Bad Reffing Thread (Including Tim Peel Firing)
Dazzle replied to Dazzle's topic in General Hockey Discussion
So you're saying gloves off, stick off - not roughing? Knocking a player down without the puck is not interference? Tripping a guy is not a penalty? Aka can opener. Hooking/holding to slow someone down is not a penalty? What's the point of having refs by your standard? Just let the players commit the most grievous penalties? -

So I take it you have no valid response to reality? You should take your own advice. -

So using your logic, if O'Reilly was so successful, how did St. Louis end up so bad to begin with? Logic is supposed to work at all times, not when you think it's convenient. Benning did inherit nothing. List the number of assets that Gillis left behind, including the number of draft picks that remained on the team before the transition. Ok? -

Have they been signed for 6M? Is Beagle signed for 6M? As Provost likes to say, these hypothetical scenarios do little but to create a strawman argument. LOL. the Bonino suggestion as being THE major factor for a cup is hilarious. Of course you'll go that route. I've largely been silent about bashing anyone really. The coach thing was more noticeable last year, but then it's amplified this year. That's my angle on it. St. Louis is an extreme example with Berube. They were initially at the bottom of the standings, but somehow won a cup. Correlation =/= Causation? Maybe but you can't deny that it truly does makes one wonder... See what I did there? You've been consistently against Benning - that much is obvious. Whenever there's an anti-Benning thread, you're right there. I don't even have to pull out many threads to point this out. Answer this: Did Gillis draft or develop any playeres that are still on the roster? Horvat is one... and? -
WSH/Boston game Frederic commits interference and roughing on the same play. No calls to both. What the &^@#?
-
Refs didn't call two penalties on the same play.
Interference + Roughing
But of course, Boston was playing.

Detroit, Ottawa and Buffalo have had issues on a multitude of levels. And the Canucks had nothing in the reserves with regards to prospects. -

Seems like selective criticism to me. Beagle had freshly won a cup when he arrived, yet he and Sutter tend to get a lot of flak for being bottom 6 players. Sutter had 20 goals at one point - not really a "nothing player". The blame should be on Benning for keeping these bad coaches though. -

Toffoli is playing really well for Montreal. Hindsight is 20/20. Even if Tanev and Markstrom aren't problematic players, they are still committing long term money for players that are older. Their risk increases from this point forward. If you go into the thread, lots of people have argued for signing Tanev and Markstrom - had we not mismanaged the cap. It's a low hanging fruit to bash Benning. Also, a lot of people who are wrong just refuse to admit it. Certain posters know who they are. As for the games in hand gap, you can't just assume one team will win the difference of games, while assuming Vancouver will lose all theirs. That is the epitome of irrational. It's a POSSIBLE scenario, but given the downward trend of all three teams, it's more likely that all three teams aren't playoff teams. Thus, making the offseason of Benning an actual win, rather than a loss. Look at Ottawa - they've started to catch fire after winning five games in a row. -

This is an issue with the coaching, which includes Baumer. Willie Desjardins' coaching career VAN total 246 109 110 27 245 2 4 .333 Travis Green Total 233 102 103 28 10 7 .588 1 playoff appearance Pretty mediocre record for TG, Almost identical, minus the much higher win percentage, yet having a much better roster than what WD ever had for the most part. No more rookie coaches please! IMO, I think Benning kept these rookie coaches as a kind of scapegoat for himself. It's still his fault though for keeping them as long as he did. -

This is exactly it, and people have been talking about Sutter and Roussell being signed for too long - yet they were under 30 when signed. The amount of hypocrisy in the fanbase is amusing. Bashing a GM for not committing long term money, but bashing the same GM for long term contracts that anchor a roster. -

Ah Alain Vigneault. This is significant... By the words "not directly", you're acknowledging that you thought Calgary was a cup contender. LOL. Not surprised that you're doubling down like a certain other poster does, starts with a P ends with a Vost - and Kanucks25. Just admit it - a whole bunch of ppl like yourself were wrong about Calgary. -

