  1. If it bumps up to around 85 million, it changes the game plan. Especially if Loui does retire, gives us solid space to sign everyone that we need to.
  2. Was watching as well in the background. Pretty tight games. 1 - 0 in overtime. Tryamkin's team has yet to score a goal in this series.
  3. We're not seeing this that differently, but let me address one thing at a time. 1. Sedins - we would never force them to waive, it was always intended that they retire as Canucks. They put their whole careers in here, they did a lot for the city and they earned the right to stay and retire as Canucks unless they came forward and requested the right to chase the cup one last time. I'm sure that question was asked, but I'm also sure that they ended it. 2. Edler - See #1. He earned the right to say no. 3. With either 1 or 2, if we had put them on waivers, they would have been claimed by other teams. They would never make it to Utica, and because of how much they did here for the team, we would never have taken that step with them. Even now, if we had waived Edler a month ago, he would have been claimed by someone chasing the cup. 4. Eriksson is a different case. YES, you are absolutely right that he could try and stick it out and still get paid. However, after his bonus is paid this summer, he would only make 1 million to spend the rest of the season in Utica. This is key to the idea that he will choose to retire. By the time you factor in living expenses etc, with how much he has earned, I personally don't think he'll do it, I think he'll take retirement, hopefully the Canucks make the option easier for him by offering him a position with the team. The point is, There's absolutely no reason why we wouldn't park LE in Utica next season. Is 1 million enough for him to live with that? I still believe that there was a handshake deal in place at the start of the season, and that's why he's spent most of this year in the Pressbox and not in Utica. 5. Gillis was not the worst GM this team ever had, but I would rank Benning much higher. Gillis had a unique approach and made some interesting decisions, but at the end of the day, he inherited MOST of the core that went to the cup. He made some good moves, he made some bad moves, same as any GM, and he did get fairly good value on guys resigning here. 6. Benning, will deal with him separately, has been a good GM for this team, he took over a team that was had very little in the pipeline for prospects. Like any GM, he has strengths and weaknesses. I think he's an average trader, but he is an unbelievable judge of potential in young players. He's made some mistakes on signing free agents, LE being one of them, but its hard to find a GM in this league who hasn't. Look at Bobrovsky in FL, and the contract that Lucic signed in Edmonton, just as a couple. GM's are pushed to make their teams better, and they make decisions based on. Eriksson was a gamble, but based on his past history with the Sedins, and coming off a 30 goal season, I can understand the rational of signing him. Its just unfortunate that it wasn't longer term. Finishing on Ferland, if he's healthy, he makes us a team that's harder to play against. I believe that Benning was looking for someone who could really fill in where Dorsett left off, and provide us with that extra edge to our game that makes other teams not want to play you. Again, if he spends the rest of his contract on LTIR, its unfortunate, but it doesn't really hurt us. If he can recover and become an asset for us again, we're better with him in the lineup.
  4. On Ferland, there was a lot of people on this board who thought that Ferland would sign for 5 - 5.5 million and that would price him out of our range. If you look at his production the last 2 years in the NHL, in Carolina and in Calgary, 40ish points 17 - 21 goals, who plays an abrasive style, that's a 5 - 5.5 million player on the UFA market in today's NHL. Unfortunately for him, his concussion issue drove his value down. Again, his contract doesn't hurt us if he's on LTIR Again on Edler, he had full NTC on that last contract. It was widely reported that the Canucks approached him and asked if he wanted to chase the cup, he said NO. Unless you think you can force a guy with a full NTC to move when he says he won't I'm not sure what you expect here. I know a lot of lawyers who will tell you that you can't do anything, I'm pretty sure the NHLPA would agree. Eriksson is a bad contract. I'm sure Benning would be much happier if he had pushed for 3 or 4 years, but it is what it is. There is reason to believe that Eriksson will retire after his bonus is paid, but there is ZERO evidence, but there's a lot of things that make sense about this theory. #1. No team in this league will trade for him. #2. The Canucks do have the option to send him to Utica, and its more likely that they would do that instead of buy him out this summer. If they were to buy him out, he would still have a bigger hit on our cap than if he was demoted and assigned. #3. It was widely reported that he came here and wanted 6 years for stability for his family through school years. If you add up these facts, it makes it more likely that the best option for Loui is to just retire. I do believe that the reason that he hasn't been sent down this year is because they have a handshake agreement that he retires this summer if he is unable to make an impact in the NHL, which he clearly hasn't. Regarding Gillis, I think he would have been much better suited to the job of President than GM. As GM, he gave out NTC's like tic tacs and tied up flexibility on the team for years. Benning was clear when he came in, that he was completely comfortable in asking guys to waive their NTC, but again, if they say no, you have no option. You can make an argument for assigning Eriksson as he clearly doesn't belong in the NHL any longer and it would be really hard for anyone to dispute that. You can't do the same with a player who is performing. You run the risk of losing them to waivers etc.
