[Report] Eriksson “NOT” likely to be moved on
Gaudette Celly replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Exactly what I just posted in another thread. We are now out of the "core rebuild" and floundering stage and looking forward as a playoff team. Next gear engaged, the other rebuilders are in the rear view mirror. We do not need placeholders to fill spots on the roster any longer, nor should we be inclined to take on "projects" to hopefully squeeze something out of them. Look at our roster -- it is now composed of 100% NHL-quality players. No more Megnas, Chaputs, Webers, Skilles, or Shores. Those guys can go to teams like the Oilers and Leafs who've screwed up their caps to where they cannot even ice a full roster. -

Aqualini signed off on the contract, and who knows how much he pushed or advocated it to begin with. Alternatively he could blame coaching or the rest of the team, but we've had 2 head coaches and Green is doing very well so that's not going to be a very valid take. I think we need to ask the Edmonton fans. I'd expect feelings to be about the same for him there as LE here, but for differing reasons. In the end it could just be a saw-off, exchanging two duds. But if that's the case, then why are we taking the losing end of the deal with an extra year and extra $7mil, who arguably contributes less on the ice as well? A project player or middling pick as compensation just isn't enough to warrant that, especially considering where we are in the rebuild. The Oilers will flounder for a few more years yet but our ascendancy starts now, and we are going to need that cap space starting 2 years from now. -

Their latest moves testify they are doubling down. They are prepared to live or die with the skill-alone model. -

Would be a good sign for this organization if we aren't interested. We're at the point in our rebuild where we no longer need or should take on projects. -

We have some pretty nice pieces coming. Woo looks like a gamer, mobile with size, toughness, and a good shot. Rathbone is a fantastic skater with a big shot, and is showing to be physical as well. Add Tryamkin (or not) to that mix and in 2-3 years we may have an outstanding D corps. Hughes - Woo Juolevi - Tryamkin Rathbone - Myers/Stecher/Fantenberg Puck-movers, skaters, shooters, shut-down, and size/toughness in every pairing. Plus the fill-ins and yet unknowns in Rafferty, Teves, Sautner, Brisebois, Utanen, Elliot, Chatfield, etc. A good number may never make it, but it helps explain the lack of dmen taken in this past draft. -

He would require waivers to be sent down, but can pretty much guarantee he won't be claimed. We don't know the situation between him and his teammates, but by all accounts it's more between him and the coach(es). Haven't ever heard anything about him being a problem in the room, from here or any of his previous teams. I don't see it as any different from the situations with Prust, Higgins, and Weber. They were ALL given full opportunity to earn and keep a roster spot. When they failed to do so, then the team, with their agents' help, sought to find a way to get them a new home in the NHL. When that failed, they really had no choice but to put them on waivers and send them to Utica. This is not without precedent, Jimbo's shown he WILL do it. The Canucks will always seek to ice the best team they can every night, the most-competitive roster that gives them the best chance to win. If that includes Eriksson, he'll be there. As per above, if he's some sort of active distraction or problem then that's a different story, but there's absolutely no indication of that. Maybe he and the coach despise each other and he will never play for Green again, we just don't know. His agent says it has "gone past" the idea of a trade request. Now with the rumours of threatening Utica and such, it may be that there are sufficient issues that it's a near expectation, or simply that they've advised him that based on his play the past 3 years and the projected roster this year that there may not be a spot available for him on the Canucks. -

It's not about him playing to live up to his contract, it's him playing to deserve a place on the roster. If guys like Motte and Leivo continue to out-hustle him and other more skilled players out-produce him, then he's going to be on the outside. He has the ability to play in the NHL, but not on the Canucks if he's not one of the top-12 forwards. Ottawa has always seemed like the most logical fit, and maybe it will be once the signing bonus is paid. Who knows what Dorion is thinking or what he wants in return to make a deal though. Would expect by now they've hashed it out enough to know if something's workable, and if so we should find out shortly. Would not be surprised if we retained some, even $2mil, but have to keep in mind the $3mil we already have on the books with Lou. Then again if the cap gets a nice boost in a year or two it won't really matter. -

That's why the "if". We're talking about professional athletes, the vast majority of which are mature competitors that want to play and win. He must clearly see where he stands now, so he and his agent need to get busy in helping him find a new home. There's a place for him in this league, but it has to be at the right price for the team as well. I do not see them giving a substantial asset away just to move him as it's not absolutely necessary, but Utica is a very real option. He'll be given a chance to make the team at camp, and if he does maybe he starts here, but if he falters (yet again) he'll be out of the lineup and may not get back in. -

IF he's a "bad influence" then he sits. Or is told to pack his bags and sit at home. -

But... we might get Shea Weber (i.e. 2nd round pick). IF we get anything extra at all, that is. Seriously, the same ones advocating getting him are going to be the first ones shouting from the rooftops "Get rid of this fat overpaid slug! #benningyouIDIOT" Oh wait, there's James Neal. I'm sure he could turn it around here, too. Like Lucic, it's only another extra year... -

All depends on what they negotiate. Reportedly JT Miller's pending protection did not come along with his contract in the trade. As we saw with the Edler negotiation, Lucic retaining any protection for expansion is NOT happening. -

Eriksson helps Edmonton's terrible PK. Eriksson can still play throughout the lineup in different roles. Eriksson helps Edmonton's cap trouble, ending a year earlier. Eriksson helps Edmonton's financials, costing less per year in real salary. Lucic... is from Vancouver and can punch faces. Yes, those 2 fights per year he has. At home. P.S. Yanni Gourde had 4. -

Cool, then it also means we are now where the Leafs were 3 years ago... all done their rebuild, and cup contenders! -

Lucic will do better here cuz it's his home. Lucic will do better because of years-past troubles being over. We might get a pick back. We might get a failed prospect back. We might be able to do something with the failed prospect, the one no-one else wants, you know, like we've done with Goldobin. It's only one extra year. It's only another $7 million. Yeah he's ineffective, but he's so big 'n tuff. The excuses and rationale are literally tissue-paper thin and fanciful wishful thinking. -

Gaudette Celly replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Okay, I'm just not getting it here. We want to trade what most are calling a "useless cap-eating garbage player" for another one arguably less useful and with the same salary... plus an extra year? In the hopes we might get a pick or failed prospect as a "project" when nobody else seems to want him either? This rage against Eriksson and desperate panic to be rid of him is causing a serious loss of rationality. -

The one potential downside that just occurred to me... if they're trying to get him to be more flexible with his NTC, what if he then says "Okay fine, I'll go to Edmonton"? Really hope he's either gone before the 17th (the date of Lucic's bonus) or at least a while after.
