Heinen never played center in the NHL. He has taken a total of 51 faceoffs in 246 career games. LOL - no.

Umm... Not sure I agree with that. For his faults, Green has shown a remarkable ability to develop young talent (3 Calder finalists in 3 years doesn’t just happen, and none even a top-3 pick). That said, some players just don’t work under some coaches. And even those that do need a fresh voice once in a while. It’s looking like the majority of the team does. So while I agree it’s time to fire the coach(es), I don’t think there was a problem with what Green had accomplished with them up to this season.

Hurricanes place Jeremy Lauzon on IR (Link), and recall Ross Colton. @Nail (I’m going to guess that Colton isn’t in pickup yet.)

Thanks to @Gally for the smooth negotiations. I was going to wait until closer to the deadline to add a goalie, but not getting any points from a backup has been hurting me too much in the standings. Oilers are looking like a lock to make the playoffs, and Smith turns 39 next month, so I expect to get lots of games out of him, and maybe even some playoff games.

This offseason Johnson and Palat’s NTCs become LNTCs with 20-team trade lists. And Killorn has a 16-team list. Between the 3 of them, they should have no trouble moving some cap. The expansion draft should be interesting though. I don’t see how they can protect Hedman, McDonagh, Sergachev, Cernak, AND Foote. But they still have a number of prospects, and almost all their picks, so they can probably work out a deal with Seattle to take Johnson. Maybe they’ll also send Palat or Killorn, along with a pick and/or prospect.

I don't understand why people want to trade Virtanen now. His value is at an all-time low...we will probably have to give him away. It's true, he needs a fresh start, but he may get that for us under a new coach. He's been playing for Green for YEARS (AHL & NHL), and has struggled for most of it. Maybe a new voice will help him improve, at least enough to make him a more valuable trade asset. This season has been a mess. Trade Pearson, Sutter, and Benn (sooner the better, IMO), and try to give away Roussel (free player who doesn’t have to quarantine... maybe a team would bite to cover an injury). But I wouldn't sell low on any of the younger players. Wait to see how they perform under the next coach first.

Markstrom’s career arc is very similar to Devan Dubnyk. Same size. Highly touted 1st rounder, took years to develop, finally found his way under a new goalie coach (Burke). Had a few years where he was considered an all-star, and was a finalist for the Vezina. Then, very suddenly, his game fell off a cliff. It was his age 33 season. Markstrom is obviously a different player, but if he has the same career arc, his contract will be a problem in year 3. He’s having more injury troubles than Dubnyk, so it may even happen sooner.

Burr didn’t just work hard, he worked smart. He worked so well with the Sedins because he was able to figure out what they were doing and adapt while so many others couldn’t. I seem to remember AV saying he was the smartest (hockeywise) player on the team. Doesn’t surprise me at all that he’s having success as a coach. Hockey IQ, hard work, non-stop talker, and had great relationships with his teammates.

Congratulations to Ross Colton on his first NHL goal (in the first period of his first NHL game!). However, that’s the second time in the past week a guy in my minors scored a GWG.

For the first part, definitely. We’ve seen what kind of player Miller can be under normal circumstances. This year is unique in so many ways - from not being able to hang out with his teammates, to not being able to see his family, to having to watch the team that traded him away win the Cup... I wouldn’t be making long-term judgment calls on young/prime players based on this. However, for the second part, you may be surprised. There are 5 teams in Canada fighting for 4 playoff spots. If any of them want to add a player without them having to quarantine and miss 1/8 of the season, they have only 2 trade partners: Vancouver & Ottawa. I suspect prices for our players will be higher than normal. Not only that, but Ottawa doesn’t have a lot of trade chips. Most of their team is young and growing. Outside of Stepan (who rumours say desperately wants to get back to an American team for personal reasons), the next 2 best impending UFA forwards available are probably Pearson and Sutter. If it’s an impending UFA D-man you want, it’s pretty much just Gudbranson or Benn (possibly Hamonic, but not sure he’ll waive).

Odds now just 10.8%. 3rd worst in the league, only ahead of Detroit and Ottawa. Think it’s safe to say even the optimists know this season is done now.

To make room for a pending trade, Carolina sends down Oscar Dansk and Mathias Brome. @Nail

Best one was when the narrator had this long spiel about something political, and the metalheads just stared, confused. Then he said: “Breast Reduction Surgery”, and they were full-on head-banging “LAME!!! LAME!!! LAME!!!...”

http://moneypuck.com/predictions.htm Canucks currently at 19% odds to make the playoffs - 5th worst in the league. What makes it even worse is, we're in the one 7-team division. And Ottawa is terrible. So the odds would be worse if we were in any other division.

Carolina waives Gerald Mayhew, send to minors if he clears. Recall Mathias Brome. @Nail

...Can we get this COVID thing done already? I’m just itching to see live music again.

Artemi Panarin accused of assault, taking leave of absence

Putin’s gotta Putin. -
Agreed. I only worry about the Canucks being “in it” just enough to convince Benning to buy at the deadline. That would be foolish. I hope we sell at the deadline, and use the assets to help dump Loui and stock the system a bit. Then hope EP, Miller, and Hughes get their mojo back next season.

He makes some good points at times. But he’s kind of like J.D. Burke. Even when you agree with what he’s saying, you still kind of want to punch him in the face because of how he’s saying it. But the funny thing is - and complete opposite of Burke - he’s a total homer...Apollo-level. He always takes the Canucks’ side, even if it means contradicting a previous stance. It’s sort of endearing, even when I don’t agree. Because behind all of this facade, we’re all just fans expressing our fandom.
-
If we ignore the 3 games against Ottawa, this team is 5-12-1 against the teams they are trying to catch, with a -25 goal differential on only 18 games. They’re not “mathematically” out of it yet, but I’m certainly not holding my breath.
-
So of course he scored a GWG.

Mike Babcock signs 2 year contract

I’m with @smokes - don’t think he deserved to be fired in the first place. What did he do? Made some entitled teenagers feel uneasy? Good! That will show those little s***s! -
Why is Höglander so good? And can he win some hardware?
D-Money replied to ImConfused's topic in Canucks Talk
Ty Smith is a defenseman, but has 1 less point in half the games, and is a +6. If he keeps up this pace he’ll win the Calder. If Nils is a finalist, Canucks will hold the record for the most consecutive Calder finalists with 4. Right now they share the record (3) with the Rangers. (But for Canucks to do it in a 31-team league is far more impressive, not to mention none of the Rangers actually won the Calder.) -
Although I am in the “expose Myers” camp (and have even suggested we trade Seattle something to take him), there definitely isn’t much to choose from for UFA RD this offseason. Barrie, Demers, Hamonic, and K. Miller are probably the top options, and any or all of them might extend before free agency. But there are a number of teams with as many as 5+ solid D-men (veteran and younger) that need protection (in particular Carolina, Colorado, Philadelphia, and Tampa). I think we should try to acquire one of these (preferably a RD, but a lefty who can play right side can still work) before the draft, and protect that guy, Schmidt, and Juolevi. Then if Seattle takes Myers (whether on their own accord, or even if we added a sweetener) it’s not as big of a loss. Can also then extend Hamonic after the draft (think he’ll be much better when he settles in), and/or bring Tryamkin back. Myers has been good for us, but certainly not great. He’s also got 3 years left at $6M per. It won’t be a terrible thing to have that contract disappear.
