If you can compile a list of good things he's done that doesn't involve drafting Pettersson/Hughes, maybe I'll read the rest of what you wrote.  I'm quite confident I could double your list, if not outnumber it threefold, with a list of mistakes or sub-par moves he made.

Again, this isn't bashing, it's simply the truth about his tenure.  It's been a D+ at best, which isn't a failure, but far from good enough.  Mike Gillis was fired for far less when he was a far more competent GM than Benning has ever shown and yet we keep continuing with Benning when we really shouldn't.  That's all I've ever argued.

      So @Alain Vigneault

A GM's success includes, trading, drafting and FA signings. To take away, for example, Pettersson/Hughes, this means that you have an incomplete (and distorted) picture. Whether you like it or not, Benning gets credit for drafting, which is completely reasonable as Benning's career was primarily a scout. He is therefore considered an expert on this.

Gillis left a lot of the prospect cupboard bare. Do we not talk about drafting then because it's supposed to be a team effort? Drafting was a MAJOR weak point for Gillis.

What about free agent signings? Which players did he sign or trade that have the same kind of impact that the Miller transaction has done? Ehrhoff?

Do we suddenly credit Gillis for managing the disaster of the goalie situation, and being lucky that Horvat succeeded for us?

My list for "proving" Benning is not necessary at this point. I am criticizing how you are evaluating a situation when you ask to leave out certain aspects of a GM's job because it doesn't fit your narrative.
