Francesco Aquilini owes Canuck Nation an explanation.

Then there are guys like Squam and Alain Vigneault who will complain about the team, yet there's no proof that they ever watch the games because they're too jaded. -
Francesco Aquilini owes Canuck Nation an explanation.

If you talk to certain fans, they'll just say Gillis didn't fail, and that Benning 'undid' everything that Gillis had set up. There's a lot of blinders on for some fans who are only interested in confirming their biases. -
I have to say that a real leader is one who makes decisions on their own, DESPITE the significant criticism. If FA capitulated to the noisy fan pressure and all that talk about cancelling season tickets, he would have been a weak leader. Clearly, management is not an easy job. Everyone is constantly looking to point fingers at you. FA just showed that you can still do the right thing under the most difficult circumstances. He really could've pin it on all the outgoing people, but it looks like he's a people person. He doesn't just look at the numbers. I also have a greater appreciation for Green. Clearly, if the players wanted him gone, they would've spoken privately to Benning to fire him. Yet this was not the case, nor was the case that Baumer is an idiot and that everyone has 'tuned him out'. The reality is that respect goes both ways. I would imagine that the relationship within the room is still surprisingly good. Nobody wants each other in trouble. The team, as a whole, failed, but it's not any one single person's fault. That to me says the team is very accountable to themselves and there is no 'ego' factor.

[Report] Canucks sign Travis Green to contract extension

Is that why we always have too many men on the ice? -
I think we all have had different (sometimes opposing) opinions on the owners, the management, the coaches, and even the players. I think that after much deliberation, FA decided to calm things down, much like he has done in the past, by keeping everyone. I think this is the RIGHT move. There has been A LOT of talk about Benning being someone that a player doesn't want to 'play for', which is ridiculous. And there's been A LOT of talk about Green (and his assistants) being incompetent at their jobs. That being said, we as fans are not privy to how well they work together. I am certain that for an owner to find scapegoats, he could have easily blamed others and given into fan pressure. YET he doesn't, at least not in a way that 'fans' wanted it. Therefore, this stabilizing move differs significantly from teams like Calgary, Montreal and even Buffalo, where all (or many) of the coaches were let go of their respective teams. FA is demonstrating again that he is a STABLE owner who is not pressured by ignorant 'fans'. I know that I've criticized Green, but I really don't have any more information about what he's like in the room. For all we know, he could have tried his absolute best, and never threw people under the buses publicly or privately. Benning may also be in fact a good guy. He may have tried his best as well, without resorting to scapegoating. Upon reflecting on these new developments, I think we should be lucky we have FA as an owner. The relationships made on this team from top down are most definitely NOT as toxic as 'fans' and media have portraying it to be. We should all be appreciative of stability. Hopefully everyone does better next year. We have a compassionate owner who UNDERSTANDS that COVID affected this team a lot. Let's try not to generalize people again, moving forward. Reddit fans are largely toxic by comparison (not all). I believe that as fans, we can all do better, including myself. Let's not foster anymore toxicity. There's clearly no toxicity on this team, from top down. Trying to force this narrative is dishonest.

Perhaps he's not signing because of Jim Benning... /Sarc I swear someone will want to believe that because it fits their narrative.
-
True. He's supposedly in the same range, but as you said, he might get plucked early. I know i'll be happy with whomever we pick.
-
If you go a few pages back, our resident Russian poster Stierliz said that he can be signed now. There is some confusion about what's happening to him now. Pod is apparently left off the roster, but is still going as a spare (according to Dhaliwal). Some other posters have mentioned that Demko was given a lot of time to focus on his tournament before given a contract, which he really appreciated. Maybe this will happen with PodZ.

Kent Johnson doesn't seem to get much attention. Local guy. Currently with the Univ. Of Minnesota. Playmaking centre. Highly skilled passer.

[Report] Jim Benning to return for next season
Dazzle replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Could've told people sooner. We have a terrible reputation as fans around the league. This cements it. -
Can't believe I'm agreeing with you Buzzsaw. I hate watching the mindless plays the players are directed to make, as well as the excessively cute passes in the defensive zone for breakouts. The PP is absolutely crap. I don't understand why/how the players are so hesitant to shoot. Also, i don't understand why Green's brand of hockey often (not always) involves getting heavily outshot. We saw this in the LV series, where he was obviously outcoached beyond oblivion, but Demko kept Vancouver in it.

I don't know if you're deliberately ignoring what I just said, or not. Lehner speaking to the media about the league not doing anything for the players, is a close comparison to what Miller said/did for his team. In both cases, the owners are in an awkward position. Notice how Las Vegas DID NOT release a statement either about what Lehner said. LOOK AT THE ACTUAL LANGUAGE that Lehner used. Is this not worse than what Miller did or said? FTR, I 100 percent support Lehner's perspective on this. I believe he has nothing to apologize for. He makes excellent points. https://www.tsn.ca/vegas-golden-knights-goaltender-robin-lehner-clarifies-covid-19-comments-in-twitter-thread-1.1627599

That's exactly what my point is. A player speaking out from what the owners may probably not want the players to say. Lehner praised the league for some good things, but he also said that they should have done more about mental health. Having a player on the team call out the league for bull$&!# (Lehner) is far worse than what Miller said. And yet we are still having a discussion about the so-called 'rift' of management and players.
-
So who's his source? They are most likely relying on local media. This is a game of telephone. If you repeat a story many many times, it becomes 'true'. The media is a JOKE. They are here to sell stuff, or get their 'name' in. Notice how a report like Dhali went from respected insider to gossip teller? The industry is a lot dirtier than we acknowledge it to be. The media DOES NOT necessarily report truth.
-
I think Miller did the right thing to speak out. Ownership doesn't really have control. You can see how ownership was fined for speaking out against the league. I would assume New York will not be in the league's good graces, but that owner is MASSIVELY rich. Much richer than Aquilini. I don't fault ownership for not saying anything. We've also seen Robin Lehner say stuff. Las Vegas didn't make any statement condoning Lehner either. So what do you say about that?
-
Do you have the media reports from other teams? Particularly non-playoff teams? Until you do, there is no way you can extrapolate the situation as them being unhappy about a GM. That is a significant leap in logic. "A lot of people in the media" - a lot of people in the media were either reporting/passing on reports that Hughes was on IV too. "A lot of people" sounds very vague. We do not know any information, and whatever the media reports should always be taken with a grain of salt.
-
No one's ever going to be happy at one point or another in a company. Look at the other teams. How many of them will want trade requests from CBJ, with or without Torts? Without any context, asking for trade requests is pretty normal. It doesn't necessarily mean it will happen either. And honestly, some trade requests have nothing to do with the 'performance of a GM'. It's silly to think that people want to change their entire living situation because of a GM who underperformed the past 7 years. It's absolutely silly. People have families too, and maybe a move away from Vancouver is something that has already been in the works. These scumbag reporters are misconstruing the reports.

Really? You really still think that coaches don't have a responsibility in this? Exact same system as last year. Big differences. The departure of certain players isn't a persuasive enough of a case - case in point, Calgary. How about considering that the coaching (this includes the assistants) is subpar?
