So coach T called out the team "soft", who will be our team's enforcer then?
kloubek replied to tan's topic in Canucks Talk
Lucic should be available for 1m next season. Slow, but wouldn't look too bad on the 4th line imo. -
If I was GM, I wouldn't classify Hughes as untouchable. Petey either, for that matter. A GM would be unwise to shut it down before it starts, as it COULD produce one hell of a haul. And with that said, it would have to be an enormous haul to make sense for the Canucks to trade Hughes. And if there was any team that was willing to give up such a haul, it seems to me the Devils would pay the extra to get the brothers together. My offer: Hughes, Rathbone + 2nd to Devils for Siegenthaler, Mercer, Nemec, and a 1st. Then we sign Severson in the offseason. Siegenthaler Severson OEL Myers Dermott Bear I also think if we could move Myers for even future considerations, then we-sign Schenn, I believe we would be better off saving the 5m cap as Schenn brings virtually the same qualities at 20% of the price. Siegenthaler Severson OEL Bear Dermott Schenn +5m cap

...or as a career or motivational coach. They guy could have been a star in the NHL if his neck-up was as capable as neck-down.

Can't even cut it in the Swiss league. That's bloody sad. All the physical tools, but his personality strikes again. What comes after you can't cut it in a European league? Is it straight to beer league, or....?

Is Elias Pettersson Happy In Vancouver? | 32 Thoughts (Sportsnet)
kloubek replied to Canuck You's topic in Canucks Talk
Great interview. He seemed pretty confident in his answer that he likes Vancouver, but he's also been quoted before saying that he "wants to win". So I think he's willing to see the retool through, though if it is unsuccessful I imagine he will look to move on. He seemed slightly guarded in the questions about JT and thought heavily about the responses he gave. To me, that shows either he is being honest and wanted to be careful not to say anything that could cause a problem, OR that he isn't being honest, and actually has an issue with JT. My guess is that it's somewhere in between. -
[Poll] With Horvat gone, who should be named the Canucks next captain?
kloubek replied to Roberts's topic in Canucks Talk
Even if true, Miller is a giveaway machine. Despite being 2nd on the team in offensive zone starts, he leads the team with 33 giveaways. Now, if he was able to recover those giveaways as well as, say, Petey, then it wouldn't be as big of a deal. But he doesn't, and when the play goes the other way, you can rest assured Miller is coasting and watching the repercussions instead of trying to stop them. Miller is a very good player, but he hasn't learned yet when a play is forced or natural. -
[Signing] Islanders re-sign Bo Horvat
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
So, high payment until he is... what... 35 years old? Those last few years might look pretty bad, though I doubt he will be able to live up to that contract right from the start. On one hand, it's a shame his devotion to his team wasn't worth taking a bit less. On the other, as others have said, we likely dodged a bullet. It's also interesting to note that the offer of 7.5 x 7 years tells me that the idea really IS to retool the team and not go full rebuild. Between the offer to Bo and Kuz signing, they intend on keeping higher profile (and collectively expensive) guys on the roster. Good for Bo, though. I mean, this was his big-money contract timeframe and he showed fantastic this season. It isn't like he didn't earn the opportunity. -
[Poll] With Horvat gone, who should be named the Canucks next captain?
kloubek replied to Roberts's topic in Canucks Talk
He has had more than a couple lazy games. The guy often makes low percentage plays. This stifles the momentum at best, and ends up with it in our own net at worst. Then there's the hothead attitude we can see, and who knows what else when it comes to potential rifts with teammates. Don't get me wrong - Miller when he is on can make a huge difference in a game. But even when he IS on, it's still common to see rather bonehead mistakes from the guy. -
I'm not sold on the guy, but his historical production is very close to 2nd line territory, despite some relegating him to the 3rd line already. All reports talk about his speed, which should be exciting to watch if nothing else. I think the idea is that with his still-raw(ish) skill that hasn't quite materialized fully that perhaps our training team and coaches can help him advance his abilities. This helps him be a better producer, but presumably also increases his worth as an asset.

[Proposal] Demko to BUF, OEL to FLA
kloubek replied to Qwags's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
This is interesting, if nothing else. I think Buffalo gives up too much. Or, at least, that's how they'd likely feel. Demko just doesn't have the same value right now as he did when he had put up back to back .915 save %. Their 1st will likely be a top 15 pick, and Krebs still has untapped potential, even if he isn't showing as well as he did in his first year in Buffalo. All for a goalie who was expected to be a #1, but simply didn't look like that same goalie this season. As for your second trade, I like the idea generally speaking - especially in relation to the first trade. We get a vet goalie to help Luukkonen grow, and might be able to regain some value if Bobs can improve. (With that said, he's not getting any younger so that might be a tough ask). If all else fails, at least we have a serviceable backup and his contract is one year less than that of OEL's. A couple of things: 1) Can Bobrovsky even be traded? Isn't he injured? 2) The already-mentioned NTCs. 3) We would need to find another defenseman to take OEL's place. Slight the guy for not being nearly as good as his salary would suggest, but he's still an ok defenseman, generally speaking. 4) Should Luukkonen not develop, or Bob not return to a form that could be tradable (both entirely possible, if not likely) we would also need to find ourselves a new #1. In any event, I really like the consideration put into this proposal. Nice work. -
[Signing] Canucks re-sign Andrei Kuzmenko
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Probably the best scenario I can think of for both parties. Vancouver gets a solid player for a reasonable price for a couple of years, and Kuz proves he is not just a flash in the pan and can command the big bucks in a couple of years. -
Who would replace Tyler Myers if he is traded/bought out?
kloubek replied to Hectic's topic in Canucks Talk
It's clear that we're not going to be able to keep all our higher end players. I feel (and have for 2-3 years) that if we ship out a big piece, the main piece coming back MUST be the proper kind of RD this team has been lacking for several years. Especially this season, where I feel that if our team was in sync that we would have plenty of scoring, so that only exasperates the need on D specifically. Frankly, while I think we can largely all agree that Myers isn't worth his contract, he's shown periods of time where he was at least a GOOD defenseman - albeit overpaid. But this season, he's been very questionable. His playmaking is slow and telegraphed. He really doesn't hit like someone his size should. He seems to have lost almost all offensive ability other than pounding the pucks in (close) to the net, and it looks almost as if his size is growing to be a detriment to his ability to harness and move the puck. As a result, he is forced to make a play quicker than he can handle - and therefore more poor lackluster plays than usual. Really, I feel the only thing we would miss is his size but if we managed to retain Schenn or get someone back who can pick up the slack, there really isn't a ton of other elements we cannot find elsewhere. (And much cheaper) Perhaps a guy who can put up more than 1 goal a season wouldn't hurt either. -
There are plenty of players better than Tryamkin. Just as there are plenty of players better then Schenn. Yet, having at least 1 guy on the team who is capable of laying out bone crushing hits is a must for a playoff team, imo. And Try simply dominated in that department.

