  1. That should be 10 games. A kick with a skate, you're talking something that could be construed (easily) as assault with a weapon. Just because Cernak wasn't injured, Kass is looking right at him, its nothing accidental, its a deliberate kick.
  2. Don't know how this can't be a suspension. REALLY dangerous play Really deliberate kicking motion.
  3. #1. Buying Loui out last summer would have been much more expensive on the cap. Yes, it should have been a shorter contract, but coming off a 30 goal season and having shown really good chemistry with the Sedin's, I understand why Benning gambled and signed him. All GM's have contracts that they wish they could time machine on, this is Benning's. Hopefully, Eriksson retires this summer, I believe there is a lot of reasons for him to do so. #2. If Brock is a .75 point per game guy at the end of his contract, 7.5 million isn't far off the going rate. Further, the amount in his final year, is the amount that we would have to qualify him for, not necessarily sign him for. So, we qualify him for 7.5 million for 1 year, doesn't mean that we can't/don't resign him for 6 years at an average cap hit of 6 - 6.5 million. #3. Miller wasn't a contract that Benning signed, but if you're referring to the trade to acquire him, I was one of the people who was all in on that one when the deal was announced. Yes, giving up a 1st kind of sucks, but its hard to find guys in the first round (past top 10), who had the qualifications that Miller had, and he's really delivered for us, exceeded all my expectations. #4. Myers at 6 x 6 was going rate, someone was going to give him that or more. There's risk in all contracts, all you can do is take your best shot at improving the team. #5. Ferland deal is not hurting us, and if he can recover, 3.5 million is really good value here. If he can't and has further injuries, then he will go back on LTIR, and very possibly retire, in which case, his cap hit doesn't matter any longer. #6. You are totally correct on Performance Bonus. It is a loop hole in the current CBA, that I'm positive that the NHL would like to address, but I'm pretty sure that the players like it this way. Most likely it will stay the way it is in the new CBA, maybe the NHL can do some type of trade off to build in some restrictions like signing bonus can only be X% of years salary. The players like it like this as it makes their contracts, largely immune to lockouts etc.
  4. There has been times where Benning and Linden have disagreed publicly. The most obvious one, was early in their tenure, when they were each asked about willingness to ask veterans to waive NTC's. Linden said "NO", Benning emphatically said, "YES", would do whatever was needed. I think they saw eye to eye on the type of team that they wanted the Canucks to be, but that they differed substantially on the path to get there. Linden was committed to playing youth only. Benning wanted youth sprinkled in with established veterans. I think Aqualini agreed with Benning's approach and might have done that too many times and Linden left as a result. That is just my take on it at least, but the math generally adds up.
  5. I think that Benning and Linden presented very different development paths for the team, with Linden objecting to the idea of adding too many UFA's, and that Aqua sided with Benning on bringing in help to compete faster. Personally, I think that Benning was correct in his approach and that he's done a good job and that Linden (love the guy) should have stuck to the higher management functions of President and trusted Benning to do what he was hired to do and what he's done. Create a fast, competitive team with youth developing under the guidance of selectively acquired veterans.
  6. I actually don't dispute that. I still believe that he will be gone before next season, I agree with @Alflives, on retirement, but I think for this season, as much as his contract is extreme over payment, if he was on a 1.5 million contract somewhere else, he'd probably be the type of guy that Benning would look at acquiring at the deadline for defensive depth.
  7. Really hope so, we could definitely use his energy. Just really hope that he's not risking too much be resuming his career.
  8. Not to cause controversy or anything, but did anyone else notice that during Linden's interview in the intermission, when he was talking about people in and around the team and his exit etc, the one person he completely didn't mention, was Benning. Seemed kind of weird since he hand picked Benning for GM to oversee the rebuild.
  9. One of my favorite movies. Have you seen that John Turturro is doing a stand alone movie for his character? The Jesus Rolls
  10. No question that it will be tight, but I really believe that Eriksson will retire after this season. He didn't really make this team this year, and although he's had a few stretches where he looks competent out there, they don't last. No other team is going to take Eriksson on trade as we saw last summer, especially with it expected that the cap will remain fairly flat. Personally on this, I think it will rise by about 1 million, I think the NHL will do that to pacify teams. Schaller won't be back, but is UFA anyway, so doesn't factor into next season's cap. Baerstchi won't be back (either traded during summer or bought out, but I think he has some value during summer when teams are experimenting with improvements to their lineup. Stecher I think gets traded during summer, but might also be around for camp as competition. If we put him on the market, there are enough teams out there who will see his speed and puck moving abilities as an upgrade, I don't think we would have trouble moving him. As it sits right now, we have about 18 million next season without any moves Markstrom - I agree with you, about 6 million. I think he will sign for that to stay with Vancouver Demko - still signed for another season, no need to do anything there Virtanen - I think you and I are pretty close, I think he signs about 2.5 million bridge / show me deal. Gaudette - I think signs a 2 million bridge / show me deal. He is not eligible for offer sheet, he doesn't have that much leverage. Tanev - I agree with you at 6 million. I think he likes it here and will likely stay. Tryamkin - I think 2.5 - 3 million is a fair range for him as well That puts us at 19 million on just resigning existing players. If I'm right about the 1 million increase, that would put us about right. Now, Subtract Eriksson, hopefully retires freeing up 6 million, worst case, to Utica for 1.075 break Subtract Baerstchi 3.366 million That gives us about 4.5 million (9.6 if Eriksson does retire) for call ups etc, not including LTIR, which we ALWAYS have, can't remember the last season we didn't. And, that's not including that fact that if we bring Tryamkin in, either someone will get traded unless the inevitable LTIR strikes our defense as well. Yes, tight, but workable.
