  1. Extremely happy if that's the case! Could also explain why Benning really isn't worried about our cap space. Would mean that we drop 6 million off the books during summer, giving us ample room to resign Markstrom, Leivo, Virtanen, Tanev and still bring in Tryamkin etc.
  2. If I remember correctly, part of the reason that he didn't "want" to waive his NTC, was because his kids are all enrolled in school here, and he doesn't want to move them. This was why he wanted a 6 year contract, he wanted stability for his family. This is also part of what is pushing the whole retirement idea, where after his bonus, he's only walking away from 7 million. If Vancouver was to put him into some type of role with the team after retirement, it would allow him to settle here indefinitely. If Canucks refuse to buy him out, sending him to Utica next season, becomes a real possibility, which means he loses control of his immediate access to family without uprooting them.
  3. Are you sure this is correct? From my understanding, the league always wants to have a recapture if the front of the contract is loaded up. Although the Luongo situation is extreme, I think there's something, but could be wrong.
  4. He was having a breakout season, but unless we are really successful at fully removing Eriksson's hit from the books, I'm not sure that we can afford him. Although I do believe that Eriksson will be gone next year, either to retirement or buyout, I would expect that we will need to deal with some type of recapture from his contract. I know how our numbers look if we buy him out, but I am not sure what our cap hit is, if he retires. His contract was front loaded, I'm not actually sure whether we are better to buy him out or have him retire. Any idea where we could find a comparison?
  5. I would think so, don't think he has much left to prove outside of professional hockey. I don't think he's really that far from being NHL ready either, I think a year in Utica and we'll see him start getting opportunity to play in Vancouver.
  6. I don't believe for a minute that he wants out of Vancouver, considering he's from Richmond. That said, I do believe that all things being equal, he's the most likely guy to get traded on defense if Tryamkin comes back. I think Benning will continue to remake the defense in the off season, we made great progress last summer, still needs a little work though.
  7. Markstrom likes his shots! Don't know why, but we seem to win when he gets a heavy shot total. I think we resign Markstrom for 3 years, about 5.75 - 6 million per, keep grooming Demko. I think Demko will eventually take over and provide the same level of performance as Markstrom, but the fact that he's had 2 concussions this season, scares me a little.
  8. From what I've seen this year, in the games MacEwen has played, he belongs in the NHL. He's been showing that he can move up and down the lineup and not look out of place, and brings a bit more toughness to the lineup, which we have been missing with Ferland out. I'm not sure that Benning will make permanent moves to make room for him before summer, but I'd say that we're now in a position where we can let a couple of guys walk and be able to replace from within at a cheaper rate. Pretty sure that Schaller won't be back next season, and although I like how Leivo has played this season, I don't think that he'll be back either. I think Canucks will give younger guys a chance to fill those roles now.
  9. Really nice to have options, has been a long time coming. Imagine 2 years ago, if we had this many regulars out of the lineup. We'd be losing every night! I like our chances in the playoffs this year (Not saying we're ready to win the cup), we have enough depth and guys in Utica who can step in, that we can outlast a lot of other teams in terms of attrition.
  10. That's pretty good return for the Wild on Zucker. Galchenyuk is salary dump, but could still bounce back with a different team, Addison is showing promise in Junior and this is supposed to be a strong draft.
  11. This would be my understanding as well.
  12. Much happier if we keep Virtanen. I think Stecher is expendable if Tryamkin does actually plan on coming back here after the season in Russia, but that's still a big "IF"
  13. Canucks did a review of Ferland with doctors before signing him. I like the idea in general, but there's also a little bit of a "Buyer beware", with pre-owned It should be noted, that the sooner that we activate him from LTIR, the sooner we lose his 3.5 million cap relief. Let's REALLY make sure that he's good to go before we do. I think that's the big delay on sending him to Utica as well, they are doing a little disguising LTIR as cautious approach....
