  1. Apparently it's the last day to accept qualifying offers? Would think he'd accept; not sure what leverage he'd have to get much if any more than last year.
  2. Someone's a member of the Tony Gallagher fan club. For sure, let's move out some 1st round picks for cap space, too.
  3. Meh, trade 'em both for Lucic, cuz he's better, wants to be here, and has a cup. A CUP!
  4. Melnyk could cut his roster down to 6 players and pay them $10.04mil each to just reach the cap floor, but NHL rosters are typically 23 players.
  5. Looks like EP has been hitting the weights -- neck thickened right up.
  6. The problem is waivers. Bring in a PoolParty or Honka, they have to stay on the roster. We already have Goldobin as an iffy in-and-out player as it is. Same goes for any time someone goes on waivers and the Pokemon crew all want to grab him. "Try-outs" are for the pre-season, not when you're trying to win games.
  7. Eriksson is a $3mil player, the cap hit for Ottawa is effectively irrelevant. In their case, his value needs to be based on that, and versus other comparable players to determine what the return should be.
  8. So can Virtanen, Ferland, Roussel, Miller, Motte, Pearson, Beagle, Leivo, etc. Difference being, they all do much more than that as well, and for nowhere near the same cost.
  9. Key factor most miss -- Eriksson can still play. The issue is that he's overpaid.
  10. It was someone in the media, I think, who said that Benning hears and cares about fans' opinions but they don't change his mind nor his plan.
  11. This just underlines the key statistical indicator between a playoff and non-playoff team -- goal differential. And further, it seems that the biggest improvements have come not so much from increasing scoring but doing better at preventing goals. Last year, no team with negative differential made the playoffs, and only one with positive did not (Montreal). We were net -29 last year, which means if we score 15 more and allow 15 less, we are right in there. Considering the additions of Miller, Pearson, and Ferland who alone should make up that scoring difference, we have the young players a year older and adding better offense on the back end with Hughes and Myers. Could the anemic PP alone score another 5-10 goals? Then there's the subtraction of the likes of Pouliot and MDZ from the back end, and a healthy(er) season from our primary shutdown Cs Sutter and Beagle should certainly be able to prevent 15 more? I certainly wouldn't be betting against this team.
  12. Actually they were only 11-14-4 against the Pacific, winning just 1 game out of 8 played against Arizona and Anaheim (4 out of a possible 16 points), yet had a winning record against the vaunted Central. If we'd just won 2 more each against those two teams instead of losing, we'd have finished one point behind Colorado. Only had 2 months out of 7 with a losing record, Nov and Feb, largely due to injuries. https://www.hockey-reference.com/leagues/NHL_2019_standings.html With LA, Anaheim, and Edmonton going nowhere, Calgary treading water at best, and San Jose and Vegas with questions we should certainly do better in the Pacific. Having even an "average" level of injuries would also make a significant difference overall.
  13. Maybe one of these years it will finally start... like as soon as Bo, Petey, and Quinn have won multiple cups and are into their 30s.
  14. That's most reassuring. But more accurately, baseless wishful thinking. HARD pass.
  15. Should clarify though, don't think we can do any buyouts now so it would have to wait until next year.
  16. NTC is part of the contract, it doesn't change unless he waives it. Just a random proposal? Benning would jump all over that as they both have only one year left, but doubt Dorion would even consider it.
  17. Well, for one he does not have an M-NTC but a full NTC. It's not modified until next year.
  18. We still have projects, the least of which is Goldobin. Competitive teams cannot afford to be loaded up with them, in particular when they require waivers. Who is Honka going to displace in the roster? Are we just going to "Corrado" him in the pressbox, then send him down to Utica for "conditioning", then continue to monkey around with him and stifle his career and development?
  19. Perhaps the narrative will be, "Dubas only had to give up a first to sign Marner. Wow, a first round pick for Mitch Marner, what a STEAL!"
  20. Just posted very similar in the Eriksson-moving thread, in response to a rumour that the Canucks and Sens are close on a deal. Suggested we move LE and Schaller for Ryan, then we either buy him out now or wait and do it next year (firing him down to Utica if need be), or even the year after as we don't need the cap until 2021. Losing Schaller offsets the increase of Ryan's cap over Loui if we keep him under contract. Right now, buying Ryan out saves us $2.5mil in capspace over keeping Loui, plus we gain back $1.9mil from Schaller leaving. Buying out Loui is $5.5mil for the first 3 years so essentially pointless. However, he's a player that Ottawa could actually use in their lineup, and would be cheaper for them to buy out than Ryan if they so chose because most of his contract has already been paid out. If we keep Ryan for now, including Schaller helps even out the cap hit. Better yet would be to move Baertschi, then we could and should even get something like a pick in return for the increased value. It's not perfect, but does certainly help imo.
  21. It's been the most logical fit all along, but would just have to see what the return is. At this point, even taking back Ryan wouldn't be atrocious, as he's more easily bought out than Eriksson if we have to go that way. In fact, maybe that IS an option -- look at the comparison: Eriksson could still play for Ottawa but also costs less to buy out in real $ since more has been paid already. Not really saving much, and they could use him so they probably would. He also carries $2mil higher cap hit the first 3 years but Ottawa can more easily absorb it than we can. If we buy out Ryan, we gain $2.5mil cap space per year for the next three. It's not a total win, and means we have $5.5mil of dead cap on the books for 3 years, but hopefully the cap will take a springed jump in that time as well. If we don't buy Ryan out, we are taking on an even bigger cap hit, so maybe another player goes along in the deal -- Schaller? BR - $7.25mil LE - $6mil TS - $1.9mil That would effectively even the deal up, then we could revisit a buyout next year, which will only be for 4 years instead of 6. Including Baertschi would reduce even more, plus we could/should get something else back in return, then we can still dump Schaller in Utica and save another mil. What say you?
