This. Inaction can make you complicit. It's not enough to use the argument "well I didn't do that so I share no blame", my counter argument is what did you do to stop it from happening? It's not enough to just not push someone down, it's about helping them back up when they are down. That's what we need to be doing now.

https://www.vicnews.com/news/fire-set-to-malahat-totem/ This is such a bummer.. I don't agree with the churches either, but this is just messed up... Both totems, and churches are works of art and destroying that won't help anything at all. Based off the writing, gotta think it was someone younger. Incredibly disappointing.

Dude, he posted a documentary on the subject at hand. This seems like the exact type of discussion that I was trying to open up by starting this thread. I started a thread so people can share information on subject that many Canadians have not had enough exposure to. I for one will definitely be watching that video later when I have time.

While I see where your coming from, I can't agree with that either. No one should be forced into assimilation. In a perfect world we can all celebrate each other, and the different cultures that people bring to a community. I don't think we are anywhere close to that yet, but I would love to be alive when/if the world every reaches that point.

All of the above likely. While the schools were active they reported over 3,200 deaths of kids in their care. Most of the deaths came from disease caused by poor living conditions and neglect. Those are the reported deaths. We have searched 7 of the 139 schools and found 1,500 more unreported deaths. The amount of kids that these schools killed is astronomical. The amount of damage it did, and is still doing to the Indigenous community is overwhelming. There is a book by Mark Wolynn on inherited trauma that describes how traumatic experiences can live on for generations past the actual event. We still have a long way to go before we can start to overcome what happened to those kids.

There is a book called "They Called Me Number One: Secrets and Survival at an Indian Residential School" that is definitely worth reading. The writer Bev Sellars attended a residential school and accounts her time there. She reffers to the residential school as the "Brown Holocaust" and says that they used to refer to is as beating the Indian out of the kids. While not a direct comparable to the scale of the Holocaust, there was a similar end goal. It was to eliminate the culture of the first people. I don't think that comparable is as crazy as people are saying it is here.

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-canada-day-celebrations-subdued-amid-focus-on-residential-schools/ I didn't see a thread for this, apologies if I just missed it but this deserves its own thread, not just to be talked about in the world events page. This is a place where we can share our feelings, and talk about what ever needs to be talked about. We are up to over 1500 bodies found in 7 schools. There was a total of 139 schools across Canada, so that death toll will likely sky rocket as schools are further investigated. We have witnessed first hand over the last few years the results of rascism down in America with the Black Lives Matter movement. This is a stark reminder that this inequality is rampant even in our own country. I had a conversation this morning with a friend that upset me. They were complaining that they feel victimized for being white, for something they didn't do. They are a good person, I know they are. But it was rediculous to me that they were complaining about something like that, in a time like this. Right now, it is everyone's job to carry the burden left from the traumatic events of our history. Our indigenous communities need out support now more then ever. I for one am ready to brace my back to do what ever I can. I have indigenous blood, my dear sweet great grandma was half First Nation. Back when I was a kid, our first Nation history was not taught in schools. I attended a pretty split school of First Nation student's, and I did have the opportunity to learn about their history in my First People's History class in grade 9. It was an elective, I took it instead of home ec. Even as a kid that felt so incredibly wrong to me. But I'm glad I did it, it helped me understand what was happening in the community. Since then I have learned to carve First Nation art, and have even been trying to learn Halkomelem over the last few years since my mom is a fluent speaker. It has felt very important to me as adult to show my Nana how proud I am of her heritage. I am a very proud Canadian. Right now is the time for all proud Canadians to pay attention to our history. Do research and find out what you can do to support our indigenous population, because as this death toll rises, so will the wounds caused by this stain on our Canadian history. If anyone is currently interesting in taking a step forward and attempting to edcuated themselves on the current issues and our Indigenous people's history, I highly recommend the free course offered by University of Alberta. https://www.ualberta.ca/admissions-programs/online-courses/indigenous-canada/index.html I took this last year around lock down when I had free time on my hands. I found it incredibly well done and informative. I have since reffered family, friends and even some of my patients to this course and had overwhelmingly positive reviews from the people who took the time to engage with the material. If book learning ain't your bag, here is a list of helpful recourses that may be able to aid you in taking the next step. https://truenorthaid.ca/first-nations-charities-html/ https://reconciliationcanada.ca/get-involved/how-to-get-involved/ https://www.irsss.ca/

My buddy would owe me so much beer. I have been preaching the gospel of Eklund for awhile. My gut tells me Eklund will be the best player taken in the top of this draft. Some reports have him slipping to the 5-6 range, but I'm completely convinced he goes in the top 3 picks.

Racial inequality is very real and something that must be put an end too. But this has nothing to do with race. People of all backgrounds get away with sexual assaults and rape every single day. A man accused of numerous sexual assaults just ran the superpower below us for 4 years. Yes racial equality needs to be addressed, it's the reason I won't be wearing red or celebrating today at all. But this was a rapist getting away with it, plain and simple. This is why I have got so heated in the Virtanen threads time and time again.

Jim Benning's Trade & Free Agents History
MeanSeanBean replied to DelChristensen's topic in Canucks Talk
Has nothing to do with a different opinion and everything to do with quality of post. Further more, if this is based on entertainment purposes, my post got upvoted to the moon. So my response achieved the exact reaction a post like this deserved. -
Sure, I'm not say I was expecting him to light the world on fire. I'm also sure we could go out and find someone just like him from the SHL. But we didn't need to go find Brogan. He was right there and waiting to play games. I guess the point I'm making, was Chatfield found his way into 18 games this season because we were so short on right shot D. Why not give Brogan a couple more looks, just to see if he could hold his own in the NHL after being so successful in the AHL.
-
I'm kinda with Button. Why didn't he get a few more looks in the bigs? He was clearly an effective player for Utica, and was a player in the position we are weakest. Gotta trust the management team that they didn't see any NHL player, but still curious.

I would only trade up a few spots for Clarke this draft. In every other position there is a constellation prize I am ok with. Realistically speaking if we want a C we can pick McTavish, if we want a winger we have Johnson or possibly even Guenther if we get super lucky. Even though one of the Ds, or Eklund would be a dream, I don't see them worth a trade up for. Clarke fills a role out team desperately needs, and if a team like Detroit wants to pick Wallstedt, maybe it's worth them trading down a few spots.
-
I will be estatic if we some how walk away with Guenther at 9. I personally think he's BPA at 4. I think the fact that he is a winger in a draft with a ton of D's and some solid C's at the top is the only reason he will slip, if he does.

I highly doubt Raty goes in the top 10. If we picked him at 9 I wouldn't be pleased. I think he is a talented player, but there are much better options at 9, at least in my opinion.