  5. They want Rafferty playing top pairing minutes in Utica. Additionally, both Brisebois and Chatfield have some NHL games, so considering we're pushing for playoffs, they are going for best overall experience.
  6. Yes, Ferland was out with concussion issues last season, and its why he signed for 3.5 million instead of 5 - 5.5 million. His condition was reviewed with team doctors before he signed here. Again, if he never plays another game and just stays on LTIR, it doesn't hurt us, the same as Dorsett didn't hurt us when he had to stay on LTIR for the duration of his contract and then retire. My personal opinion on Ferland is: #1, he wasn't fully over concussion from last season, but symptoms didn't really resurface until that fight. #2. For his family, he should probably stop playing and just stay on LTIR. As for Edler, he held a FULL NTC, not even a modified one. That full NTC was given to him by Mike Gillis, near the end of his term in Vancouver. So, based on the fact that he had a full NTC, where exactly do you see the "leverage" to trade Edler?
  7. Edler drops off, Pearson drops off, we have other guys getting replaced from Utica with lower ELC contracts. Podkolzin will be here replacing someone who has a higher dollar value contract with one that's 925k. Plus, new broadcasting agreement kicks in which will give a more significant increase to the cap. I'm not saying it won't be tight. Most of the teams who are trying to go after a cup, have little room against the cap. I think EP and Hughes are about 11 million each.
  8. I'm guessing, but I think 6 - 6.5 is realistically what he would sign for if he wound up coming here. I would guess 4 - 5 year term. Now, the predictions I made, aren't necessarily what I think we should do, its how I think summer will play out. Time will tell if I'm right or not.
  9. So, if someone were to start a Change.org petition that encourages Loui to retire this summer, what would that classify under within Change.org? These are the options that they have: Environment: His play kind of stinks the last couple of seasons, so I guess there's always that angle Animals: I don't think he kicks dogs or anything, but I'm sure he's not good for Fin's overall health Health: I think there's a mental health angle, we'll all be much happier fans if he's not on the team or the books anymore Human Rights: Ummmmm....rights to watch good, motivated hockey? Is that a stretch??? Economic Justice: Well, 36 million for 38 goals, almost a million per goal, that has to break some type of law you would think! Local: Kind of crosses over into a few of the above. Happier fans = less violent fans. Criminal Justice: Wellll, see Economic Justice and let's just extend that to highway robbery! Womens Rights: Again, happier fans = less domestic violence = less women cutting husbands brake lines = less traffic accidents = lower insurance rates. Politics: Can we link his retirement to Trumps reelection? Get rid of 2 bad things at once??? Education: He could take up a job teaching how to score MASSIVE contracts without actually scoring! That feeds the economy too!!!!!! Entertainment: I've yet to see that from Loui, but I keep hoping.... Immigration: Can anyone think of a way we can have him deported for non performance? LGBT Rights: I think this crosses over back to the whole happier fans = more tolerance for other. Anyone have any other idea on this one??? Technology: I got nothing here..... Other: Again, I got nothing.....ohhhh community improvement maybe??? Again, Happier fans = yada yada... What do you think guys? Maybe we can get some fans (cough) @Alflives, (cough, cough), manning a table in front of Rogers arena signing people to our petition???
  10. Maybe someone could start a Change.org petition that we can present to Loui at the end of the season, as fans, encouraging him to avoid the humiliation of being sent to Utica next season, just take this 3 million dollar cheque as a parting give and retire. Give him a team job in scouting or something. Would it have an impact if we got 100,000 fan signatures on it???
  11. Eriksson was coming off a 30 goal season and had shown considerable chemistry with the Sedins in World competition. That said, we should have only signed him for 4 seasons, but to come here, he wanted security that he would be stable while his kids were in school. I really believe that he will retire this summer after his next bonus. I don't see him as a buyout option this season as we would save more by sending him to Utica, a move that we have the right to do, but would undermine what Eriksson was trying to do, be in the same city as his family while they go through school. We have Leverage. Ferland, when he was healthy, he was starting to look pretty good here. If he's healthy next season great, if not, his 3.5 million per on LTIR, doesn't hurt us.
  12. Very true, but when take over a lineup that's riddled with guys who have NTC's, if they say they won't waive, you're kind of screwed. So, as easy as it is to say poor asset management, if you're stuck with someone who has an NTC and won't waive, how exactly are you proposing to handle that?
