[Draft] VAN selects Jake Virtanen 6th Overall
Gaudette Celly replied to Strombone1's topic in Canucks Talk
Yeah, this is what I'd like to ask the people who wanted to make such a deal -- of course none have played a single game in the NHL, but would you still? And remember -- Florida apparently said it wasn't enough! -

lol yeah, get us back to zero! Oh, and remember to add Tanev or Kassian in there too But seriously, a playmaking center is certainly in their plans, but for now we're getting a decent stable of two-way 2/3Cs. Remember that Morrison was never a "true" 1C as usually defined. -

The kid is 6'1 and 205... at 17! And it's not just that he haphazardly throws weight around, but he does so with actual strength and balance. It's not just about size either. Raffi Torres is the same size at 6' and 210, and is one of the hardest hitters out there. -
[Draft] VAN selects Jake Virtanen 6th Overall

Have to admit -- that physicality, balance, speed, and shot are quite remarkable at his age. Kid can score. Appears we just doubled the number of high-octane finishers in the prospect pool... to two. -
[Rumor] VAN Trade in Place for 1st Overall?
Gaudette Celly replied to Strombone1's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Tallon's been like the kid in the sandbox with the newest shiny Tonka. "You wanna play with it? Gimma a bajillion dollars." "No me -- I'll give you a gazillion!" "No wait, I'll give you anything!" -
[Rumor] VAN Trade in Place for 1st Overall?
Gaudette Celly replied to Strombone1's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Still makes no sense -- Tallon was very clear that he wanted players, not picks or prospects. ...unless THIS, which makes more sense. See what sucker with stars in his eyes goes gaga over having #1 and sells the farm to get it. -
[Rumor] VAN Trade in Place for 1st Overall?
Gaudette Celly replied to Strombone1's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Apparently not, because there is a subculture of CDC idolaters here that wants the golden calf #1 pick at any cost. Evidence? No matter what rumour has come up, they have yet to say "too much". When Shinkaruk+Kassian+6th was put forth a couple days ago and they still were onboard, that pretty much confirmed there is no price too high. -
[Rumor] VAN Trade in Place for 1st Overall?

S'okay, because McDonough has Bowman in high gear working on getting the #1, too. Nice to see other GMs putting in free spadework for Benning, lol. -
[Rumor] VAN Trade in Place for 1st Overall?

Good to hear. That is, unless Benning has some critical issue(s) with Hunter that he wants to move him. -
Actually, sounds more and more like a deal for Kesler gets done. It's the 11th hour and teams are coming back in. Wasn't likely Benning would make the move before today or tonight, and probably won't until tomorrow if any offers of significance start showing up now, especially if two or more teams are really keen. May go down to the wire to see who blinks... or ponies up. I'm just relieved the silly talk of trading Horvat, Shinkaruk, and Kassian has finally died down

I gather this is what he is basing the mock's pick at 24th on? http://www.puckrant.com/fire_and_ice/Its_Official_the_17th_Kesler_Blog_is_up/3625 Nick Kerdiles Shea Theodore 24th overall

Interesting the near-equivalency of #1 and #2, then almost a full category drop to #3. A really big drop from #5 to #6, and from there a plateau to #14 before continuing down. Looks fairly indiciative of the projections this year -- a top-5 then group of 10 or so that could be interchangeable.

Haha, no doubt. If they were in charge of the Canucks, in a couple years we would have McDavid centering Higgins and Welsh on the top line, on a team that wouldn't beat anyone in the AHL. The draw of magic beans are simply irresistible, like moths to a flame. When the #1 overall pick is their defacto Stanley Cup, no player, pick, or prospect is untouchable in the pursuit of their idol.

Are you even listening? Have you listened at all to what Tallon and the Panthers have said they want? Apparently not, so how about we put Rogers Arena into the mix -- think that'll get us Reinhart? How can it be true when it is baseless and nonsensical? It is NOT what Florida has publicly announced it is wanting. So what then -- Florida says they will shop the pick for proven players, then turn around and take picks and prospects instead? If so, either they were outright lying, or whoever offers up those picks and prospects massively overpaid to where Tallon couldn't say no. So you don't believe what the teams says publicly, but you believe some writer who pulls things out of thin air? Hey, I heard a rumour -- Benning is offering Horvat, Kassian, and #6 overall for Sharp and Handzus... whaddya think? This isn't rocket science. If you say you don't want a Honda but want to buy a Ford, should your friends believe it when some hack says you're dealing on a Honda, with no evidence whatsoever?

"stop thinking about the third overall pick, the odds that could happen is less than us getting a first overall.... Jesus how easy are fans in vancouver to be manipulate by the media? Suddenly everyone is talking about getting the third overall out of no where." LOL, how's your head feeling? It's really quite the spectacle going on here.

THANK-YOU for others saying this. DeNiro and the others who are all over sending Shinkaruk and other prospects and picks to get the #1 just don't get it -- that is NOT what Florida wants! It's rather embarrassing watching people take FAKE RUMOURS planted by bored writers and run with them. It's beyond me why this has to be explained when it's so obvious, and even further when they don't seem to understand and persist. Please Friday, hurry up and get us out of this face-palming misery, lol. They'd love to have Reinhart and Ekblad too, but that is NOT what they need. Again, they have very clearly stated why the pick is up for trade -- to get PROVEN NHL players. Before you project a strawman upon people, at least try to understand their position. That is, unless you enjoy so openly embarrassing yourself. A philosophy professor would have a field day here -- could bring his class in on a field trip and have them identify and count all the logical fallacies. "Use both sides of paper if necessary."

IMO, the Canucks do not "need" Reinhart to the point of sacrificing their other prospects. Of more importance is acquiring either established young players or highly-touted prospects from moving Kesler, especially the #10 pick from Anaheim. The likelihood of a Draisaitl or Dal Colle dropping out of the top-5 is not at all unfeasible. Take a step back and picture Kassian, Shinkaruk, Dal Colle, and Virtanen on the wings, and tell me that is not preferable to going "all in" just to get the top pick. I believe it is the type of game Benning and Linden envision this team playing -- fast, aggressive, relentless forechecking, hitting, and scoring.
