what grade (1 to 10) would you give Travis Green?
Dazzle replied to grouse747's topic in Canucks Talk
I would agree. 6.5-7. Anyone who thinks he is a 'great' coach is watering down the meaning of great. He seems to be a good guy, personality wise. Credit should go to him for bringing the team beyond the 1st round. Of course he had a lot of help, but everyone has to step up in the playoffs. That being said, his deployment of players has always been questionable at best. Not using timeouts when available. The too many men penalties. No linematching. Low shot counts on net. There's a number of recurring themes on Green's team. I think he doesn't deserve to be kicked when he's down though. I just want to see another coach that offers a fresh voice. -
You've got a confirmation bias issue. You make claims that Benning was too "dumb" to let go of Gaudette in the past offseason, while wilfully ignoring the possibility that his value was crap. If Benning had let go of Gaudette during THAT low point (low enough that Benning didn't want to trade him), you'd probably say "well he should've let him go when he had 20+ points, but he's too dumb." Is that actually helpful analysis? No. This isn't meant to be a strawman argument that I'm putting here.

So it seems like there isn't a source, and the 'source' that you were referring to was merely speculating. I haven't heard or seen Colliton make a comment about Gaudette. I know wall said he isn't surprised or upset Gaudette has been traded, but the amount of defense that Wall is giving Gaudette is more than the defensive work of Gaudette...

I consider you to be a reasonable poster, yet I cannot fathom why you have made the fatal assumption of Benning being "dumb" as a possible explanation. It is such a juvenile position for you to take, and it conflicts with my thoughts on whether to take you seriously. Nevertheless, you have essentially propped yourself up to be invalidated. 1. "If he was smart" - this shows your bias. Another point on you saying he "should have traded Gaudette in the offseason" - this assumes Gaudette's value was high, which is another fatal assumption you have made. It begs the question, if his value was high enough to be let go, why didn't Benning do it? And as soon as you revert to the reason that "Benning is dumb", then it demonstrates that you are filling in what you don't know about the situation with what you actually feel. Furthermore, if Benning were truly to be "dumb", he wouldn't have been a successful draft guru before being GM, nor would he have been able to identify Pettersson as being the prospect to gamble on, despite other 'popular' choices like Glass or Middelstadt. Nor would he have been able to select Hoglander, despite all of the 1st and some of the 2nd round missing out on an NHL calibre player. Gaudette has YET to prove that he can play on an NHL roster outside of the Canucks. The sample is still very small, but you seem content to argue on unstable ground. Again, your assumptions clearly bleed into your discussion. 3. The Canucks kept Gaudette, likely in the hopes of salvaging his value to the team. When that didn't happen, the Canucks cut their losses. Why is there an assumption that Benning didn't know how to "gauge" Gaudette's value? He did, after all, sign off on drafting Gaudette, even if Brackett had a hand in it as well. 4. Source? 5. You keep repeating the myth that Chicago has pro scouts that identify players, yet fail to figure out why they obtained Highmore in the first place. Also, this link will list all the bad trades that Chicago has made, thus invalidating your belief that Chicago's pro scouts are "pretty good at identifying" a player's strengths. https://blackhawkup.com/2020/02/18/chicago-blackhawks-stan-bowmans-7-worst-trades-gm/ Furthermore, Chicago's draft record is far from perfect, something that is similar with most teams, surprise surprise. You need to stop making assumptions that you can't support.

Wouldn't this statement contradict the other media reports (if we are to believe them) that Gaudette was used as trade bait earlier? There is also no logic to selling 'low' on someone. The only reason that something like this happens is if the player has next to no value. I'm certain that if Gaudette could have been had for more than Highmore, Benning would have let him go, considering he clearly wasn't fitting this team. The hilarious assumption by some posters here is that Benning is purposefully 'selling low'. Why would he do this? "Because he's dumb?" Of course not. This is the same GM that drafted the player in the first place in the 5th round (with the help of his scouts). The only conclusion was that Gaudette had no value. In fact, Chicago was willing to let go of Highmore, who you have abundantly stated many times that he was a regular healthy scratch. As for Gaudette being scratched three games in a row, it seems like he has no fit on Chicago either, at least for the time being. That or he's still recovering from COVID, despite the fact that he's listed as a healthy scratch. I think it's more likely that Colliton doesn't like Gaudette's game.

People on here think Montreal has it all, but in reality, they are in a whole lot of trouble if they don't make the playoffs, OR win the Stanley Cup. The cap situation is just awful. And Montreal's only 10 points above us. The only thing that Montreal does have is/was Toffoli. -

Luke does play a bit more physical than Quinn, but less offensive upside. -

We had zero prospects after Gillis. He obtained Horvat only after trading away Schneider (Nonis pick). Four years may have been enough for a team that had prospects in the pipeline. -

Gillis wrecked this franchise imo. Left a bunch of fans who were spoiled rotten from the prospects picks of Nonis' and Burke, and obliterated the prospect pool. Anyone coming in would have failed after Gillis. -

Squam will always blame Benning regardless of the facts. Some on this fanbase is only concerned about blaming the GM. -

Definitely the case. He lost his journalistic integrity long ago. What a true fall from grace. He hung out with Sekeres and kin too much. -

Montreal isn't exactly lighting the north Division on fire. It took a ton of coach firings and Toffoli to get 10 more points than us. -

I'm sorry, but coaching. 30 shots OTT vs 18. This is Green's brand of coaching. Don't throw picks on net because you'll mess with the shot to goal efficiency stats. -

Just comes to show you that the construction of a roster isn't quite as easy as people on the boards make it out to be.