  14. Imagine being inside the Octagon for the next championship match. The stuff that's coming puts you so close, you can see the teeth fly, in high def.
  15. Fully immersive sports is coming, its about 2 years away. Need to get the install base on 5G up to where it should be, but 5G enables all kinds of possibilities such as fully autonomous cars. If you haven't experienced the speed yet, its in line with a high speed fiber optics connection.
  16. I'm only guessing, but I think he's been fighting an injury to his wrist or something, for the last few weeks. I think that's the reason behind his drop in production and why he had been moved down to 3rd line. I think they did that to take the pressure off him on scoring for a few games. His shot was looking better on Saturday.
  17. So, a couple of years ago, at CES in Vegas, I got a chance to try out 5G VR with Intel. Was really impressive. I put on the headset, and I'm standing in the middle of the basketball court, the players are playing around me and through me. Look down, there's the court. Look up, there's the score clock. Full 360 degree rotation, follow the play right from the middle of the court. They also were demonstrating it with Nascar, where you're essentially sitting on the roof of the car as it flies around the track at over 200 mph, and you're turning and looking at the cars that you're passing or are trying to pass you. Was really incredible. 5G makes this possible. Imagine having PPV hockey where you put on a headset and you're suddenly 7 or 8 feet above the ice, watching the play with a 2 second delay (about what you experience right now with Shaw). Being able to turn and follow as they pass back and forth at the blueline and fully follow the play.
  18. Was there any news on what the injury actually is?
  19. I don't think I was really being clear. Benning has said all along though, that he will find ways to move veterans out as youth prove that they are ready to take their place.
  20. As posted earlier by @Jimmy McGill, we could absolutely buy Eriksson out if needed, this summer. It would still provide us with enough space. Remember that we will also lose someone in summer 2021 to Seattle as well.
  21. There will be other roster moves. including replacing some veterans with guys on ELCs. If Benning says he’s comfortable with our cap space, I trust his opinion.
  22. It’s true that it’s expected that the cap will stay flat this coming summer. I would personally expect it to go up by 1 to 1.5 million again. This is continuing the escrow correction that started last summer. With the new broadcasting agreement the following summer, I would expect to see the cap jump to somewhere in the 88 million range, which would still give enough of a bump to d what we need to do, while completing the escrow correction. I’m just guessing, but what is completely accurate is, NHL revenue is continuing to grow, and Seattle entering the league is only going to advance that even more.
  23. Posters don’t actually know what’s going on with the team, they speculate and guess. That’s what all of us do. The idea that he would retire this coming summer, was originally floated by @Alflives, and it has a lot of merit. After his 3 million bonus is paid this summer, he’s only owed another 7 million. I think Eriksson likes it here in Vancouver, its entirely possible and conceivable, that he retire and join the team in some capacity. I don’t think Eriksson is a bad guy, clearly this should have been a much different contract than it was, I think the fact that NO ONE would trade for him last summer, even with his own agent trying to make deals behind the scenes, was an eye opener for him. Some players decline faster than others, just like some mature faster than others. Pretty sure Eriksson knows that his chance of making this team next season are pretty remote. I think he will retire, I think there’s enough out there to form that hypothesis, but again, it is only a hypothesis, ythe same as everything else on this forum. It’s just ne that makes a lot of sense.
  24. Kid is going to be great when he fills out a little more.
  25. According to Benning, we are okay on cap space moving forward, I trust his knowledge of the cap over anyone in this board. I think that Eriksson will likely retire from the NHL after this season. Although we will likely face some type of recapture penalty, this will be less than a direct buyout. Why would Eriksson do this? He will likely be sent to Utica next season if he’s still with the team, which means he loses control of where he is in relation to his family. Remember, the summer that we have to sign Pettersson and Hughes, is the same summer that the NHL will be signing the new broadcast deal, which means a more significant jump in the cap. In conclusion, let’s just keep our draft picks and focus on developing internally, we aren’t as tight against the cap as everyone seems to think.
