[Signing] Flames re-sign Jonathan Huberdeau
Dazzle replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Come on bros. Why are we lying to ourselves when we can CLEARLY see that this is not the case? This is an example of how bias makes people just ignore facts. LOL. Huberdeau had 115 points last year, whereas Miller got 99 for his career year. Huberdeau is much closer to being a point per game than Miller is. How can people say Huberdeau is worse than Miller? That is categorically false. -

Apparently, some people here are totally ok with Miller walking to FA, instead of trading him for assets. -
The Hypocrisy in the Media and the Fanbase about the New Regime
Dazzle replied to Dazzle's topic in Canucks Talk
So doesn't this say a lot about the state of the Gillis period that you'd have to rebuild, but Benning chose not to (or was mandated not to)? People say the Gillis period didn't have a roster that was stale. If we're looking at statistics, the team does go on to play a couple more years at a top level. But after that, the Canucks started to flail at the bottom. -
In hindsight, people will often say anything to make themselves look smarter than in the past. Had Virtanen worked out and became a superstar, passing him on would make people point the finger at the GMs who passed him by.
-
The hypocrisy was never addressed. People are just restating their opinions.
-
How does one interview make you feel like this is refreshing? I guarantee that anyone else who comes in and talks about the team would sound refreshing if they are not Benning. That doesn't mean that anything is necessarily happening.

The Hypocrisy in the Media and the Fanbase about the New Regime

They could surely rebuild then if it's so terrible. Oh wait, does that go against the logic that it's so terrible then? There's always a choice to rebuild. -
[Signing] Flyers re-sign Zack MacEwen
Dazzle replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Macewen was forever under Green's doghouse. Green sucked as a coach. -

If you're getting paid millions of dollars, you are succeeding. -
"Some of us fans" Oh? You're a fan? Maybe you're part of those "fans" that thought the Sedins held the Canucks back. Your expectations for players are incredibly impractical. If you're looking for the "best" in every category, such as "best center" (whatever that means), you will not be able to balance the salary cap. The whole purpose of management is not to look for THE best in every single position, but to manage it so that you can ice the most competitive team you can, given the constraints of the salary cap. I really wonder if you've ever run a business before or done something in management. There will never really be a 'best' - just the best one for you.
-
What a terrible take and you should feel ashamed. "Deficiencies" are a part of everyone. Not everyone is going to be good at everything. I can see that some of your deficencies are having empathy and being reasonable.
-
That's two, sure, but we did have Hughes, Pettersson, Podkolzin. It's a weak point.
-
Holy Since when did our first round picks get "rushed", aside from Virtanen? Juolevi wasn't rushed. He just had a freak ton of injuries/covid. Totally unlucky. Other than that, I'm reallyyyyyyyyyyy not sure which prospect was "rushed". And it's a little hilarious that you make this kind of statement after this new regime makes their first round selection.

We have heard many arguments that Benning sucked as a GM. Many articles have fleshed this angle out, so we don't need to drill on this before. The hypocrisy comes in when you have articles like this: https://canucksarmy.com/2022/03/07/canucks-backing-themselves-corners-roster-movement-fixing-one-biggest-issues-benning-era/ The Canucks are no longer backing themselves into any corners on roster movement, fixing one of the biggest issues of the Benning Era What? This article from Mar 2022 ended up being very wrong; we would be even more cornered than we were with cap space, given the latest free agent signings. The article was partially right though. No one would know what JR/Allvin would do. I don't know if anyone expected the Canucks to do nothing in the TDL. Despite the long-winded criticisms about the roster being not good enough, JR has just recently said in his interview that the defense was good enough. That makes perfect sense why he did nothing. I guess all along we have been sold a lie that Benning was this horribly incompetent managemenr. We are now in a much better state under JR/Allvin now, right? Much of this sentiment has been echoed or perpetuated by the media now. The roster which was said to be poorly constructed is almost the exact same one as what JR/Allvin has now. Our team played so poorly last season under Green, but dramatically resurged under Boudreau. Is the name of the GM that much of an influence in our drastic shift of opinions? Maybe it was a coaching issue from the very beginning which Benning never considered. People who say it's a night and day difference under JR are just lying to themselves. The roster has basically remained the same. We have not collected additional draft picks. AND we are potentially talking about tying ourselves up with a long term contract because we have always loved our players too much. What will it take for people to realize that this is just a re-tooled version of Benning's team? How can we really say that JR 'put his stamp' on this team despite making no roster changes? In order for us to make further changes, we'll have to sell low with our players from now on to free cap space. JR has essentially handcuffed himself by not unloading JT Miller and addressing the so-called holes of this roster. Maybe this is an ownership issue, NOT the personnel one. We are unfortunately backed into a corner, contrary to the overly optimistic article above. Maybe the media has no freaking clue what they're talking about and are just pushing narratives.

