Similarly, someone being guilty doesn't necessarily mean they're "guilty". There are enough wrong convictions not to go all-in on a belief just because of a verdict. Virtanen is found not guilty because the girl couldn't prove her story, period. That might mean that he did do the things she said, or it could also mean that her story was full of lies. Simply sticking to your core beliefs that Virtanen is a $&!#ty person is blinding you from the POSSIBILITY that Virtanen didn't sexual assault the girl, regardless of his poor reputation.
-
Let's be totally fair - Virtanen really didn't play to his potential. He didn't make the right decisions on and off the ice. He put himself into a position that just screwed himself more than anything else. That being said, the amount of bias against Virtanen BEFORE the case developed affects the perception of this guy. Some people didn't want to be seen as "defending the sexual assaulter", even though this had yet to be proven. Some people really WANTED Jake to be guilty because they hate his off-ice persona. The problem with the girl's story was that she set herself up for failure. She reported much too late (regardless of the circumstances about why that happened, whether it was feeling shame, etc). Then her perspective of the events could not possibly line up with the accusations. As someone pointed out, if one were to be traumatized, they would not want to re-live it again, among other things. Moreover, she kept texting him too, apparently, which really doesn't make sense. Some people will see this as 'proof' that women aren't being listened to, which could still very well be the case. But as long as people don't rein in their bias, we will trying to fit our conclusions with how we want things to be, and that's wrong, regardless of what Virtanen did or didn't do.

Puhleeze. Edler was from the NONIS period. Good god, he was the oldest piece from the roster before anyone, so what kind of revisionism are YOU talking about? He missed every single draft pick, minus the several ones I already listed. That in itself is a BIG failure, one which you've seemed to downplay. Instead, the so-called development issue which you've reasonably criticized is not really mentioned at all with Gillis. Gillis did start with a farm team, but he didn't really fill any of those teams with developing prospects (because he flubbed a lot of them). You give far too much credit to the playoff successes that I already mentioned. His CORE was from other people. Sure he lucked out with Samuelsson, etc etc, among other players, but when it came down to Gillis having to make his own core (i.e. through the draft picks/prospects that HE picked), you can see how bad he really was. You're giving credit to Gillis for the heavy work that other GMs did. When Gillis was fired, the team was honestly the worst state it had ever been in for a long, long time. No young prospects whatsoever, and a bunch of players that neither move the needle on the roster. I remember the Willie D period. Yes, those rosters were trash.

Just saying, the Canucks could've had a trade like this to address their apparent roster issues. People whine about how Benning this or that to the roster, but JR hasn't done all that much to address those very issues. Instead, we made a splash at free agency and we have even less space, plus we are supposedly trying to re-sign Miller. I've got nothing against re-signing Miller, but if that's the case, we are essentially re-doing the same mistakes that were done from the previous regime. People celebrated way too early at Benning's firing and were blindly cheering on JR's moves, even though nothing of significance was really done. Honestly, I think JR/Allvin is doing fine because the roster isn't nearly as bad as people say it is, but this fanbase is so hypocritical.

What great team? The team he inherited was not upgraded. Despite the emergence of Markstrom and Tanev under Gillis, as well as Horvat, we did not see a replacement for Edler, nor a goaltender in the pipeline (that was traded away for Horvat, who was a high first round pick). Then we saw him throw away Grabner AND a 1st for Ballard, who was later bought out by Gillis himself. Then we two second round picks thrown away for Derek Roy, a discarded defenseman in Connaughton, and complete whiffs with Niklas Jensen, Brendan Gaunce, and the "great" Alexandre Mallet with the second round pick as his first pick that year (he traded away his first). Gillis didn't "build" a good team, contrary to the narrative. He added some pieces to a pre-existing core, but when THAT core became stale, Gillis had no replacement. He had: a declining Sedins, a disgruntled Kesler, an equally disgruntled and perplexed Luongo, along with Markstrom and Tanev. When he was fired, it was clear that the team was barren with prospects, with exception to maybe Shinkaruk. Gillis is freaking awful when you actually look at the stuff that he couldn't do, not the playoff stuff that people remember him for.

https://canucksarmy.com/2022/07/24/honourable-mentions-2022-vancouver-canucks-prospects-list/ Jett Woo, RD, 21 years old, 6’0″, 205 lbs We’ve been on a downward trend with Jett Woo for a year or so now. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below The good news is that he is still only 21 years old and has a chance to find his footing in the AHL this season under new head coach Jeremy Colliton. Woo battled injuries last season and did show some signs of improvement when it came to his most glaring weaknesses — which were skating and puck-handling. Jett Woo takes a shot from Bryce Kindopp after the whistle then lets Kindopp know how unacceptable that was#AbbyCanucks #Canucks pic.twitter.com/OtgbKbs1at — Cody Severtson (@CodySevertson) April 9, 2022 There were a handful of games early in the season where Woo was playing some of the best hockey we have ever seen from him but his progress was derailed by COVID and an injury that kept him out of the lineup for seven weeks. Woo will need to continue to improve on his skating to be able to get to the NHL. His physicality was apparent in his rookie season but he seemed to take a bit of a step back or not necessarily make improvements in his sophomore season as a pro. We need to see a big year in his third pro season to get him back into the top-10 rankings.

