[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
VegasCanuck replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Rutherford identified at year end that its not just personnel, it's systems play. We need to collectively be doing a better job at zone exits. Need to make sure that the puck is out of the zone before all our forwards exit. -

It definitely does need work. I'm interested to see if Poolman is healthy this year and clear of migraines etc, if he can become a valid RD for us. There were flashes last year, but he really struggled to put together any type of consistency. If we are patient and look for the right trade, leveraging depth at forward, we will be in pretty strong shape for the 2023/24 season. -

Yes, he was responsible for a part of that success, but we're still not the train wreck on defense that everyone thinks. Part of transitioning out of the zone is not just our defense, it's our forwards staying around and making sure the puck gets out. There were too many times last year where we turned the puck over and our forwards were already half way up the ice, looking for a pass. One of the worst forwards for making bad passes in our own zone was Miller. As much as he compensates for that in the offensive zone, just making a sound play out of our end will mean that Demko has to make less panic saves. That's all about systems play. I'm looking forward to seeing how this team looks after Bruce having a chance to assemble the team and lines the way he wants, right out of camp, not just trying to adjust on the fly. -
I might be in the minority here, but I think 4.82 million per is a little high for a guy who puts up just slightly over .4 points per game (29 points in 66 games). Pearson puts up .5 points per game like clockwork and at 3.25 million per season, there are a LOT of fans on this board who feel he's vastly overpaid and a colossal waste of money. For me, the long-term contract price for Kotkaniemi is around 3.5 million per season. He's still got room to grow, but IMO, Carolina would happily turn back time and reverse that offer sheet if they could.

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

Although our defense needs some work, we were tied for 9th overall, with Los Angeles last year for least goals against and 5 on 5, we were one of the best defenses in the league. So, yes, it needs work, we need to improve our RD, and our transition out of the zone, but considering how badly we started the first 2 months of the year, to finish tied for 9th out of 32 teams suggests that the defense isn't the train wreck that a lot of fans seem to think it is. Management still really wants to make a trade that would lower our overall cap and improve our RD, but I don't think anyone is panicking if we go into training camp with this overall team structure. -

Joe Sakic says NO, and that's the one that matters. He's not going to undermine his teams competitiveness for years for one year of Miller. That's not how Joe builds. -
Are we still talking about offer sheeting Dobson? The ONLY way the Islanders don't match is if its an outrageous one year offer. See Montreal vs Carolina for reference. So, unless you're willing to put something like a 12 to 15 million, one year offer in front of him and live with the ripple effect throughout our lineup, then this is an irrelevant discussion!

You are absolutely right! We might have to choose to get back other assets. The search that I did was based on NHL ready or nearly NHL ready players. We might be able to broaden the search if we can get a bluechip who's still unsigned as well as some other assets. -

IF we do trade Miller before the start of the season, the only 2 teams in the NHL that I can really see as viable trading partners, based on RD assets who could immediately help us are NJ and NYR. I really don't see any other team that has the strength at RD where they could move someone to us without undermining their overall team strength. -

As long as we've got them somewhere, that's all that matters.... -

I don't see anyone on that list who could conceivably clone Pettersson 1.0 and create a team of minions for us.... -

We have patient management, that's not a bad thing. Fans in this town want immediate and that's not how successful teams are built. Remember the haul that Sakic got trading Duchene? Fans thought he was being too patient too, but he brought the assets that delivered a cup to Colorado with the haul he got by being patient. This is a cap market that is REALLLLLLY tight due to Covid collapsing the regular increases. You want to improve the team, it requires patience. You want to be talking about the new high draft pick perpetually, every February, you rush things and make trades for the sake of making trades. -

I don't see any of their RD going anywhere, they are too hard to replace. Much more likely they mive Devon Toews, they have depth on LD that they can promote. -

When putting together trade proposals, it can't just be, "Hey, we want this guy", it has to be a player that a team can afford to lose. Teams move guys from areas of strength and depth when they have young players in the AHL, pushing for a spot. Loot at the trading partner and ask, can they afford to lose this guy, do they have someone who can step in immediately. Colorado has 3 good RD, they don't have anyone in their farm system who is pushing to make the team at that position. Same goes with the Islanders with Dobson, no one steps into his spot, they can't afford to lose him. NJ has lots of guys at RD as do the Rangers. Those are our best trading partners right now. -

We need RD, who do you see that the Avs would be willing to part with. Not just, hey, we'd like to grab this player, but someone in their depth that they would be willing to move. -

Colorado is not our ideal trading partner. -
Islanders would absolutely match at that price. You want him through offersheet? 1 Year, 10+ million. In fact, they might match that and just figure it out for a year. Dobson is evolving quickly into a #1 RD. Look around the league at what those go for, 7 years at 9.5 gets the discussion started for Dobson, but NYI likely match that.

We should make the playoffs, but there is still a lot of work to do this summer. There will still be at least one trade, but I will be shocked if it happens before Kadri signs