JR had the carte blanche to the change the roster, did he not? I thought the narratives were about JR not wanting to come into a situation that he would not have control over. Was that not the supposed attractive parts of the Canucks? Now we are still where we were, with the addition of two new players. I like them, honestly. But if the Benning team so trash, why did we do nothing to change it? TDL - nothing Draft - nothing - not even collecting draft picks. We are even lower in cap space than when we started.
-
This is such a silly excuse. EVERYONE has been tied to the cap. What did JR/Allvin do with the cap that they did have? They signed a free agent. It's not a horrible signing and I do think it'll be one to watch for next season in a good way. That being said... we keep saying that there's a vision to compete in 2-3 years. Guess what? Benning's rosters were under the exact same assumption. All this talk about Benning not assembling good rosters, etc, apparently has been validated by JR, one that has been praised way too quickly by this fanbase, despite doing zilch to the roster. I'm not sugarcoating the previous regime. I'm saying it's hypocritical to say JR/Allvin are so amazing because they have done so little to the EXACT SAME ROSTER that has been deemed problematic by the fanbase when Benning was still around. You say people are choosing to play here under JR, but we had people CHOOSING to play in Vancouver under Benning too (i.e. OEL, quite literally the best example considering he ONLY waived his NTC for Vancouver or Boston). Therefore, this narrative that JR is making hockey enjoyable in Vancouver is just a confirmation bias. How exactly is it "night and day"? The only difference was cleaning out the staff. There's been no movement with regards to trades, and EVEN JR has acknowledged the defense was good enough as it is. Huh? I thought the narrative was that the defensive core was poorly constructed when Benning was around? Keep in mind, NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE so far to change the roster from last season. Are we now making excuses just because we want to praise the new GM?
-
We really need to re-examine the criticism of Benning. For a GM that has been oddly praised by this fanbase as refreshing, JR/Allvin sure didn't do much (if at all) to improve the deficient roster. Aside from a large staff shuffle and the signing of two free agents, neither of which I oppose, Allvin/JR sure hasn't addressed the defense. Remember how people criticized the defense being not good enough, now we suddenly see JR assessing that this defense is good enough. Poolman is a good solid defenseman, according to JR. In short, the defense is not the issue. So what's wrong with Benning's roster? They say that Benning cornered himself with trades, even though the flat cap was also a factor in him being handcuffed. Suddenly JR is saying that the cap is preventing GMs such as himself from doing anything. But wait, he could've traded Miller, could he have not? This not only would've freed cap space, but also allowed the team to improve the depth. Instead, we're basically getting a retooled version of last year's team which started out pretty bad under Green, but improved significantly when Boudreau was in. So this begs the question - was Benning's assembled roster really as poor as this fanbase claims? JR certainly doesn't think it's crap because he didn't address much of the supposed weaknesses of this roster. Secondly, is Allvin/JR really that much different than Benning from before? There is an unacknowledged hypocrisy about criticizing last season's roster, but there's a muted response given the lack of changes. If defense was such a priority, they wouldn't have signed two Russian free agents, no? Remember how the past GM was criticized for being too tight on the cap? JR/Allvin is doing nothing to relieve that. Something's gotta give with this roster and we are probably going to get a diminished return in exchange for cap space, if there's even such a thing as a return in this situation.

[Signing] Ducks sign Olli Juolevi
Dazzle replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
This is such a stupid joke. Juolevi was proven NOT TO BE the gamer addict. That rumour had swirled just after he was drafted. The kid never stood a chance here. -

You suck.