[Report] Tanner Pearson to miss the remainder of 2022-23 season
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
When Pearson played his game, he was actually quite effective. His ability is missed in this lineup. But he had a REALLY rough season to start, followed by all this injury crap. I wish him the best. -
Instead of Mexican we'd have an indigenous Canadian design something with the V. It'd have to be thoroughly modern in design, which may be challenging using genuine native elements but as a former designer, I believe it entirely possible. I know most have grown to dislike the Orca, but I liked the intent and general application of native design.

Who among the higher priced Canuck Forwards should the Team trade?
kloubek replied to *Buzzsaw*'s topic in Canucks Talk
Cute graphic, OP. While everyone is talking about who should go and who should stay, all I'm thinking about is the fact the real reason this team hasn't found success isn't exactly known. I mean, we could say our lineup simply isn't good enough, but why not? On paper, this is a good team - even with a D that needs work. We certainly pay them enough. The names are there. Is it poor leadership? Coaching? Effort or character? Yes, previous management pushed us into cap hell, but we aren't the only team dealing with that. We can shuffle the the players (again) like a deck of cards, but is it possible we'd be destined to the same result? There is something inherently WRONG with this team. Negativity, whatever. The media doesn't help, but they never have. But something has to be fixed other than the personnel out on the ice. -
[PGT] Colorado Avalanche at Vancouver Canucks | Jan. 05, 2023
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Honestly, the first half of last night's game looked like every other game we've lost. A lot of chasing the play, relying on the goalie, and most of the players looking out of sync. The second half was the way this team must play to be successful. Of course they outscored the Avs in the 2nd half, but even if they didn't, there was a decidedly different appearance to the team, and by the time the 3rd rolled around it was pretty clear we were likely to win the game if we could keep it going. (Which the boys did). -
[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
kloubek replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I disagree. Although I agree his shooting % isn't likely sustainable, I think that what he has shown will garner enough interest that there will be teams chomping at the bit to sign him even without a larger sample size. There is really no reason he will need another year to "prove his worth". -
[Rumour] Ryan Merkley requests trade from Sharks
kloubek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Naturally - because scoring 6 points in the NHL automatically entitles a player to choose where you would like to play. -
Can they with that looming contract? No GM wants to be tied down at that term and cap hit to a guy who is now gaining a public reputation (warranted or not) for being a d*uche. He likely already had a bit of a rep with those "in the know", and this, combined with a lack of standout play to warrant said contract, and I think he's significantly reduced his value. Can anyone imagine Horvat acting like this? He's playing tough in negotiations, but has been nothing but class.
-
I really like the look as well. Colouring and design is on point. It's just the Johnny Canuck logo that I'm not super keen on. To me, a logo is best not looking like a fun cartoon character as your main logo. Put it back on the shoulders or something, and figure out a way to colour the skate logo appropriately.

The Canucks would be better off moving Elias Pettersson than Bo Horvat
kloubek replied to Ruthervin's topic in Canucks Talk
Well, the first assumption here is that there needs to be a full rebuild. I'm not sure there is an appetite for that in our management group and I'm virtually certain ownership isn't interested. I agree that Petey may not want to stick around through a rebuild. I also agree that our team as a whole isn't very good defensively. Part of that is a substandard defense - which would be well served by getting that top-end defensive player you speak of, but the rest falls on the forwards. Maybe we don't have the right mix of players. Or maybe it's the coaching - though we've been through a couple now with this general lineup and it's gotten worse, not better. So ultimately OP, I think you're on the right track, but it really depends on whether the team will be torn down or not. If not, most of what you said is somewhat moot. Personally, I think they need to dive into the analytics and see which players are costing us games - even if they might be a point producer. My own eye test doesn't seem to jive with stats like Fenwick or Corsi, but visually I feel that Miller, Myers, Pearson are players who tend to give up bonehead goals against, or in the case of Boeser (who I feel is actually not too bad defensively), just doesn't have the jump and tenacity required to be a premier top six forward. There are also a few depth players that haven't looked fully capable, but those kinds of guys are easy to replace.
