  1. Kesler had next to no value. Burrows got Dahlen. A trade that was said to be pretty good. In the end, we received Linus Karlsson. He's developing in Sweden now. Meanwhile, Dahlen is toiling in Timra (still). Be hasn't advanced. Edler wasn't even Gillis' pick. While we still have Edler, note how there were no replacements for him in terms of prospects. That is on Gillis. Gillis left crap to Benning. Kanucks25 has constantly been ignoring evidence that doesn't support his points because all he cares about is bashing Benning at all costs, while glossing over Gillis' poor prospect pool.
  2. I've spoken at length about this; Gillis did a very poor job at planning for the future. Sure he may have had a President's Cup, most of which was from a core inherited from his predecessors, namely Edler. He made a number of good changes, like investing in sleep doctors, etc and helping to get a new locker room. There were a number of trades he simply got lucky on, namely the Markstrom/Luongo one, and the Horvat/Schneider. Markstrom had a lot of raw potential, but he was not a starter, at least at the beginning. He had to work hard. Horvat was good, but he had skating issues. Then there was the Grabner plus 1st round pick for Ballard (who was eventually bought out). If Markstrom/Horvat didn't elevate their games after the acquisitions, we would have an even crappier prospect pool. Make no mistake. Gillis brought the Canucks very close to the cup. He deserves credit for that. Yet to say Gillis was better than Benning is just flossing over Gillis' mistakes. His drafting/developing is indefensible. No good picks at all. We could write a paper on how Gillis' legacy continues to damage the Canucks today.
  3. A lot of this season wasn't really his fault though. It's absurd to think that the Canucks should've signed long contracts to players over 30. Tanev may have been the only correct signing. Maybe he erred there.
  4. I don't think that's what Benning supporters have said. They seem to be more worried that if we switch GMs, our drafting will go down, given this GM's history as a scout. It's difficult to argue that the prospect depth he has brought when immediately compared to Gillis has not improved. But then again, someone like Judd Brackett (who's not available) could somehow do the job. I think my biggest issue with this whole thing is Benning not reviewing the coaching staff. The mention of an extension is really disappointing.
  5. Why why why is he thinking about extending Green? This was a great opportunity to see what's out there. If he could have said he'll look at all options, including Green, I'd be fine. At this point, there is no due diligence.
  6. Draft picks and prospect development. Horvat is the only one you mentioned. Also, it should be noted that every GM will inherit a roster from previous predecessors. Edler was passed down from Nonis' regime. Tradable 2C, I assume you meant Kesler. Kesler wasn't Gillis' pick either, and the fact that Kesler had such a limited NTC that any good value was nuked. 100pt playoff team is kinda meaningless because the Canucks never could repeat that again. I haven't even been talking about first round picks. Gillis has nothing to show from 2nd round to after. Gillis threw away a lot of the first round picks that probably would've been late first in all likelihood. In any case, not a good look for a GM that doesn't make full use of the draft.
  7. You might be onto something. He's been in Timra ever since. Going overseas didn't seem to be his thing.
  8. See, there's always a "but" attached to Gillis with you, like, "But Benning has drafted top 10 most of his career, and Gillis hasn't!" What about any of the 2nd round picks and later? Who is still playing in the NHL that could possibly be tied to Gillis' drafting and development? I was a big fan of Shinkaruk, fyi. He was Gillis' best prospect by far, and it wasn't even close. His skating was good, and his shot was better. When he got injured, he wasn't the same. But when you don't provide depth, one injury will devastate whatever plan you have. Gillis' failure to set the team up for the future past 2014 has been an Achilles heel for this team. The way you say "it is all my opinion" is to downplay the lack of prospects and (valuable) players that Gillis left behind. You can overrate the value of players like Kassian all you want, but the reality was that the market doesn't agree. If you were a rebuilding team and if someone offered a late first for a player like Gaudette, would you take it? I think most people on the board would let him go if that were the case. Similarly, for players like Jensen, Shinkaruk and Kassian, if they could have been swapped for someone with equal or better value, the trades would've already happened. We've seen just how bad Gillis was with trading. Anytime he made trades, he'd get bent over. The problem was the reputation he had around the league because he was essentially blackballed.
  9. Thanks for the clarification and correction by you and mll.
  10. It's nice to see the stats behind this. Thanks. Yes, you're right. Gaudette is very snakebitten.
  11. They took away a first round pick, even though it was in the rules as a penalty for cap circumvention, did they not?
  12. Heinen has had better production than both Gaudette and Jake. It really seems like Gaudette has taken a step back, even though one can see that he is trying to do better. As for Guhle, I think people are just biased toward a familiar name, namely Madison Bowey. Guhle seems like he needs more time in the AHL.
