Fans need to forget this, he will NOT be bought out of his contract, Canucks are happy with where he is and how he is developing. As soon as his season ends next season, he will sign with the Canucks and likely debut in Canucks uniform before the end of the season. Until then, he will continue in the VHL / KHL, which is better than him developing here in Junior or even the AHL.

Its going to be tight. If you think I'm trying to say that we will have lots of room, I'm not. We will have enough, but its going to be tight. The biggest point is though, its going to be tight for ALL teams in the league, so it helps reduce factors that are driving contract rates up. We are going to have to do some juggling, but I'm confident that Benning has the room to do this. Baerstchi will be easier to move in the off season. If we can't trade him, we probably buy him out. It would mean 1.7 million and change hit next season and 800k the following. I'm hoping that we'll be able to do something at the draft in the neighborhood of trading him to a team with a 4th round pick and say 500k retained. This will be a balancing act, might see someone like Benn also being shipped out, maybe down to play with his brother in Dallas. Its crazy when you look in CapFriendly, at how little space a lot of the teams will have next summer. Everyone is going to have some really hard decisions to make. Keep in mind as well, there are teams out there, like Ottawa, who will have in the neighborhood of 40 million in Cap Space next summer and currently only 8 people signed. They might be a target to do some creative trading with since they are looking for some warm bodies who can augment their lineup until their developing players are really ready to take over. Would they consider a deal where they take Eriksson and a 3rd or 4th round draft pick, with 3 million retained? They would eat up 6 million in cap space for the bargain basement price of 1 million in actual cost per year. The only reason Ottawa made it to the league minimum this year is due to all those LTIR players on their roster, guys who will never play again. They have an owner who likes to eat up space on the cheap. He might be willing to take a gamble on doing that type of a deal. Canucks will have lots of leverage with Eriksson since this is his last year of full NTC, and the idea that they could threaten him with demotion to Utica next season will make him much more open to destinations. Going to be interesting to see how this plays out, but I trust Benning to figure out the options and navigate us through to another competitive team next season.

My math is, we will have about 21.5 million to work with during the summer. This is based on Baerstchi either being traded or being bought out. I think Stecher gets moved to make room for Tryamkin, and as @Alflives has suggested, I think Eriksson could easily retire this summer after he gets his bonus cheque, although I haven't calculated on that. I think they will try and resign Tanev (5 - 5.5 million), Markstrom (5 - 6 million), and that you'll see Virtanen resigned (about 2.5 million), Motte (1.5 million), Gaudette (1.5 million), I think you'll see Canucks let go of anyone I haven't listed and look to replace from players developing in Utica. I don't think Levo will be back for example, unless its at a rate that is close to what he's making now. All teams in the NHL are going to be tight again this summer, NO ONE is going to be looking to overspend on free agents. Will be really surprised if anyone does. Keep in mind, we will continue to have LTIR, we do every year.
-
I don't think this is going to really be an issue. There will be a small increase in the cap over the off season, might only be 1 - 1.5 million again as the escrow continues to reset itself. We have a number of guys dropping off the cap and its likely that we will not have Baerstchi around next season. I think a lot of fans are thinking its going to be a bigger issue than it actually will be.

[Discussion] Canuck’s Prospect Rankings #1-10
VegasCanuck replied to Odjick the Warrior's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Its really hard to rank them. This team has NEVER had this many high end prospects in the pipeline. We should be a good team for a lot of years. -
I don't think Hughes has over the top high end speed, but he's well above average, and his mobility and ability to turn on a dime and make plays under pressure and in traffic are what elevate him to being elite prospect. He has a very quick first few steps that allow him to create immediate separation. I think he will get faster on straight out speed as he gains more physical maturity. I see him becoming a point per game player or better in a year or two.
-
Have noticed that he doesn't go out looking for hits, but he doesn't shy away from them when the opportunity is there. Anyone he hits, they are going to feel it! Really hope he comes back the end of this season. We need this type of size to really wear a team like St Louis down in a Playoff series.

I think they leaned on some of their older players for offense and pushed Podkolzin to maintain his 2 way game and to be defensively responsible. The points that I take away from the tournament are: #1. He was extremely effective, even though he's still just an 18 year old. #2. Benning and a number of other scouts believe that he could easily be playing in the NHL now, and I take their evaluation over anyone else on this board, especially when we look at how good Benning is at identifying talent. #3. As I demonstrated a number of pages ago, there were a LOT of scouts going into the draft who had Podkolzin slotted in as a top 3 talent in the draft. The ONLY reason we got him was because he was still signed to the KHL for 2 more seasons. He "should" be a force when he enters the NHL at the end of next season or at the start of the following. One scout called him a STEAL at #7, we got him at 10. Exciting prospect who we were extremely lucky to get.

