The friendly wager... Trudeau vs Biden
Dazzle replied to DarthMelvin's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Politics has nothing to do with a wager that goes back quite a bit. It's meant to be fun. -
No matter how you spin this, this is a good signing.

[Report] Sabres name Don Granato as head coach
Dazzle replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
They've gone through so many coaches and GMs, you really have to wonder at some point if the players themselves should be blamed... -
I'm a big fan of hot weather, but I was really suffering yesterday and last night. I've had poor sleep, plus during my waking hours, I felt dizzy. I kept drinking water, but it never seemed to be enough. I don't want to go through another heat wave like that again.

The "Hindsight is 20/20" Draft Reflection Thread
Dazzle replied to HKSR's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Coulda woulda shoulda You're right to point out that until Benning came around, drafting and developing players was an Achilles heel for the team, especially when Gillis was around. For all the good things he did, people still romanticize the entire run, and selectively forgetting all the terrible draft picks (some of which ended up busting due to injury and what not), but also the amount of draft picks thrown away. The Grabner for Ballard trade was just terrible, for instance. And yet people just want to forget about the poor Gillis drafting, saying it's been so many years. The problem is that the holes he did not fill are some of the reasons why the Canucks aren't a Tampa Bay Lightning. A lot of their picks, for instance, panned out, thus serving as depth. -
Why would Vancouver do this trade?

You're telling me that you were privy to a particular prospect more than other scouts? It would've been believable if you said Glass was 5 because a lot of mock drafts had him there. But to say you had Pettersson ranked there is not at all believable. Only one source put him at 5. The rest were quite diverse. One source didn't even put him in the first round! Unfortunately for you, I did a search and saw that you didn't write a lot about Dobson OR Pettersson. Why do you have to lie?

[Signing] Canucks sign Vasili Podkolzin

I think that's a narrow minded way of looking at things. Anyone who achieved 20 goals (or whatever) is deserving of recognition. -

Come to think of it, Prab Rai injured himself while driving his Mercedes. He was a long shot being a 6th 5th rounder, but still, there was nothing else to suggest he couldn't make it. Uhh... I just looked this up now... Defendants Prabhraj Singh Rai aka Prab Rai and Anastacia Kanellos aka Anastacia Rai and Harbhajan Singh Rai aka Bubby Rai and Gurjit Kaur Rai and Jasraaj Rai aka Raju Rai and Joseph & Chanan Clothing Inc. and Lionsgate Enterprises Ltd. and 1100020 B.C. Ltd. and 1172323 B.C. Ltd. and Does and Doe Co. Plaintiff Harpreet Singh Khela Claim Damages for fraud and conversion arising from defendant Prab Rai using phony emails and financial statements while holding himself out as a successful businessman with connections to international companies and retired professional hockey players to induce plaintiff into investing nearly $3 million in fictitious real estate projects and other investment opportunities. https://biv.com/article/2021/01/whos-getting-sued-january-4-2021 -
The "Hindsight is 20/20" Draft Reflection Thread
Dazzle replied to HKSR's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
After reading the article: https://www.vancouverisawesome.com/canucks-hockey/the-unusual-stories-of-the-10-worst-canucks-skaters-of-all-time-2216631 I do sympathize with Stojanov now. I think his injury at the AHL level wrecked his game. Plus I think he was misused because he said he wanted to be "more than a tough guy". I think it would be more fair to blame Canucks management. And you were right about the car accident - both Stojanov and Antoski were victims of them. -