  13. The way they handled the NJ/Kovalchuk thing and the Canucks for almost the exact same situation shows a blatant double standard. And here, Chicago's not getting punished at all for a long term contract. There is no recapture penalty as you mentioned, unlike the Luongo contract. All these long term contracts were very strategical.
  14. You're dodging the question. I've asked you to justify the drafting. This was why I've always suspected you of making excuses for Gillis. No one is criticizing the roster Gillis had during the cup run and the ones immediately after. However there was NO apparent plan post 2011. There were NO replacements for the Twins. Hell, there wasn't anyone like Hoglander in the system. I've already listed the players that seen to be promising now (but haven't made the NHL yet). There were no such players under Gillis. For anyone stepping in after Gillis, they had to start from scratch. WD did good the first year, but you start to see the staleness as time went by. It really is an indictment on Gillis not to have any player that be drafted step in, aside from Horvat, a top 10 pick acquired through a trade.
  15. And likewise, I am speaking the truth that Gillis left the team in a poor position. People like Kanucks25 (and yourself too) claimed the team was not as poor as I or others have suggested. How do you justify that there are no NHL players aside from Horvat that have gone on to play for either the Canucks or other teams in a meaningful way? Kanucks25 keeps bringing up Kassian and it's laughable. He's 30 years and he's a fringe forward at this point. If one were to check his stats, you'd see how shockingly bare they have been. Maybe he's had demons to fight, but that will be a different discussion. Your unwillingness to accept or entertain this conclusion, despite the clear evidence, is why I said you've been making all sorts of excuses for Gillis, while sparing nothing for Benning. The only thing we can maybe agree on is that both GMs have their share of screwups, although I haven't yet seen your opinion that Gillis screwed the pooch. My point has always been that Gillis has done more damage to this team than most people want to admit, regardless of his near Stanley Cup win. All of it came at a prohibitive price. A price we are still paying for.
  16. I actually don't hate him - I'm not one of Virt's haters. I was genuinely super happy for him scoring to shut the haters up. At the same time, I really want him to build off this, so that Virtanen would be this player that the Canucks don't walk away from. The disappointing thing about Virt is that he has all the size and skill in the world, but critics of him have been harping on his consistency, which is hard to defend. It hasn't been good. But he's got such raw skill.
  17. Unbelievable. It just comes to show you how razor thin the gap is with the competition. The firing doesn't have anything to do with tonight's win for them, obviously. This was long in the making.
  18. Kind of like you being obsessed with Benning? Can't stop badmouthing him when you get the chance. I don't have an issue with you doing that. I only have an issue when you do it while glossing over Gillis' failures. Besides, it's hard not to talk about these two GMs, considering how significant they've meant to the team. Don't you think?
  19. I'm super happy that he's producing. He needs to build off this, but let's not get carried away either; both goals were flukes lol.
  20. And yet... you've never been able to explain that Gillis has left the cupboard empty. There's no evidence to show that the team was left with good assets to rebuild the team properly. I don't care how many spare parts you named, whether it be Kassian, Kesler, or Jensen. For christ sakes, there were no good draft picks outside of Horvat, who was acquired 1 to 1 for a trade for Schneider. Risky trade that paid off, but only if Schneider didn't falter AND if Horvat didn't improve (he had skating issues). It was still risky.
  21. Is that a threat? It's a forum. If you have a difference of opinion, telling someone to cheer for another team is stupid. Your post showed nothing except pettiness. I'm not surprised at all that Alain Vigneault, the poster, approves such low class tactics.
  22. I'm all for a clearing of a house, honestly. Whoever's gonna come in as GM is gonna have a fun time with this roster. Expiring contracts that he doesn't have to worry about, lots of prospects, and a nice scouting team.
  23. Has anyone taken a look at Montreal's schedule? It's not easy at all. Two Winnipeg games. One of which MTL is down 2-0 in the first period. Still lots of time. Next two games is with Vancouver. Assuming we are 'easy' and they take 4 points, they are, at best, slowing down their decline. There's no guarantee that other teams don't win, notably Toronto who's on a 4 game winning streak. AND they're playing against us tonight AND the day after. Then Montreal plays calgary twice, but facing Jets two more times after that. I don't know... Montreal fans and management have every reason to be worried. You can bet MTL is gonna cheer for us against Toronto because their games in hand are going be mitigated if Toronto wins these two games.
  24. Green finalizes/handles the roster. This doesn't happen WITHOUT Green's approval. Also Macewen is a forward.