3 games won, at most, gives you 6 points. Hardly enough anyone to say Calgary had a 'massive' improved, let alone say they are cup contenders. This is my point of the post. To be clear, all three teams are trending downward. Montreal just fired all their staff - and Calgary, well, they have Tanev and Markstrom for the next little bit. If things are to play out normally, minus these big losing streaks, I don't think any of these teams are playoff bound. -

Now you're just arguing for the sake of arguing. Despite this, they're only 2 points ahead, with 3 games in hand. What a massive improvement there Shiro. They're doing just as bad as we are! Look at our offence - it's comparable to the Jets. Our team defence and/or coaching is the issue. -
Update: 3/29/21 - So Calgary has essentially squandered whatever games in hand they had. Montreal has six games in hand, which is ridiculous. Safe to say Tanev/Markstrom wasn't that big of a loss short term, even though Tanev/Markstrom aren't the reasons for CAL's collapse. Just comes to show you that you can't buy your way out of a decline. This is just a sample of the opinions that don't look very smart after about a month. Notice where Montreal and Calgary stand - marginally above us, despite our 'major' setback this offseason. Long term, letting Tanev/Markstrom go was the right decision. Whoever the next GM is, they need to get rid of the current coaching staff and let the contracts expire so the team can start relatively fresh. Unlike Montreal and Calgary, we don't have their long-term contracts. So much for them being "cup contenders". Benning's made plenty of mistakes, such as keeping on WD and TG (and staff). This roster's a lot better than what these coaches are getting out of. Stale systems, mind-numbing roster decisions, and no adaptation. Once we get a set of proven NHL coaches, I'm sure this team will do a lot better next year.
-
CDC is really strange. People have been against signing players to long-term contracts, all the while being rah-rah about how Calgary improved by adding in Tanev and Markstrom who are both signed to long terms. It seems people want to bash Benning, but contradict themselves at the same time. LOL. I'm all for bashing certain people if they deserve it, but you must make a good case. I think our hindsight will eventually lead us to think that we did the right thing this off-season. Coaching staff has to go and there needs to be a major overhaul of the roster, especially when the contracts expire.
-
Calgary's not doing that hot. Maybe, just maybe, your bias is shining through. You know what's funny? For all the slagging Benning gets for this offseason for NOT SIGNING LONG TERM CONTRACTS, Montreal and Calgary are stuck with long contracts that have marginally improved their team. Which is it, CDC? Should Benning commit long term contracts for players like Tanev/Markstrom and make the mistake of Eriksson all over again? OR not sign them and still get bashed for it? CDC doesn't seem to be able to make up its mind. Armchair GMing is glorious on here.
-
Sometimes the hate on CDC is just so irrational. Clouter had some great seasons.
-
a lot better. Just because our coaches don't play them doesn't mean they're bad. Gadj and Lind - funny you don't mention them - are ripping it up in the AHL right now. Podkolzin is playing in the KHL playoffs - just scored a goal yesterday. Arvid Costmar had a really good showing last tournament. Woo is in the AHL right now -- also doing really well. We NEVER had any prospects that we could speak of that could ostensibly step into the NHL in the foreseeable future.
-
This is what a discussion is. We can be critical about a situation, but to overlook certain things to push a narrative is just being dishonest. Benning has made plenty of mistakes that can be judged for itself. So if we're looking at that, we can. For example: keeping two rookie coaches like WD/TG. They are mediocre coaches when you think about their records. WD had an inferior roster and has a better win percentage than TG. That's just sad.
-
They are JUST finished paying off the long Dipietro contract. They also have had good depth, sprinkled throughout the years. They've also had a 1st overall in Tavares, who's now a Leaf. He walked by the way. We would be ENVIOUS if we had their depth. Anders Lee is a 6th round star. They totally flubbed 2014 though LOL. And they do have Barzal. Our equivalent of Boeser. Cizikas is/was also a good pick. We NEVER had a single player similar to the names I named above under Gillis.
-
You can't really make the comparison with other GMs because they've all been in different situations. And not many GMs have been screwed by their predecessors, with except to teams like Arizona. For example, making the comparison to Tampa Bay as a GM is totally unfair, given how good they've been set up for success.
