Toews & Keith get into scrap at morning skate
VegasCanuck replied to Deets's topic in General Hockey Discussion
I think he's a better overall transition guy than Pouliot was, but time will tell when he gets a chance to play up in the NHL. Hopefully his skills translate and that we don't deal with constant mental lapses. -
They signed Woo last year. My guess would be that they want to bring Utunen over for next season. Figure that Karlsson and Tryamkin would also likely be on the radar, although he might not be seeing Tryamkin as a prospect specifically.

[Discussion] Getting Domi
VegasCanuck replied to deus.ex.makina's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
You're offering spare parts, all of whom won't even make the Canucks next year, for one of Montreal's core players. Any play for Domi would have to include the equivalent of a quality first round pick as a starting point. Montreal would probably be looking for someone like Podkolzin, although I don't think they would be willing to wait for him. They need solutions to their issues, NOW. -
Saw this as well, really good update! We have a LOT of prospects to be excited about. Lots of guys who will be stepping in and taking over minutes.

I think Leivo is down until somewhere around March. I think Ferland is at least 2 - 3 weeks out (might be wrong, concussions are tricky, especially for Ferland). That means, plenty of time for Sutter or someone else to wind up injured to make room for them. Unfortunately, it ALWAYS happens lol
-
Has been a really pleasant surprise, how he's turned himself around the last 8 or 10 games. REALLY hope that he can keep it going. Seems to be finding some good chemistry with Horvat and Pearson. Maybe just needed a couple of bigger players to work with???

Don't encourage....... lol

Why are you trying to destroy our depth and guarantee that we spend YEARS more at the bottom of the league?
-
Okay, where to start...... Yes, Patrick Kane is a great player and still performing incredibly well. However, he is now 31 years old and will be starting to decline in a year or two. I would like to move LE, but not at the expense of adding another high dollar contract (even with 50% retained, its still 5.25 million), and longer term. Take a look at who we have to sign 2 - 4 years out and ask if you would rather sign them, or have an aging Patrick Kane around tying up the space we need for them. This scenario gives up WAY too much, even if it is Patrick Kane. If he was still in his mid...ish 20's, then great, but players don't play forever and he is well past the midway point of his career. Considering Benning's ability to find guys in the draft, I'd much rather keep Eriksson and if necessary buy him out this summer and keep the draft picks and prospects. IMO, we're much further ahead in that scenario. Remember, these trades don't always work out the way that you hope when adding older players. Look at San Jose with Karlsson, He's still putting up points, but they have not performed well as a team since making that trade. It could be argued that they gave away FAR too much in younger depth to go all in. That approach doesn't work as often as it used to in the NHL. The cap creates whole new dynamics. You're better to build from within and add selectively for depth. 11.5 million per year at that term for someone who's turning 30 before the end of the season and is committed for another 7 years after this, that's a hard number to move. IMO, trust Benning, stay the course and unless another deal like snagging Miller, comes along, keep developing our draft picks.
-
Personally, I think we sign him at the end of the season and give him a couple of years in the AHL to see if he can develop and stay healthy. I think he has the skill and drive to make it to the NHL, but not the durability. Kind of like we are all worried about with Juolevi, not enough durability for a sustainable career. (REALLY hope I'm wrong about both Lockwood and Juolevi)

Vegas Golden Knights. Gerard Gallant fired
VegasCanuck replied to redhdlois's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Green isn't going anywhere. Canucks are pretty happy with where things are at for now. We're competitive and in the mix for playoffs. If we miss, they may reevaluate in the off season, but for now, they are happy with him. -
I've got to hand it to him, Eriksson has been looking good the last few games. Would love to see him become relevant again.

Again, not that I want to do Toronto any favors, but would be okay with moving Stecher and / or Benn if any of the following are expected to happen: #1. Rathbone is ready to sign at the end of this College season and begin his tour of the Utica blueline and take a big step towards what will hopefully be a very long and successful NHL career. #2. That we will be signing Tryamkin when his season completes, or at least during summer. #3. That Benning thinks that Rafferty is ready to audition for Stechers spot in Vancouver, and #4. That Benning thinks that Juolevi is not too far behind Rafferty on being ready to debut in Vancouver. We are in compete mode, and we don't want to dilute out depth too much, but its also obvious that we are going to need to move some guys out to make room. I like Benn's size, but not sure that he's being as effective here as we had hoped. But, in a long playoff run, you need enough depth to survive it. We know that Chatfield, Sautner, and Brisebois are capable of filling in for Vancouver, but not sure that we are fully confident in their ability to play more than 9 - 12 minutes per game yet. Further, we know that Jett Woo will be heading to Utica at the end of this season, and I wonder if they might be thinking of bringing Utunen over as well when his season completes. As long as there is a solution to overall depth for the rest of this season and next, and as long as it involves pillaging Toronto's overall depth, I can learn to live with it!

[Report] Zack Kassian suspended 2 games
VegasCanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
Should just make this the new wallpaper of the Calgary website and change their name to the Calgary Turtles. If you're going to throw a hit like that, have the guts to go toe to toe. -

Really don't think he deserved this. Was a dangerous hit that he took. Penalties on the ice were more than enough, I would have given him the double for roughing and left it at that. -
[Report] Morgan Rielly out minimum 8 weeks
VegasCanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
They badly need to move someone upfront to get better depth on defense. There isn't anyone on defense that I'd like to move right now, (Benn maybe), but now might be a good time for a team to pillage them in exchange for defensive help....:) -
(Update) Quinn Hughes voted into NHL All-Star Game (Last Man Standing)

Really awesome! -
The sky is falling....

Glad they are waiting

Very possible. Benning has even said that he's ahead of schedule on development. He's short, but hearing that he's about 190 lbs now means that he's not exactly small. Build more like a tank. As long as he keeps his head up, he should be able to survive the NHL. A lot depends on how he adjusts to the faster pace.

We need to use our young guys and farm (Discussion)
VegasCanuck replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I agree completely with that. I think he will get a look if we have a couple of guys go down on defense. Right now, we have Benn sitting most nights, so he steps in first, but really could see Rafferty getting a look on injury relief in the next couple of months. -

VegasCanuck replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I think there are 2 things happening here. #1, Canucks are really chasing a playoff spot, HARD. If they need to pull someone up for a few games, that player is either going to only practice with the team, or play limited minutes until he earns the coaches trust. If we were trending towards the bottom of the league, I think you'd see more of players being called up for a look and some experience, this WILL happen later season if the Canucks fall out of contention. #2. Canucks have limited cap space, as we all know, and this restricts pulling kids up, JUST to give them some time with the Canucks, even if its just practicing and working with the Vancouver training and coaching staff for a week or so. I think we would have seen more of this, if Luongo had taken LTIR route instead of deciding to retire and saddle us with the recapture hit. Right now, we have about 30k of cap space, so unless someone decides that they will take a flyer on Baerstchi and take him off our books, don't expect anything that you're suggesting to happen unless we hit further injuries and need replacements. I agree that it would be great to see how they can perform in the NHL, but until either of those 2 points are resolved, I can't see it happening. -
[Discussion] - Value of Michael Dipietro
VegasCanuck replied to laddie's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Agree completely, was going to post something similar. As soon as we start establishing the depth that has held this organization back, suddenly fans want to trade it away. To be a strong team for a long period of time, you have to have the depth necessary to survive a grinding season as well as 4 series of hockey. Our loss in 2011, was due to attrition, we didn't have enough depth on replacements to match up in a physical series. -

I don't know why so many fans want to undermine the depth that Benning has built. Markstrom will be resigned as our starter for at least another 3 - 4 years.