(Update) Quinn Hughes voted into NHL All-Star Game (Last Man Standing)
VegasCanuck replied to Pete M's topic in Canucks Talk
I voted today, who else did??? -
This has actually been my take on his status. I don't think he was fully healed from the concussion from last season when he came to camp. He may need to shut down for the full season, possibly permanently. I think he's tried to come back to early from these and rush his recovery and it may have done permanent damage to him.

Shaller is paid 1.9 million per year and is on an expiring contract, he's a UFA after this season and although I think he does a decent job on the 4th line, he won't be back. We now have other, cheaper options in our prospect pool, who can do the same job. If should also be noted, Shaller was not signed to score goals, he was signed to prevent them, which he does better than Granlund does. For Granlund to be effective, in my opinion, he needs to play middle 6 minutes and role. Shaller was brought in specifically to play bottom 6 role and add experience.

[Signing] Kovalchuk signs with Montreal
VegasCanuck replied to AriGold2.0's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Wow, that's a BIG drop in pay. Shows how badly Los Angeles overpaid to sign an over aged player. -
I voted yes, because although we will continue to add kids from Utica as they mature, we are exiting the rebuild phase and should be competing and pushing for playoffs every year. When we made the push for a cup, we emptied what amounted to a badly stocked cupboard to make the push. I believe in a Cap NHL, good teams are generally in a constant state of rebuild, continually pushing to replace aging core players. When I look at a team like San Jose, I see a team that is generally loading up on guys who are on the wrong side of the development curve and I believe that is the biggest reason for their current position. In the cap NHL, you need to be able to look at your players and make a decision to move guys at the right time and not over commit to them, too far into their 30's. The Canucks made this mistake with Eriksson, NJ just made the mistake betting on Subban and there's more examples around the NHL. I think, smart teams will steer away from long term contracts to guys who are 30 or over and will instead, opt to keep their development pool active and keep pulling kids up from the minors to replenish. If we can keep this philosophy and with Benning's drafting record, we should be able to replenish at will in the coming years.

(Update) Quinn Hughes voted into NHL All-Star Game (Last Man Standing)
VegasCanuck replied to Pete M's topic in Canucks Talk
Yes, but trust me, people in Vegas, don't think as much about doing voting on this stuff as we do! We have an advantage if we can get enough fans following through. Imagine McDavid, Pettersson and Hughes as a 3 on 3 combination at All Star game -
Definitely did. This kid is exceeding all expectations so far, incredibly creative and thinks the game at a REALLY high level.
-
This kid is going to be really fun to watch.

(Update) Quinn Hughes voted into NHL All-Star Game (Last Man Standing)
VegasCanuck replied to Pete M's topic in Canucks Talk
Is there anywhere that shows totals of who's leading? -
I think if he picks up one more point, he takes over top spot in the tournament. I believe he's in a 3 or 4 way tie right now with 9 points in 5 games.
-
Fans on this site are more interested in points. prevention of points by the other team is often overlooked here, but it's no less important.

[2019-2020] Canucks Prospects Stat Tracker
VegasCanuck replied to Down by the River's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
So, here's a question, assuming that we don't make any trades that shed some contracts, we are currently sitting at 47 active contracts going into the last half of the year. Guys who are currently in our prospect pool, who we might look at signing include: Hoglander Tryamkin Focht Lockwood Madden Rathbone I'm just looking at guys who might be signed at the end of their season and added to Utica. Now, with Lockwood, Madden and Rathbone, they could easily be given Utica PTO's to allow them to play a few games down there before the end of the season and be available for the playoffs. Normally, we are active in the College free agents and snagged a really good prospect in Rafferty last year. Tryamkin of course, would only be signed to play in the NHL, but who would you prioritize for actual NHL contracts so that they could get a game or two with the Canucks, before the end of the season? I also think that if Tryamkin is signed, unless we have a significant injury on defense, it will probably spell the end of Stecher in Vancouver, although Tryamkin's season doesn't end until after the NHL trade deadline, so the option to make that type of a move won't work until summer. Thoughts? -
Gives him something to practice next summer I really feel like next year will be the real breakout year for Pettersson, it will be his 3rd, and he will have another summer to gain upper body strength. I don't see him ever being over 200 lbs, but I could easily see him hitting into the low 190's and still maintaining his speed.

Elias Pettersson to represent Canucks at the NHL All-Star
VegasCanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Could have easily had both Pettersson and Hughes there representing the Canucks. The new 3 on 3, doesn't leave a whole lot of room for flexibility on how many per team.
