Revealed: 8 people died at B.C. recovery home hailed as groundbreaking

...More people and institutions are starting to question the lack of regulation and ad-hoc programming at B.C.’s recovery facilities. This is partly because they deal with life-or-death situations and also because they receive millions of dollars in government funding and have been positioned as the government’s main response to the drug toxicity crisis that continues to kill thousands of British Columbians.

A number of groups, including Workers for Ethical Substance Use Policy, Moms Stop The Harm, the BC Humanist Society, Harm Reduction Nurses Association, and the roughly 50,000-member BC Nurses Union have all taken positions that the B.C. recovery industry should be regulated and evidence-based.

  3. usually can't keep up with @King Heffy's level of disdain, but Tyson Barrie definitely can't play defensively at the NHL level.

Ekholm is a huge improvement, esp. if he feels a bit rejuvenated to be in a playoff race with McD. Edmonton has needed a defenseman for a long-time, can't say this isn't worth it for them.

Very unpopular player in Toronto. Was already disliked but when Toronto protected him over McCann it boiled into anger.

I don’t see Liljegren or Sandin coming back. Perhaps Topi Niemela?

Therre were rumours of Niemela being a player of interest and he had a major down year. Would be ready to come over next season

Schenn for Kerfoot , Topi, Minten or

Schenn for Kerfoot, Topi, a 3rd and 5th

  5. I am even more stoked on the Bear acquisition today

The dude clearly needed a fresh start with a new coach but regardless he had a 81% WAR as a depth d and a GVSA by Dom of 2.7 million last year - his worst year. By all reports he was struggling with injury and covid and was out of shape, but that has been dealt with. The fact that he's a smooth skater who can both transition decently and is proven on the PK are exactly what PA/JR were looking for last year - albeit they obviously wanted a more proven solution. But a 5th rounder for Bear with retention? That's extremely low risk.

Coming in just as the team is turning it around again and some injured players are getting their feet (incl. Mikheee let's gooooo) might be just what the doctor ordered for an Ethan Bear revitalization

Lane Pederson dating Schenn's sister and getting 2 points in his debut is a nice little community-oriented bonus at no cost.

I'd all for an Ethan Bear acquisition - he's not really "the answer," but the cost of RHD is clearly insane right now, and he's a project that would bring competition to the top-6. Short of landing a true top-4 rhd with the tools to compliment Quinn, which is seeming more and more impossible, Bear would at least be an improvement and maybe with that much competition on the back end, they'd get it done by committee. Either Bear or de Haan would be decent acquisitions at this point who are more "band-aids" or "projects" than filling the top-4 gap - but if the team is pushing for the playoffs, which they are, anything to improve the d corps is still a step up.

    OEL - Hughes

    Dermott - Bear

    Rathbone - Myers

    Schenn, Burroughs/Poolman

Boudreau would have to rely hard on the top pairing but both other pairings would have decent transition games and Dermott, Bear and Rathbone all come with untapped potential, maybe they'd rise to the occasion. Boner and Myers showed some limited chemistry in a previous stint. Dermott showed impressive underlying stats so far in Boudreau's system...who knows if that'll last. A 2nd PP unit of OEL - Bear would also be a big improvement over having Myers there. If he had to break up OEL and Hughes, there's a chance Bear and Hughes would compliment each other as a two-way pairing.

    Hughes - Bear

    OEL - Myers

    Rathbone - Dermott

Bear is also a decent PKer - he was on the 2nd pairing of Edmonton's PK the season before last when they finished 9th oa, whereas last year they finished 17th after losing Bear and Khaira.

Bear does have the tools to be a dynamic top-4 defender IMO, whether the right environment, chemistry and TOI come together will be another thing IMO. He definitely had a diminished role being behind Pesce and DeAngelo but managed still managed to play beyond his value, and the beyond the AAV he's signed for next year.

The fact that he's a trailblazer for the Cree community in some ways (a mentor for Keeper?), community-oriented, came up through hard work ethic fighting thru racism, and that he's willing to now fight rats like Tkachuk in the big leagues are all added bonuses to his play.

think anyone paying attention would definitely agree with you, a Parayko type going into next season would be preferable to Bear for sure - but I do think if Allvin's hands are tied in terms of true top-4 options, that trying to bring in Bear or de Haan at relatively cheap cost would still help the defense improve a bit. Bear isn't terribly physical but he is dependable defensively, and although he didn't PK much last year, he was a fixture for the 9th place Edmonton PK the year before last (Which dropped to 17th without him and Khaira). For a team whose goal is to make the playoffs "or disaster" Bear could be a cost effective improvement over Myers, likely Dermott on the right-side if he regresses back to the mean of his career, Poolman, deKeyser, Schenn in most ways and Burroughs, jury will be out on Rathbone's next jump up too; and Allvin can continue to try to find a way to fill the team's actual need. His GVSA value was higher than all those guys last year even in a diminished role, and he has tools to be better if he responds to Boudreau's system and increased TOI well. Depending on the cost, I'd be for a Bear acquisition over standing pat.

EDIT: No, I am not advocating for a Hoggie trade at all, especially after his and Bruce's remarks about his return. If there's another way to make it work though, I think it's worth considering.

    6’5” right shot D man?

Easy claim. I’d actually take Myers and Tierny to be honest.

Any sense of how Tierney did at camp/pre-season? Would've been on my list last year, but has his play fallen that much? Tierney - Aman - Lazar (Joshua) could be nice, with all 3 players with C experience.

Call Friedman the least exciting, but perhaps most practical pickup on the list. He’s been a borderline NHLer since 2019, and plays a safe, simple game that is best suited for the bottom pairing. Friedman skates well, defends effectively, and doesn’t get cute with the puck very often. He’s not a long-term solution by any means, but if the Canucks are looking for someone to eat a few extra minutes on the right side of their blueline, Friedman is a safe bet to do so.

Was just about to post about Friedman before I saw your post.

Definitely think there's a decent chance the Canucks take a flyer - Allvin was part of Hextall's staff when the Pens picked him off waivers. League min deal right now. Very good as a #7-8. Lots of competitive drive; upper echelon of blocked shots per 60; some time spent on Pens 3rd placed PK last year when he played; a hit per game; some 'pest' tendencies to his game (from Bowling Green--some Bieksa vibes to some degree IMO lol). Right-handed. Some under rated offensive abilities/reads that haven't been given a chance at the NHL; good mobility. Not "huge" but as he says below not afraid of going against the biggest player on the ice. I'd consider taking a flyer at the price, can always be waived again if not a fit.