  11. Too many guys who are shot suppressors are out of the lineup. We miss Motte more than most people realize.
  12. Decision won't be made till next summer. I think its most likely, that Benning will offer Seattle an extra draft pick to take the player that we want them to take. As a note, Capfriendly.com has a really good simulator, where you can see exactly who is eligible vs exempt. We have LOTS of guys that we can "suggest" that Seattle take, and remember, we're not the only team that is going to have to expose a good up and coming goalie. I would suggest that we try and give Markstrom a 1 year contract, perhaps inflated, so that he would be a UFA 3 weeks after the expansion draft. Would allow us to leave him exposed and protect Demko. I would think that Markstrom wants longer term security, but if we offered him 1 season at 7.5 million or even 8 million, with the understanding that we would negotiate a new deal for him after, closer to a 6 million overall cap hit? Tricky, but might be able to be done. In terms of cap space, yes, we absolutely have the room to do this for next year, Benning has stated that he's comfortable with the cap space that we have. There will be other people who will be leaving this team during the summer.
  13. Look at comparable in the market. Although I would really hope that he would give that big of a discount to stay with the Canucks, realistically on the open market, with how he's playing, he's 6.5 - 7 million. Really depends on how much he likes Vancouver. Maybe we'll luck out and he'll do 5.5 for 3 or 4 years.
  14. Although there's no hard evidence that Eriksson will retire this summer, there's a lot of reasons to believe that he will, freeing up 6 million in space. Eriksson wanted 6 year term because he wanted stability for his kids in school. He won't make this team next season, and I don't think they are willing to just buy him out. That means that Eriksson would lose control of where he plays as for next season, we would get more cap relief by assigning him to Utica, than buying him out. Personally, I think Eriksson will take his 3 million bonus in the summer and retire from the NHL and possibly assume a position with the team. Baertschi, I think might get moved at the deadline as I think he deserves to be in the NHL, but there isn't a place for him here Just my thoughts
  15. Am I reading the KHL correct, regular season wraps up in a couple of weeks, before end of Feb?
  16. Its possible, but unless we have some clear proof behind the scenes that Tryamkin will 100% be here before the playoffs, I can't see Stecher going anywhere until summer.
  17. I wonder if Stecher might be a part of a plan to get back in the first round this year. Stecher + 3rd for a 20 - 25 range 1st.
  18. Stecher is a solid D on most teams. If we decide to move him, and I think we might, he will attract a lot of interest around the league. He's an NHL player, he would be snapped up in waivers within an hour. He's a little smaller, but doesn't lack in overall toughness and durability, very above average on skating, handles the puck well and has a decent shot from the point. The only problem for him is, we have other guys who can replace him from within our system, and all play a similar game and are cheaper. I think due to that, he's likely going to be moved this summer unless someone makes a really good offer before the deadline. Will be sorry to see him go if he is moved, he's been a solid part of the rebuild.
  19. This is a good thing, I'm assuming that Canucks and Bachman have agreed to mutual contract termination, meaning that we drop to 46 currently taken. Gives us more room to sign Tryamkin, Rathbone, Madden etc, and still maybe pickup another college undrafted free agent.
  20. Hahahahahahahhaahah....not sure how many people will get that reference
  21. According to Benning we are in good shape on the cap. He’s not going to move someone who makes our team better going into the playoffs. If Sutter was playing for another team, Benning would be offering a 3rd or better to acquire him right now. We are in compete mode, not rebuild mode!
  22. This! Everyone is in a hurry to make trades, just for the sake of making trades. Shiny thing syndrome.
  23. At times he's looked good, but he's also had extended stretches where he looks completely disengaged. As much as everyone has hoped that he would really get things together, its sporadic at best.
  24. Would love to see him knock Lucic off his feet, REALLY hard!
  25. Not sure who else saw this, this is from today's Vancouver Province: "The 25-year-old, who appears to want to return to Vancouver, is eighth in the KHL in blocked shots (87), sixth in hits among D-men (89) while averaging 20 minutes of ice time this season. Tryamkin has two goals, nine assists and a plus-7 rating in 51 games." I especially like the 6th in hits. We need a Tree hitting other teams forwards!
