It can also be a tough living playing in the ECHL or lower. I had some coworkers who were former pros and they were just scraping by in lower leagues (ie. SPHL) and it took them awhile to give up their dream of hockey in the big leagues. Especially with the high risk of injury and time commitment, playing minor hockey professionally is just not for everybody.
He's got one of the most lethal shots in the NHL. Would it be nice to sign him but I don't see how we can afford him without a trade to move out some of the bad contracts.
This is exactly like the Ehrhoff trade back in 2010. Sharks were cap strapped at the time and we got a smooth skating, offensive top 4 dman at a discount.
Tanev is a warrior, but I shudder to think what he'd be like at 34 or 35 years old. He's already fought through a ton of injuries. If he really wanted that term, the Flames can have him.
This is now his 4th team in the last 3 years. Anaheim (who have no RD other than Manson) gave him up for a 5th rounder.
Good for the guy to secure a $4M contract though.
He had a stellar junior career, was a stud at WJC and was a top 10 pick. He looked like the next great Canadian dman.
He really did fall off and I'm not entirely sure what happened.
