. He turns 32 next month. What is more likely? That he recreates that modicum of success? Or that he is somewhere in-between decent and horrible?
  5. I'm in favor of this move, strongly. For one, $7M of cap space now is worth the $9-ish million of penalty in years 5-8. Flat cap now makes cap an absolute premium. If they use it wisely they could get something useful. And with the projected raises the penalty won't be hard to absorb later. Secondly, OEL was absolutely brutal last year. Not just "not worth salary" bad, but "made replacement AHL journeymen look amazing" bad. Barring a miraculous return to form, this is addition by subtraction. And third, whether you like it or not, the time is now for the Canucks to compete. They have a top-5 goalie and top-10 defenseman signed for under market value, and really good high end forwards in EP, Miller, Kuzmenko, etc. If this doesn't work, it's total teardown time, and years 4-8 of this but won't matter anyways.
  6. I’m wondering if, considering the circumstances, Bear might sign a cheap 1-year extension just for the security, access to team doctors and training staff, etc. Something like 1.25M?
  7. Yeah, Habs have young forwards with legitimate top-line skill or potential, in Suzuki, Caulfield, and Slaf. They do have a number of decent D prospects, but none of them have top-pairing potential…not even close. I could see them reaching for a defenseman this time. Even though reaching for a C in 2018 cost them the opportunity to draft Brady Tkachuk or Quinn Hughes.
  8. Carolina selects defenseman Dyllan Gill. @Relyt Krets
  9. Carolina selects center Kenny Connors. @theo5789
  10. Carolina Hurricanes select defenseman Nikita Yevseyev. @Intoewsables
  11. With pick #100 (missed), Carolina selects defenseman Ludvig Jansson. With pick #104, Carolina selects defenseman Filip Nordberg. @Sludge @lethunder
  12. I just meant that he seems to prefer being in the Metropolitan division. He's now been coach for 5/8 of them - may as well complete the whole collection!
  13. Islanders Hurricanes Flyers Predators Capitals Rangers ...If/when things don't work out in New York, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess his next gig will be in Pittsburgh, New Jersey, or Columbus.
  14. He's coming off of a 2-year, $1.25M per deal. And he had a 3-year, $3.125M before that (thanks to Treliving over-paying). So he's done well for himself. Last year is the first time in a while he's had a really good season. He might have got more elsewhere, but he seems to have found a good spot. And he's originally from Spokane, Washington, so being in the West probably is ideal for him. As a RH C with good underlying numbers, I was hoping Vancouver might snag him in free agency.
  15. They'd probably buy out Kuznetsov, but he has a $2M signing bonus each of the next 2 years, so the savings are reduced. They'd save $4M each of the next 2 years, but then have the $2M hit in the 3rd & 4th years. Mantha has no signing bonus. And the way his contact is structured gives extra savings. Just a $1.37M cap hit this year, and $2.17M hit the next. If no one is willing to take him at 50% retained, they'll probably just buy him out. Wildcard prediction: they buy them both out.
  16. The Carolina Hurricanes terminate the contract of Victor Berglund, who signed in Finland back in December (LINK). @Nail
  17. CODA - 8.5/10 (Apple TV+) One of the best movies I have seen in the last few years. It surprised me how funny it was. And then in the last half hour the were a few truly memorable scenes, that took it beyond just another coming-of-age story. Worthy of the Oscar, IMO.
  18. Simple solution: waive Myers after his bonus is paid. Arizona would take that and run. They're going to have trouble signing people to play there. And Myers will get lots of minutes and might end up worth a pick at the deadline with 50% retention (which also costs Arizona barely any actual cash).
  19. I'd rather buy out OEL than trade an asset to dump Garland. CG is criminally underrated.
  20. So…by this logic, Florida should have stayed away from Tkachuk? You gotta feel for PLD just a little. He’s a young guy who’s had to languish in 2 of the smaller cities in the NHL. First Columbus, under Torts no less, then Winnipeg, while the team seems to have serious locker room issues. Can you blame him from wanting to go to a bigger market with some stability? On paper, Miller for Dubois (with extension) makes some sense. Miller is by far the better player offensively, but we already have that in spades. What we really need is players who can make more of a defensive impact, and Dubois fits the bill. I’d at least want to talk to the agent, and see if Dubois would do the extension in Vancouver, or if he prefers being in the East.
  21. The thing with Yamamoto is he’s still young enough to be only a 1/3 buyout. But still, another swing-and-a-miss by the Oilers’ scouts…
  22. Petersen has 2 years left at $5M per. That’s a lot of money for a guy who wasn’t even a legitimate NHL back-up last year. Far worse than overpaid depth like Myers and Garland.
