How'd we only have LaFayette for 38 games? He was a champ bottom-6 in our '94 cup run.

2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017

This was Granlund's first full NHL year, and Baertschi's second. We won't know their ceilings for another couple years but they're already showing to be 20-goal players. Granlund's brother took several years to suddenly break out this season. Worst-case they look solid middle-six, and place-holders while our draftees develop. -

In Horvat, Boeser, Baertschi, and Granlund we appear to already have half our future top six, with Goldobin, Dahlen, Virtanen, and this year's pick as solid potential to fill the rest. Unknowns in Lockwood and Gaudette still on the way, too, along with potential trade of a good dman for another. -
20 baseline. In his sleep. Kid walked onto the team and showed he has NHL game and big league hockey IQ, along with a great attitude and maturity. He's further ahead than guys like Baertschi and Granlund were, even at 21 and 22.

Indeed, look at what we'd have on D -- Tryamkin and a bunch of lightweights. Gudbranson was brought in to help fix that situation, so moving both him and Sbisa will not happen. -
You're right -- once they put Stecher on the PP with him he'll start blasting one-timers into the net. Tap-ins might be every 3rd game.

i.e. needs to be an overpayment. We're not in the business of rescuing other teams for mere market value. -
Have to remember he's not just a "third line center" but is one of the top-minute forwards every game because he plays in nearly all situations.

He mentions Subban a lot, too. A year ago, even suggested he could be their 4th best prospect.

May depend upon if Benning is able to move a dman for a good young forward by then first. The 2018 draft projects to have more dmen at the top of the order in a stronger year, so this may be the year to take a forward. -

Agreed -- if it's between Patrick and Hischier I think they go Nico, especially considering some of the recent comments about Patrick's compete level. That's why I also think Glass and Necas are high on their list. -

Listen to the interview. He regards Ehlers as a better lateral skater (best he's seen in Halifax in 20 years), but straight-ahead speed may be the same. Ehlers is slighter, whereas Hischier doesn't shy away from contact and his #1 priority this summer is to gain weight. Says Hischier has at least as much hockey sense as Ehlers, and is a complete player right now; no big weaknesses. In fact, suggests he could make the team that drafts him this Fall. All in all, very positive. -
Juolevi certainly wasn't drafted for his size and he's never going to be a big bruiser, even if he makes 200lbs or more. Jake is not just physical, he was one of the fastest skaters and had one of the best shots of his draft year. If anything, the Canucks have gone for skill much more than size and grit to this point (especially in trades), but ultimately I think that once they get to where they want to be there will be a good mix of both. Right now they're just trying to catch up for all the missed years and get some guys in who can actually do something with the puck -- exactly what we saw from the two TDL trades, and Benning said he's not done in wanting to acquire even more skill. Scoring is the team's biggest lack right now.

So speaking of Hischier, here's an interview today of John Moore, the voice of the Mooseheads. Definitely worth a listen: http://www.tsn.ca/radio/vancouver-1040-i-1410/moore-hischier-s-hockey-sense-is-off-the-charts-1.718616 "John Moore, play-by-play voice of the Halifax Mooseheads, says Nico Hischier is very responsible defensively and he has “hockey sense off the charts”. John says Hischier is willing to play physical and take hit to make a play. John says Hischier doesn’t have the skating ability of Ehlers, but hockey sense is similar." -

How would Edmonton look now if they'd reached a bit and taken Lindholm, let alone a Trouba or Forsberg? Nobody can for-sure project how all players will turn out, but if there's a guy you're really sold on I think you take him even if it's a bit of a reach -- that is, unless you get some sweet offers to swap picks, but then that's where something like a trigger deal comes in. An extra 2nd round pick doesn't mean much if the guy you really wanted gets taken in the process and turns out as you figured he would. Should JB take a Necas, Glass, or CM with the first or second pick? He'd certainly be roasted at first and especially if Patrick and Hischier turn out better, but would be a genius if they didn't. How confident is he in his and his scouts' assessment? Typically GMs err on the conservative side, especially that high in the draft. -
Since when? Jake at 6'1 hardly massive, Juolevi and Boeser project as average, Jasek, Zhukenov, Lockwood, Stukel are all on the smaller side, then the guys they've acquired like Granlund, Baertschi, Vey, Molino, Dahlen, Goldobin, etc. They've drafted far more small than large players, especially in the early rounds.

Are you saying Monahan is more dynamic than Horvat? I'd say the other way around -- Monahan accumulates more points but is often not noticeable and rather plain-Jane, whereas Horvat is always driving play and makes dynamic moves on the offensive end, whether an inside-out or Bo-drag.

It sounds enticing and practical to "trade down" but it is also fraught with danger. While from our perspective we might see a half-dozen desirable and interchangeable players, it is much more likely that JB (or any team) have one or two specific players targeted. Thereby, you may trade yourself down past the one(s) you truly wanted and despite the other asset(s) gained be deprived of the main one. The alternative is a trigger deal made pre-draft. You take the player you would be happy with and the other team(s) really want at your assigned spot, then when it comes to their pick if the guy you really want is still on the board you trigger the trade. -

So you project Hischier as not franchise-changing? Will he remain a center, does he have 1st-line potential? Or is the current Ehlers his ceiling? -
Was just thinking that, very possible they were turned off by his over-the-line play. While they do want grit, they have yet to draft anyone like him who actively seeks to agitate and get away with pushing such limits.
