  1. It's scary that you don't see how much better Benning is, compared to Gillis, with respect to drafting/developing.
  2. Did we even have a player with the same calibre as Hoglander under Gillis? Late round gems are what they are - hard to find. Did we have any late round gems under Gillis? No? Your point is really weak. Gillis had no depth. Meanwhile, we have several good AHL players that are almost ready for prime time. We have a good goalie in DiPietro. Have we ever had a player be represented at the world Juniors under Gillis? 7 years, because Gillis screwed the pooch.
  3. A coaching change will be too late at this stage anyway, even if it was implemented. I'm guessing everyone's going to lose their job next season: Benning, Green, Baumer, and maybe Brown. A new GM is going to come in and put his replacements - it's definitely an exciting time to send in your resumes.
  4. All I'm saying is that if it takes seven years to get to this point, that means the damage caused by Gillis has been long lasting and substantial. This doesn't absolve Benning at all. All I'm saying is that if you look at the drafting and developing history of Gillis and the rosters he put together, minus that really good year, he really screwed this team. Look at the number of NTCs he handed out, as well as the Grabner + 1st round pick for Ballard, who by the way was bought out. We only have Horvat from his regime, who was acquired by trading Schneider. Remember when Horvat had skating issues when he was drafted? Can you imagine the further destruction of the team had he not improved drastically? Asset management is a joke around these parts, but it's true.
  5. And the excuses for Green continues... If we're going to make excuses, what is Benning to do when you have an owner that rightfully wants to pursue playoffs, while having a team that has been labelled as stale with no prospects on the way? Gillis. For all the things he did well, he surely wrecked the future of this team, resulting in a long stagnant period.
  6. I never said Benning wasn't on the hot seat. By that logic, Treliving and Benning are in similar situations. Both GMs made significant splashes in FA, in different ways. The Tanev/Markstrom signings are going to anchor Calgary for the next few years. I'm not saying this to diss Tanev and Markstrom. They deserved the money.
  7. I didn't defend him. I think he's indefensible on a number of fronts, but scapegoating him is oversimplifying the overall situation. I blame Gillis for this situation, even though he's been long gone. This happens when you squander your draft picks and fail to develop any meaningful players In your system.
  8. Lucic and James Neal got 6M too. It was market price. Understand what it means and then we'll start talking.
  9. Yes, I'm afraid cleaning house is a necessity. It's pretty clear that Green's not going to be extended, and the assistant coaches should be relieved. Benning might get reassigned to head of scouting or something. Maybe Weisbrod will step in as GM.
  10. Eriksson absolutely deserved 6 million at the time of his signing. Was it the right signing for the Canucks in hindsight? Clearly no. Beagle wasn't overpaid by 2 million - that's a huge exaggeration. And I will bring it back to the depth issue - we literally had no reliable depth when Benning took over. I'm not saying that Benning should be excused on this matter, but this situation should be taken into some consideration. Gillis did a lot more damage to this team than one would realize. Also, it doesn't help that the Canucks used rookie coaches throughout this time. WD had one good season. So did Green last season. But their flaws were pretty well exposed, particularly WD's overplaying of veteran and fringe players... IMO, Gillis should deserve more blame for this mess. No prospects/prospect development. No identity. Maybe the owner deserves blame for trying to cling onto the last playoff run, even though the Sedins did not have a replacement.
  11. I didn't say that Benning doesn't deserve blame. But the coach who makes questionable coaching decisions SHOULD be held to some responsibility as well.
  12. Eriksson was not washed up at the time of his signing. That's revisionist history. Beagle was well respected in Washington - and a fan favourite, fresh off a cup win. Myers was a well-sought after FA. Signed on the first day because he wanted to come home. I get that you want to put some scapegoats in, but they have to make sense though.
  13. I dunno, these stats are pretty damn good though. Very consistent. https://www.nhl.com/player/braden-holtby-8474651 Formatting is off. WSH 54 54 34 16 0 4 1,648 153 2.99 1,495 .907 0 3,067:48 2018-2019 WSH 59 58 32 19 0 5 1,795 160 2.82 1,635 .911 3 3,406:34 2019-2020 WSH 48 47 25 14 0 6 1,385 142 3.11 1,243 .897 0 2,743:10
  14. Given how the defence plays every night, would you really be surprised? Grade A chances given up.
  15. Hasn't changed since last year at all. That's on Baumer. Green's problem is that he's unable to adapt,or motivate the team to play better. He's been benching/scratching the wrong players, but in reality, Green's been too much a kitten to scratch a veteran player, with exception to Eriksson. And on Eriksson, WD and Green should be considered as smoking guns as to his decline. Both of these coaches have near identical stats, despite the major differences in the rosters.
  16. With Ian Clarke's help and the bet that Holtby would bounce back, pretty damn high. It's not a bad signing. His bad game tonight wasn't good, sure, but all goalies have had bad games - including Markstrom.
  17. We needed a reliable goalie, just in case. If we signed some schmuck for 1 million and Demko falters, will you blame Benning? LOL. Demko's a new starting goalie. You have to insulate him with some veterans. We cannot afford to ruin his confidence and progression with subpar goaltending. Plus, we needed an attractive goalie for expansion purposes.
  18. As usual, management gets the blame, but we've seen Coach Green's system over the years. This should not have been a surprise to anyone with the loss of Markstrom and Tanev. Green's system is the EXACT same as last year.
  19. I'm a fan of this team, but hasn't been a fan of the coaching for quite some time. I'd really like to see this roster play under a "structurally" sound coach. There's just too much talent being wasted by unproven coaches.
