  1. He's the same size as Corrado and Clendening, and only a few pounds less than Dorsett and Richardson.
  2. Kenins - Horvat - Virtanen Rock and roll!
  3. Considering the current roster, yes, Virtanen is going to stand out next camp. Sounds like JB is already anticipating this, so would not at all be surprised to see moves that clear roster spots, especially the way the team is going right now. Seriously -- how can that speed, skill, and physicality NOT be exactly what this team needs, even if just for 10 min/game? He needs a coach to up his development curve; can't be Green so let's put him into Willie's hands.
  4. He got stood up at the blueline one time and went to the ice. That Ruskie musta had kryptonite. He was about the same height but 20lbs lighter. Was funny though, as a few minutes earlier he was in a scrum trying to mix things up, then during play he sees Virtanen coming so he lowers the shoulder to angle into him and... Kosmonaut in orbit!
  5. The thing with Jake, and what his brother laughs about, is that it's when guys get ready to hit him that they go flying. Jake's size is decent but it's the force he delivers from momentum and use of timed leverage that bowls guys over, not brute strength.
  6. The surreal thing about that night was as Jim Robson described -- everyone that was there knew that finally, we had a real genuine superstar on the also-ran Vancouver Canucks. Nobody in the league ever caught Pavel once he got going. Nobody. Funny, Cliff Ronning said the same thing about one of his two shifts that first night where he blew through the D that I thought at the time -- don't think I've ever seen anyone skate that fast, not even Bure after that.
  7. Benning said a year or two when he got him. He knew what he was doing with that third-rounder.
  8. Maybe it's just because they're juniors, but Jake is constantly blowing by guys like that. Perhaps his speed is deceptive coming in, or he kicks another gear and they get flat-footed.
  9. Benning said the same thing in his interview today -- very happy the way Bo's been progressing, especially in the last few games. Their line gets hemmed in at times which probably accounts for the poor fancy stats, but it's great watching him get better and more confident game-by-game.
  10. He's a smart player and understands the game very well. In particular, he's willing to do what it takes to win, including going to the net and take a beating if it means a chance to get a goal. Yes he's lost a step but unfortunately the team doesn't have many guys with his game. 6-8 months ago I would have said he should be moved, but watching the team this season I think we'd be better-served moving a couple others first until we get a replacement that brings what he does.
  11. While very true up to a few games ago, he's changed quite a bit in the last two games especially. Whereas before he was kindof lingering around the blueline trying to be responsible and gingerly tapping his checks along the boards, he is now using more aggression and speed to get in on the puck and when going to the net. He had two great chances taking passes in front of the net last night, and was one of if not the best forward on the team, imo. The kid IS going to put up points in this league. And yes, he's also looking faster -- perhaps because he is accelerating in anticipation of a play and is getting past guys with his momentum?
  12. Ehlers with over double the icetime of Jake, and both he and Fabbri are on the ice over half of every game?
  13. You didn't listen to what I said after you said he hasn't "wrapped his head around how to backcheck": Look at what he did right BEFORE that hit -- he caught up to a guy and stripped him of the puck, backchecking. Had an excellent shift.
  14. Check the shift where he got the penalty, about 5-7 seconds before the hit.
  15. McCann was talking at the draft like he was planning to make the team next year. He probably has further to go than Jake, but Jake also offers a dimension the team needs and is more physically ready. With no AHL eligibility next season, it'll be another Bo situation -- determining which is best for his development, NHL or junior. Right now probably junior, but that's 9 months away still.
  16. They have some good ones, but the top ones are on the very smallish side (Petan, De Leo, Ehlers). We saw what having a mobile and puck-moving D does for a team... and I'm sure JimB has, too. Expecting that to be at or near the top of his priorities right now.
  17. Jake certainly plays bigger than his specs read. Kesler was drafted a year older at 6'1 and 195, and is listed now at 6'2 and 208, which is the same weight and an inch taller as barely-18 Jake is now. He'll likely gain another 10-15 lbs in the next couple years and if he grows another inch or two, more than that. if he maintains the same footspeed... look out.
  18. There's really no debating this. Virtanen already has better puck-handling skills, shot, and offensive instinct at the same age. Kesler was drafted as a defensive specialist with "offensive potential". He has but once scored more than 26 goals in a season and but once had more than 33 assists. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7xTbDHT5Yg
  19. Virtanen has far more offensive skill and upside than Kesler.
  20. Yes, playing at a high level like this with his peers is great for him. He'll be motivated now to work on his game and look forward to being a veteran and leader at the next one. Great skills coupled with a great attitude, Jake's going to be fine. Nobody made a .gif of Jake launching the kosmonaut into orbit from the first period yet?
