(Trade) Lucic + Conditional 3rd to Calgary for Neal
Gaudette Celly replied to Pears's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Well, was just trying to pump their tires a bit, but not much to work with. Coulda said, "lost Rattie", too... -
Assuming he fully recovers from surgery, the injuries are in a way a blessing for him. He's been nearly forgotten if not written off by many, in the category of "found money". He'll come in with nearly no pressure, especially with the starting six already projected. If there are no injuries, he likely doesn't earn a top-6 out of camp, but that's fine, he'll get here soon enough. Mobile, high IQ, calm defender, good outlet passes, great wrist shot, decent size, can run the point, no-look passes to open teammates... going to be a great addition.

I enjoy looking at the changes myself, with the other teams loading up with popguns. -

Really? Calgary and Edmonton swap cap anchors. Calgary and Edmonton switch crappy goaltenders. Edmonton signs Granlund, Archibald, Peluso. Calgary loses Hathaway, signs Davidson. Calgary yet to sign RFAs because they need to dump salary. Give me some boots to fill. Meanwhile in the rest of the Pacific: Arizona acquires Kessel for Galchenyuk. Arizona loses Kempe, Panik, Picard, signs Miele, Ness, Bennett. San Jose loses entire 2nd line, signs Prout. Vegas gives away Miller and Haula, still over cap. Vegas signs Nosek, Pirri, and Megna. Anaheim signs MDZ and Wideman. Los Angeles signs Ryan and Frk. -

I remember watching Capricorn One back in the 70s when I was too young to understand. Watched it again recently, and yeah, of course. If it's not that it's so obvious, they even tell and show us. -

Yes, this is why I've suggested that the return for Eriksson will likely be better than most expect. The whipping boy of any fanbase is always going to be perceived as having far below market value. If LE were a UFA, what's he worth? The current depressed UFA market notwithstanding, someone would probably sign him for 2-4 years at $2-3mil per, especially a contender needing a shutdown/PK guy, which is his actual cost in $ now. -
[Report] Eriksson “NOT” likely to be moved on

Yes, them swapping for each other means two of the teams that could have taken on their caps are still available. Nice double-knockout, Albertans! -

(Trade) Lucic + Conditional 3rd to Calgary for Neal

That would seem to be right, I just don't think I've seen a contract year stated with both at the same time. -

Yeah not sure why it shows both, as it can only really be one or the other, afaik. Anything less than an NMC is an NTC of some sort. If it is an NTC, then according to mll (I think) it applies to the upcoming season, which would mean he won't take a spot. -

Bennett still needs to be re-signed, however. Flames saved $500K but more salary needs to move. -

I didn't see much of him last year except against the Canucks, but reports from those who did have indicated that his hits were largely inconsequential or after-the-fact, non-impactful to the play. He cannot "get in on the forecheck" like JB always cites wanting his team to play, not to mention with his minutes down to barely over 13. MDZ was pretty much our team leader in hits, granted Lucic's SHOULD be more effective considering the weight differential. Just happy we don't have to speculate or worry about it any longer. -

Thought I recalled Lucic's NMC being for the duration of his contract, but CapFriendly is showing a modified NTC in the last two years: If accurate, perhaps he does not require a protection spot in the ED? -

Have to consider though, how often do we see Lucic with an open-ice hit or ones like Gudbranson's where a teammate has to respond. And how "open game" was our team really last year, where every team was running our players all game? Yes there were a few hits that we wanted to see responses to, but they weren't by the likes of Lucic or Reaves, and thus could/should have been responded to by any number of players with grit like we have now. If any team is more-likely to take it to others physically it is ours now, but as a team effort not a single behemoth out there trying to bully or rough it up, and in the bigger picture it's more a speed-and-skill game now anyway. Certainly in the regular season, and while more physical in the playoffs everything ramps up including the speed, so if you don't keep up you can't match up. -

I don't buy this "one guy nuclear deterrent" thing, especially as shown with Gudbranson, especially since there are so few in the league now anyway. If some punk takes a cheap shot, he doesn't answer to the biggest brute on the other team, it's a player of similar stature that takes him on, otherwise yes, you get the Matheson running away thing. If Brad Marchand takes a run at Johnny, is he going to have to answer to Milan Lucic? Lucic plays 13 minutes per game. Instead, if you have players (who can PLAY effectively and regularly) with grit and pushback out there on every line and/or pairing, there will ALWAYS be someone there to answer to should the other team do something cheap or stupid. And you answer right NOW, not the next period or next game. -

They were comforted somewhat by having to pay Brouwer's lower bailout while Edmonton still had Lucic. Now they're paying for both. -

Full NMC retained. Considering the cap situation they're in, that trade alone should be a fireable offense. They simply MUST have some other trades on the table ready to happen, whether dumping Brodie or Frolik or otherwise.