I don't have the time to pick out every single part of his argument, so I'll address some of them. You better be reading @DSVII His argument that Edler can't be used as damning evidence of Gillis is beyond silly. Edler is the oldest part of that core, which LOGICALLY should have been addressed earlier than any other roster player. The fact that Gillis COULDN'T draft/develop a single defenseman beyond Hutton demonstrates a failure that DSV doesn't want to admit. That in itself is a weakness of his argument, and not evidence that this is a "well put together argument". He also talks about this part:
And Markstrom and Tanev were a Gillis pieces. You know, the shutodwn D and goalie that was propping up his teams that ranked consistently in the low 20s in high danger chances against.
Response Yes, they were GIllis pieces, but Luongo/Edler were somebody else's pieces. So was Kesler, the Sedins, and so forth - none of which Gillis found replacements for, nor did he engineer any kind of trade where he could get some future picks back.
Why are you spending so much time and energy defending a GM whose time here directly benefited every other team in our division but us I'll never know.
Response: This is actually a false statement. How exactly did Benning "directly benefitted every other team"? It makes no sense at all. If Benning's roster sucks, it's just one team. How does it "directly benefit" every team? If Benning's trading sucks, how many trades did he actually make that was a net positive gain for Edmonton/Calgary, so forth. That's why his statement here is illogical.
Just Bo Horvat is all i need to counter that ridiculous statement. And Benning hasn't been filling the farm team either....name a prospect in the last eight years outside of Demko who is going to graduate to the main team. Rathbone, that's it.
Response: Bo Horvat, if I should remind him and others, was ONLY obtained by trading a KNOWN commodity in Schneider for an UNKNOWN 9th pick. Horvat had skating issues at the time, which he was able to address, but things would turn out VERY differently had Schneider turned into a superstar goalie, and Horvat turning into a bust.
You know what's a bigger failure? Whiffing on two picks in the top 10, especially a 5th overall.
Response: Virtanen was in a draft where many of the first round picks ended up being duds. Dal Colle was a particularly bad pick, as well as Fleury (the defenseman). Olli Juolevi was plagued with injuries and COVID. I'm not sure how one can predict that kind of outcome, considering Juolevi DID win at every level, from the Memorial Cup to the Gold Medal team for Finland at the WJC.
A Gillis draft miss mathematically does not have the same weight as a Benning draft miss because Benning was always drafting in the top part of the round during his time here
Response: This is a foolish comparison. Gillis threw away three first round picks (Gaunce/Jensen/25th pick in the Grabner trade, ALONG with Grabner, who was also a first rounder, for Ballard, who Gillis ended up buying out. This doesn't include the multiple second round picks that he threw away in trades, namely the Derek Roy trade. He also traded away his second most successful defenseman (who never played for the Canucks) in Kevin Connauton. This leaves Gillis with: Horvat, Hutton, and Hodgson as draft successes. Yikes.
Benning has lost a way more value at the draft than Gillis from his whiffs.
Benning drafted Demko - starting goalie - using a 2nd round pick that Gillis kept flubbing. So the argument that Benning had the privilege of high picks is trash. He also has Rathbone, a promising defenseman that Gillis never had in his system. What about Hoglander? Another second round pick. Other possible NHLers: Jett Woo (2nd round pick). We also have Silovs, again, a promising goalie that never existed under Gillis' regime. Gillis is remembered for his playoff wins, and not much else. His legacy for poor draft picks and draft development SHOULD NOT be ignored.
-
Not really. There are plenty of holes in that argument. It just depends on what you want to believe, and I honestly think that's the problem. People WANT to hate Benning, but won't acknowledge the failures of Gillis. That's a bias. I have acknowledged Gillis' successes, but his failures are also worth mentioning in the same breath.

It's hard to explain why the texts had continued after the supposed abuse. Apparently the continued texts were used as evidence against the girl.

The justice system didn't let down THIS woman. Her story was too hard to prove, given the long lapses of time, as well as evidence, some which had apparently contradicted her accusations.

You need to rein in your bias.