  13. Here's the changes I think this team goes through over the summer; Forward: Out: Eriksson - Retire after bonus paid. I think he knows that he's in Utica next season if he doesn't, and that's too far from where he's settled his family. I don't believe that he's a buyout option this summer, we would save more by sending him to Utica for a season and then buying him out next summer. Would actually work out better for us on the Cap. I think we have all the pressure for him to just call it a career and maybe pickup a position with the team. Sutter - I think he's actually still effective when healthy, but I think Benning will look to move him out and make more room Leivo - Like the guy, but I think they will opt for other guys from within at a cheaper cap hit. Baertschi - He'll either be packed in a trade or bought out. In: Toffoli - I think we resign him for about 6 million per season. He's looked good out there. MacEwan - I think he's on this team out of camp unless he really screws up in camp. Defense: - I think Benning wants to complete his makeover Out: Tanev - I think signs in Toronto. Could be wrong here, but I think if we haven't made a major move to sign him by now, the team is looking at other options Stecher - Would be sorry to see him leave, but I think he gets traded at the draft. Something along the lines of From Canucks: Stecher, 5th rounder, To Canucks 2nd Round pick. He's solid defense, but I think Benning wants to upgrade size and make us harder to play against in our own zone. Benn - Either flipped or sent to Utica in camp. We actually save slightly more in cap space by sending him to Utica for a season. In: Tyson Barrie - I think he wants to be in Vancouver, and I think Benning has tried to acquire him a few times. I think he signs here for somewhere around 6 - 6.5 million per. Benning wants more horsepower on defense and this would help provide it. Tryamkin - I think he signs here as soon as his season in Russia ends. He's the upgrade to Stecher, will help to cut down shots in the slot and make us much more intimidating to play against. I believe that Benning will chase him hard this month and bring him back. Juolevi - I believe that he will be on this team next year. I think they want him to finish in Utica and have one more summer of training, but I think he's going to round out our third pairing next season. Note: Fantenberg - I think we sign him back for around 1 million per, he's a good sound 7th D. He's probably peaked in capability, I think they will use him in the pressbox and on hand for injuries, and leave the kids (Rafferty, Woo, Rathbone, possibly Utinen) down in Utica to play bigger minutes and gain more experience. I think Rafferty is first call up. Goal - I think both Markstrom and Demko are back in net next season. With an estimate of 1 million increase in cap, I think we'll be able to do this, resign the guys that we need to and still have a little wiggle room. Although I hope I'm wrong, I think Ferland spends the rest of his contract and career on LTIR and then retires. About $15,735,000 out in contracts, should give us roughly 34,000,000 in cap space Contract breakdown Toffoli - 6 million Virtanen - 2.5 million Motte - 1.25 million Gaudette - 2.25 million MacEwan - 750k One Way (takes less for 1 way deal) Barrie - 6.5 million Tryamkin - 3.5 million (I might be a little high on this) Juolevi - Already signed, but would be his cap hit of 834k Fantenberg - 1 million Markstrom - 6 - 6.5 million Total roughly 30.585, plus returning, we should actually have about 3 million in space if we get the 1 million increase. This is approximately how I see it playing out, will be interested to see how close I am.
  14. That hit he did on Pacioretty should have been 10 games. He clearly directs his head into the post. Was clearly deliberate. Its Boston though, the league doesn't suspend players from Boston for the most part, just slap on the wrist unless they have no other choice.
  15. So, does anyone know how he played today?
  16. Everything crossed that we get him back before the end of the season.
  17. Not too worried. We started a road trip, JUST as Markstrom went down with Injury. We need a few days where Demko and the new guy can work with Clark and get their games back. I think this was more bad timing than anything. That said, I would have preferred that Benning went out at the deadline and added Miller from Anaheim for a solid veteran presence, but the asking price might have been too high. He had a modified trade list where he would submit 6 teams, maybe he really didn't want to be moved and submitted teams that would never trade for him.
  18. In general, Petterson is probably worth 2 x 1st on his own, so, yes, I'd make that trade. Schaller and Mazanec were contract dumps. Madden is an interesting prospect, but we don't know for sure how he will develop as far as ceiling. 2nd round pick has about 33% chance of having an NHL career of 100 games or more 3rd round pick is about 20% chance. Would be pretty happy to do that.
  19. Yeah, even worse. I have a feeling that our defense plays out as follows for next season: Benn - moved in off season Tanev - Signs in Toronto Barrie - Signs here Stecher - Traded at draft Tryamkin - Signs in Vancouver again Fantenberg - Signs in Vancouver - good depth guy New pairings: (in no particular order) Tryamkin/Hughes Edler/Myers Barrie/Juolevi Fantenberg I think they will give Rathbone and Woo time in Utica. First call ups - Rafferty, Brisebois This is just my best guess on how they do this.
  20. Fantenberg has been pretty good for a 850k addition. Benn, I was expecting more from. I don't think Rathbone will get a shot in Vancouver this season, unless we have a better buffer on a playoff spot. I really think we sign him when his season completes, but most likely to play in Utica.
  21. Its weird, a couple of years ago, Markstrom had a lot of issues with giving up a goal on the first shot of the game. Not sure what the Canucks did to get him through that.
  22. Remember, not all GM's are completely sane. They sometimes do strange and impulsive things.... But, again, the question that I posed wasn't, "Would they", it was, if you're Benning, what deal would make you look hard at accepting it.