There was never a 'rebuilding phase'. There was a retooling one, and that's largely because Benning (or Aquilini) didn't go the direction of rebuilding, so I'm not really sure what you're talking about. Does it warrant criticism? Sure, but calling it a rebuilding phase is a really poor observation. He didn't trade assets to "rebuild". How could you call it a rebuilding one? And using that terminology, by having to rebuild, it means Gillis' era, failed, no? You don't rebuild off a succesful era, yet Gillis' tenure resulted in a total loss of young prospects because of his poor development and draft, but leaving no real assets to do a full rebuild. Gillis didn't set up the next GM for success, that's for sure.

No, it's clear that you're going by what you read about him, not what is ACTUALLY going on. You don't seem to realize that Woo, as a young defenseman, was edged out by vets because they were lacking forwards, but not defenseman. You could look at it like regression, but Woo was used as a forward, which is better than being scratched, no? Get this, as a forward, he played some decent minutes and did an ok job too, particularly on the PK. It's clear that you're ignoring evidence, Johnson says (but we'll have to see if this is the case) that Woo will continue to develop as a defenseman in the next season. This is what he literally says in the interview. You choose to look at it in a twisted manner, but that's on you. The next season has yet to happen, but you seem to have all the answers that a 21 year old is a bust. Lmfao. We can simply look at how you're observing the situation to see that you're inherently biased, to the point that a well-fleshed discussion wouldn't be possible. You say I have an "obvious homer bias", but you have yet to explain why a 21 year old in your view is about the same as a 25 year old in the AHL. Why should I think of you as worthy of a serious discussion on it? You don't even know what you're talking about. You just have an opinion and you're sticking to it, regardless of what the other perspectives are lol. That's not a discussion. That's you talking to your mirror.
-
That's the thing though. You're changing the goalposts now. Alf erroneously calls Benning the "worst era" in hockey a fact, which is in fact an opinion. It's neither a fact nor a correct opinion because the worst era in hockey was in the 70s when the Canucks were virtually unwatchable. They were the worst team in the league and the only thing it had going for it was the fighting. That CANNOT possibly be better than Benning's teams, where they actually had some youngsters make the team, such as Pettersson and Boeser.

The thing is, when Woo was drafted, his offense kind of sucked, but he was a big punishing defender. Then in his +1 year, his offense took a step up, which was pretty promising. Obviously COVID changed things for a lot of players and as you said, he was supplanted by vets, which show he still has a lot of learning to do at the AHL. My point out of this is that he'll probably be the next NHL guy to make it, which is not wrong to say because he is JUST 21 years old and Ryan Johnson said he'll be doing more development next year as a defender. Of course, the poster above said this is essentially coddling the player so his confidence doesn't get shot
-
Well, apparently you thought he was a bust already at 21, so what's there to talk about? This is the kind of bias I'm pointing out from people like you. You're obviously wrong to call a 21 year old a 'bust', and I can see that no matter what the evidence against you, you won't change your mind. This is beyond stupid. Lmfao.

[Signing] Kings re-sign Gabriel Vilardi
Dazzle replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
People were oozing about this guy, and then we watched him drop in the draft... People were screaming about this dude being passed over. And yeah, he had skating concerns... In the end, this guy is still trying to prove himself in the league. Maybe people need to temper their expectations, hey? -
Woo was/is a good pick. He's such a physical defenseman, one that Judd Brackett was particularly excited about. I thought people automatically loved Brackett picks, or are we forgetting to do that now, as time passes by? If so, this just means that people aren't even paying attention to anything else about the player himself
-
Woo is 21 years old, bub. You are one of the those people who just ignore evidence to push a preexisting narrative. Ryan Johnson says that Woo was put on forward to make use of Woo's other skills. This was a learning opportunity for the player, in light of the fact that they had too many D. You COULD say that Woo wasn't good enough last year, but Johnson says that Woo will be back on D after this year. So no, he's not a "bust" lmfao. A bust is only a bust when he's out of the league.

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Dazzle replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings

People were so ready to move on from Benning, without properly assessing the entirety of the situation. I'm talking about the bias. Once again, we love a player so much that we box ourselves into the corner because of cap space, without knowing when to let go of an asset when it's at the highest peak.
-
Unfortunately, this is a trade that the Canucks have never really had the balls to do. We have always kept our players because we love them too much, rather than get a good return. Matthew Tkachuk was worth a lot, but there were rumours that he wasn't going to re-sign. Miller should have been traded for a king's ransom.
-
Yes. There's not enough attention paid on this. The girl literally admits that she was part of this toxic arrangement. She can't sue Katz directly, but she can sue her parents, yes? Why didn't she?

Lawsuit Against Hockey Canada/CHL (2018 World Junior Team)

If this board was about "censorship", your criticism about the mods would've resulted in a ban. People nowadays, such as yourself, throw around terms like "censorship" without having any clue about what it actually means.