I didn't know about his car accident, but based on the stats leading up to the draft, he was a terrible pick for a 1st rounder, especially one that was so high. Edit: Did you mean Shawn Antoski? Edit: Nvm, him AND Stojanov both got into separate car accidents. Yikes. https://www.vancouverisawesome.com/canucks-hockey/the-unusual-stories-of-the-10-worst-canucks-skaters-of-all-time-2216631 Alas, he did not. Antoski was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers early in the 1994-95 season and played another 115 NHL games before a devastating car accident left him with a depressed skull fracture, ending his career. Vancouver absolutely sucked at drafting and developing, despite being gifted draft picks that were ranked so high. -
You did support the Petey pick. I remember going through the thread several times and your name didn't stick out like some people's, like messier's elbow. LOL. Well, to his credit, he realized the error of his ways and recanted what he said after about an hour or so. It's actually surprising that the most negative of the posters of the pick aren't usually found here - HFBoards is a cesspool.
-
I have always liked your takes on this upcoming draft prospects. It's awesome that you love watching young players and then explain in detail about why you like or don't like a player. I also like the fact that you aren't afraid to go against the grain because you've seen the player.
-
Oh gawd, yeah. Some people heard about Pettersson being good, but his size was definitely a concern. Others thought Pettersson was going to bust (HFBoards was pretty guilty of this). For those who knew about him, almost EVERY SINGLE LIST, minus one of them, did not have Pettersson at 5. https://thehockeywriters.com/elias-pettersson-2017-nhl-draft-prospect-profile/ Another list here: http://www.mynhldraft.com/2017-draft/2017-nhl-draft-rankings Hockey Prospect nailed the 2017 draft for the first 5 picks. So therefore, for TGokou to claim he had Pettersson at 5 is completely bollocks. Even if Pettersson was thought to be good, some posters thought he would mostly be available when traded down. In other words, Pettersson at 5 was considered a reach. Obviously, the Canucks were more than comfortable with the guy, given how he had been scouted by Vancouver early on.
-
Your rankings look cherry-picked. Let's see you produce a list of prospects eligible for 2021 RIGHT NOW and explain why each prospect belong there. Dobson hasn't done nearly as much as Hughes has, and I find it laughable that you still think your opinion on Dobson "could still change". Also, next to no one had Pettersson at 5 in 2017. That's another example why I think you are cherrypicking with the benefit of a 20/20 hindsight. Caufield is/was good, but his small size should've been a "concern". I am all for small players succeeding, but there's a reason why he slipped, much like how Podkolzin did too. It doesn't mean they're BAD players. Certainly, Caufield has blossomed for MTL, and I am very happy for him.

Benning on Sportsnet 650 with Halford & Brough - June 24, 2021
Dazzle replied to CRAZY_4_NAZZY's topic in Canucks Talk
You forget that Tampa Bay had the luxury of a good team set up, with loads of their prospects that are playing for them. All the while legally circumventing the cap. Uh huh. And meanwhile, Gillis didn't draft squat except maybe two players, leaving Benning a black hole for prospects. The comparisons between the two teams are not fair at all. -
-
Trevor Wong should be available in the 2nd or 3rd round. A really good player, a centre and wins faceoffs. A bit smallish at 5'8 at 154 though, but very skilled. Doesn't play small. Also a BC boy. Big fan of the Canucks.

[Rumour] Jake Debrusk done in Boston?
Dazzle replied to 48MPHSlapShot's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
It pains me too that he did this entirely on himself. It wasn't someone else that ruined him. This kind of squandering is just inexplicable on so many levels. -
Having read all of AV's posts in this thread, his views are no more than a regurgitation of his pre-existing views, which are usually more negative in tone than positive. It's also fair to state that he was very quick to point out the one positive thing he mentioned. I would dare say he used that as some kind of proof that he was a level-headed commentator. Unfortunately, that is far from the truth. The "state of the team", as he ambiguously refers to, is not some static entity; it's ever-changing. From when Benning took over to now, the so-called state of the team has changed multiple times. Sometimes for better. Sometimes for worse. But if you were to take AV's words at face value, you'd think the state of the team has never improved. This silly observation is comparable to the equally laughable assumption that the team is "trending downwards". More accurately, the team is up and down. Trending downwards would be like San Jose and Buffalo. The state of the team IS currently being addressed with the additions of assistant coaches, including one new one - Brad Shaw, as well as the removal of another - Newell Brown. Whether or not this will change anything remains to be seen. The same can be said about the Sedins' hiring. Furthermore, with the use of buyouts and possible trade opportunities due to freed cap space, the state of the team ostensibly will be addressed. AV commented very little on the positively received news of the coaching changes, which is not a surprise. There's posters who are realistic/even-handed. AV is simply not one of them. His shtick is "Hope this helps", and it never does.

[Rumour] Jake Debrusk done in Boston?
Dazzle replied to 48MPHSlapShot's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
That draft year with Boston having three first round picks not panning out is something funny. Debrusk was their best pick out of their three too... -
No, it is/was inexcusable that the 2nd round picks were traded away like candy (similar to how Nonis did it), and unlike Nonis who actually COULD draft some players, Gillis could not. Practically the only thing we got out of Gillis' years was Hutton and Horvat (traded for Schneider - Nonis). There's so many excuses about Gillis "trying to win", but this is absolutely a smokescreen for this abject failure. Failure to draft and develop has cost this team depth.
